What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia causes difficulties in learning to read, write and spell. Short-term memory, mathematics, concentration, personal organisation and sequencing may also be affected. Dyslexia usually arises from a weakness in the processing of language-based information. Biological in origin, it tends to run in families, but environmental factors also contribute. Dyslexia can occur at any level of intellectual ability. It is not the result of poor motivation, emotional disturbance, sensory impairment or lack of opportunities, but it may occur alongside any of these. The effects of dyslexia can be largely overcome by skilled specialist teaching and the use of compensatory strategies. The Dyslexia Institute 2002
What causes dyslexia? Dyslexia is now firmly established as a congenital and developmental condition. Its cause has not been fully confirmed but the effect is to create neurological anomalies in the brain. These anomalies bring about varying degrees of difficulty in learning when using words, and sometimes symbols. For detailed information link to the article 'Dyslexia - 100 years on.'

This is a site on learning disabilities. It consists of information and articles on deficits in reading, language and math.
Dys means deficit , and is used in words like dyslexia (reading deficit), dysphasia (language deficit) and dyscalculia (math ability deficit).
Living with deficits of the kind this site talks about means living with a learning handicap. UN's Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities read:
"States should recognize the principle of equal primary, secondary and tertiary educational opportunities for children, youth and adults with disabilities, in integrated settings. They should ensure that the education of persons with disabilities is an integral part of the educational system."
If we are to fullfill these requirements, that most countries have ratified, we have to change our ways of teaching children with these kinds of disabilities, in order to offer them the same possibilities in regard to education and fullfilling adult lives as non-disabled children have.
Use the links at the top of the page to retrieve information on the different learning disabilities.

Vision, Learning and Dyslexia
A Joint Organizational Policy Statement of the American Academy of Optometry and the American Optometric Association Many children and adults continue to struggle with learning in the classroom and the workplace. Advances in information technology, its expanding necessity, and its accessibility are placing greater demands on people for efficient learning and information processing. Learning is accomplished through complex and interrelated processes, one of which is vision. Determining the relationships between vision and learning involves more than evaluating eye health and visual acuity (clarity of sight). Problems in identifying and treating people with learning-related vision problems arise when such a limited definition of vision is employed. This policy statement addresses these issues, which are important to individuals who have learning-related vision problems (such as dyslexia), their families, their teachers, the educational system and society. Policy Statement People at risk for learning-related vision problems should receive a comprehensive optometric evaluation. This evaluation should be conducted as part of a multidisciplinary approach in which all appropriate areas of function are evaluated and managed.

Glossary of Terms: Vision, Visual Health AMBLYOPIA ("lazy eye") a visual defect that affects approximately 2 or 3 out of every 100 children in the United States. Amblyopia involves lowered visual acuity (clarity) and/or poor muscle control in one eye. The result is often a loss of stereoscopic vision (3D) and depth perception. Vision therapy can improve this condition. Early detection is extremely important. For many years, it was thought that amblyopia (lazy eye) was only amenable to treatment during the " critical period ". This is the period up to age seven or eight years. Current research has conclusively demonstrated that effective treatment can take place at any age. The length of the treatment period increases dramatically the longer the condition has existed prior to treatment. People often confuse amblyopia (lazy eye) with strabismus (crossed eyes, eye that wander, turn or deviate). These are two different but sometimes interrelated visual problems. See more in-depth definitions written by an eye doctor at

Introduction to RfS
What is Dyslexia? Who Has It? What Causes It? ... Bibliography
Reading from Scratch, (RfS/EL)
a program of science-based teaching techniques, now makes possible grade level or higher reading.
Because brain scans have finally pin-pointed the CAUSE of dyslexia, and if you remove the cause, the reading problem can be fixed.
A good reader uses the left side of his brain when he reads.
A dyslectic reader uses the right by mistake.
Switch the reader over to the left where the programming is built in for reading and spelling. RfS/EL was designed to make that switch.
The previously dyslectic student can finally do academic work that reflects his ability instead of his reading problem.
There are two versions of the program, a
