Dyslexia is a term that has been loosely applied to reading disabilities. Specific definitions for dyslexia vary with disciplines. Those in medicine define dyslexia as a condition resulting from neurological, maturational, and genetic causes, while those in psychology relate dyslexia on the basis of the specific reading problems evidenced and give no reference to causation. All disciplines would probably agree that dyslexia is evidenced by persons of otherwise normal intellectual capacity who have not learned to read despite exposure to adequate instruction.

    1. Introduction.
People with dyslexia can have enormous difficulties in making sense of reading, writing and spelling. Nowadays there is much that can be done. Dyslexia is a recognised condition and, if identified early, people can generally be helped to find ways to cope with their problems and acquire the skills we all need to reach our potential. This site aims to raise awareness about dyslexia. It discusses possible causes of the condition. It provides practical advice to enable people to recognise dyslexia and suggests ways to deal with problems before school, at school and later in life. It also includes a comprehensive resource section with details of the many organisations which offer help, as well as lists of further reading and websites.
    A dyslexia friendly site.

    What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a disorder which makes it difficult for individuals of average or above average intelligence to read, write, and spell and sometimes to compute, organize, and comprehend material in their native language. It often runs in families and may be caused by naturally occurring brain differences. Although dyslexia is lifelong, individuals with dyslexia frequently respond successfully to timely and appropriate intervention. Contact San Diego IDA by e-mail: pph@tfb.com

HEALTH Overcoming Dyslexia FORTUNE examines business leaders and artists who have gone beyond the limitations of dyslexia. FORTUNE Sunday, April 28, 2002 By Betsy Morris Consider the following four dead-end kids. One was spanked by his teachers for bad grades and a poor attitude. He dropped out of school at 16. Another failed remedial English and came perilously close to flunking out of college. The third feared he'd never make it through schooland might not have without a tutor. The last finally learned to read in third grade, devouring Marvel comics, whose pictures provided clues to help him untangle the words. These four losers are, respectively, Richard Branson, Charles Schwab, John Chambers, and David Boies. Billionaire Branson developed one of Britain's top brands with Virgin Records and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Schwab virtually created the discount brokerage business. Chambers is CEO of Cisco. Boies is a celebrated trial attorney, best known as the guy who beat Microsoft. In one of the stranger bits of business trivia, they have something in common: They are all dyslexic. So is billionaire Craig McCaw, who pioneered the cellular industry; John Reed, who led Citibank to the top of banking; Donald Winkler, who until recently headed Ford Financial; Gaston Caperton, former governor of West Virginia and now head of the College Board; Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinko's; Diane Swonk, chief economist of Bank One. The list goes on (see table

Teaching Methods Multi-sensory teaching methods Studies from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development have shown that for children with difficulties learning to read, a multi-sensory teaching method is the most effective teaching method. This is especially crucial for a dyslexic child. But what does it mean? More Confidence building The majority of dyslexic children have come to the conclusion that they are stupid! In any school in any week of the year a dyslexic child experiences a huge amount of failure. Why can't he read and spell? He must be dumb, thick, stupid. It's the conclusion that anyone would reach in similar circumstances, and it badly needs changing before any corrective teaching is going to be effective. More What causes it?
