Have you been looking around the Web, and can't find what you want
    concerning special education Then try......

As a special educator I understand the value of information resources concerning special education. With this in mind, I have created the SPECIAL EDges page in hopes that it will bea place that will be useful for educators, parents and anyone else who deals with special needs students. The page is made up of various links to SPED resources that I have found helpful.
I've also included my school (RussellCounty High School) , my peer tutoring group, and an assortment of other things I consider interesting and fun. This Page is new and I am currently learning the ropes of making and maintaining a website, so please have some patience and understanding.(Ever heard that before?).

Children's Reading Disability Attributed To Brain Impairment
From the the National Institutes of Health Children who are poor readers appear to have a disruption in the part of their brain involved in reading phonetically, according to a sophisticated brain imaging study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The study also found that children who read poorly but who do not receive any extra help or training eventually compensate for their disability by using other parts of the brain as backup systems for the impaired brain regions. Although most of these children eventually do learn to read, they never do so with the same fluency as do good readers. This is probably because the "backup" brain systems they use when reading apparently cannot process printed information as easily as can the brain systems primarily
involved in reading.

Friends of Special Education does not endorse any of the groups or agencies listed, nor do we make any representations as to how effective or ineffective they are in providing services. The following list of resources includes federal, state and local agencies mandated to provide services to children with special needs; legal assistance agencies and programs that specialize in special education and/or human rights/discrimination/disability issues; and advocacy and support groups. Some listings and descriptions of services provided were obtained from the Directory of Self-Help and Mutual Aid Groups (8th Ed.), 1996-97 edition of the Human Care of Metropolitan Chicago Services Directory, Directory of State Services for People with Disabilities, and a resource list compiled by the Family Resource Center on Disabilities. For some listings, there may be several addresses and phone numbers if the agency or group has several offices throughout the state. Other listings that may have more than one office may only list one address and phone number for intake and referral to the office closest to you. Access Living

Meeting the Challenges: Two moms who have found their own solutions to special education challenges share helpful advice From Carol Edson: Homeschooling a child with disabilities, special circumstances, unique characteristics, different learning styles, or whatever one wishes to call an unusual challenge, can be done. Many families find that no one ‘recipe’ stays successful, and that midcourse corrections are the order of the day. Finding resources can be exciting, yet frustrating, because what is true today may NOT be true tomorrow, or in a different part of the state! Outside the school district, the Internet provides ma ny chances to compare notes, find families with similar problems, and generally get support. Wellness sites like Healthcentral.com have pages with basic information on many conditions, and ideas for further research. A fine magazine is "Exceptional Parent", which addresses many rare conditions and has discussed homeschooling as one of the answers for many families. If a child is permanently blind, one can make plans based on that. But when a child’s situation never stays the same for any period of time, planning becomes more complex. Along with that comes the evolution inherent in different developmental stages. Adjusting to the constant change can be exhausting. Please contact me directly at
