EARTH DAY IN AOMORI
Tsuruta Festivities Celebrate Preserving the Environment
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day was first held in American in 1970 and was the first time humans recognized their part in preserving the Earth. Earth Day is an international partnership activity in which anyone, anywhere, can express their own determination to protect the environment in their own way, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, beliefs, political affiliations and religion.
Earth Day in Tsuruta:
Earth Day in Tsuruta was held for the first time last year. Information on various environmental problems were displayed. Suggestions on how to protect the environment were also offered. While enjoying games and craft activities, participants learned about the environment. Earth Day in Tsuruta was run by volunteers as are Earth Day activities worldwide.

Trash to treasure:

The next time you have a bag of "peanuts", empty milk carton, film canister or cereal box, look at it through different eyes-can it be stuffing for a sock bean bag? -a house for your favorite bean animal, or a simple musical instrument.
We asked some of our readers how they taught their children to recycle, reduce, and re-use...here are some of the super ideas we received. Easy Help for our "Feathered Friends"
Lend a helping hand to the birds in your area by supplying them with simple nesting materials. All you need to do is fill a mesh bag ( like the kind onions are packaged in ) with dried grass, short lengths of yarn and string, even stuffing from old furniture or feather pillow, or hair from your brush. Hang the bag in a location that the birds can safely access, watch them collect, you may be lucky enough to see their nest in one of your trees!

Hear about the Creepy Crawly animals of the forest (snakes, lizards, spiders) and go on a walk looking for them. Learn about the threatened Gopher Tortoise and use a special scope to look down a burrow. Adult Activities (if you can tear yourself away from the Children's Activities): Booths of local Nature and Environment Organizations - From the Audubon Society to Titusville Recycling, from Canaveral National Seashore to the Sea Rocket Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, from the Sierra Club to Brevard Solid Waste. As many as two dozen organizations provide literature and a chance to chat. Some have beautiful T-shirts.
