Earth Day 2000 Should Stimulate Involvement
Despite the wealth of environmental data and information that exists, access to it is often limited. Access is limited by lack of knowledge of what exists and how to retrieve it, and by the inability of users to understand scientific and other complex information.

    Earth Day History...
Earth Day is a commitment to make life better, not just bigger and faster; to provide real rather rhetorical solutions. It is a day to re-examine the ethic of individual progress at mankind’s expense. It is a day to challenge the corporate and government leaders who promise change, but who shortchange the necessary programs. It is a day for looking beyond tomorrow. April 22 seeks a future worth living.

    Hour Two: Earth Day 1999
We'll start off the hour with a look at the fires that have been burning in parts of Florida this week. The fires, aided by unusually dry weather, have burned over a hundred thousand acres of land - including land in the Florida Everglades. We'll talk about the fires and their effects on the environment - and on efforts to restore Everglades land. Plus... Yesterday (April 22nd) marked the 29th anniversary of Earth Day. First proposed in 1970 by Denis Hayes and Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin as a day for a national teach-in about the environment, Earth Day has grown into an annual worldwide observance. The first Earth Day, organizers say, was observed by some twenty million people in the U.S. In 1990, the number of Earth Day celebrators numbered some 200 million worldwide.
(img courtesy of NASA) But has the fervor of the environmental movement that stood behind the first Earth Day gone cold? On this hour of Science Friday, we'll take a look at the environmental movement - and ask whether or not there's such a thing as "The Environmental Movement" anymore.

began on April 22, 1970 and was instigated by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. Actually, the idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. Six years would pass before the idea that became Earth Day occurred to Senator Nelson while on a conservation speaking tour in the summer of 1969.
At the time, anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, called "teach-ins," had spread to college campuses all across the United States. Suddenly, the idea occurred to Senator Nelson - why not organize a huge grassroots protest over what was happening to our environment?
That was the beginning of the Earth Day movement. After the official celebration of the first official Earth Day , Senator Gaylord Nelson said: "That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day . It organized itself." Here are some songs and poems about the Rain Forest, Recycling and Caring for Our Earth.

    Is Earth Day April 22?
    By John McConnell
Submitted to the NatureNode April, 1999
Earth Day is not April 22. The March Earth Day was supported by United Nations Secretary General U Thant in 1971 and has been featured each year since then in an Earth Day Ceremony at the Peace Bell. It has played an important role in initiatives for peace and the care of Earth. The ringing of the Peace Bell signals the moment Spring begins. This is followed by two minutes of silent prayer or reflection a time for people to join worldwide in heartfelt dedication to think and act as trustees of Earth. The result: mass confusion because people in positions of power ignored the truth and supplanted the authentic Earth Day. While it has partially fulfilled its purpose, the undermining actions of April 22 organizers (see their many web sites) prevented the world from knowing about and participating in the March 20 Earth Day. However, this year the March Earth Day was featured in the Moscow press and celebrated on the Mir Space Station. (Costa Rica, Austria and Iran reported joining in the observance.) The authentic Earth Day in years past led to new attitudes that helped end communism in Russia. Now in its authentic Earth Day initiative, Moscow provides new hope for life on our planet! To clarify the issue and overcome the confusion, major media should provide a calendar that will list dates that have been widely accepted as international holidays. Give their names, purposes and history. It will be noted that Arbor Day was started by J. Sterling Morton in 1872. On his death in1907 his birth day, April 22, became Arbor Day a date still recognized as Arbor Day in many countries.

As part of Co-op or work experience requirements, high school students can explore their career interests and gain experience in teaching, leadership and environmental work, and at the same time develop general workplace skills. Elementary students and teachers benefit by having an energetic, enthusiastic young mentor to provide some input, guidance and assistance in their exploration of environmental topics.

Printer Friendly Version Gregory Koukl If Earth Day is justified by the moral concept of stewardship of the planet, its celebrants might be surprised about what else comes in that world view package. I think there needs to be some clarification about the issue of world views before I even make my comments about Earth Day. I think Earth Day proves the Christian world view, or at least is evidence for it. But I think that most people who practice Earth Day are living in a contradiction. Here is why I say that. A world view is just what one understands the structure of the world to be, the way someone believes the world really is. World views come in packages. They are like puzzles with particular parts of them fitting together. For example, if you believe that there is a God who is the moral standard of the universe, then moral rules seem to make sense because God establishes moral rules and we seek to obey those rules, there is a sense of "oughtness" and accountability such that, if we disobey the moral rules, there is punishment from the One who gave the moral rules. You may disagree whether there is a God and there are such moral rules. The point I'm making to you is there is a package effect to these beliefs. Moral rules seem to fit in with the idea of a Rule Maker. So the Christian world view fits in a certain package. Certain things follow from that world view. If God is God, then we are creatures who are created by Him. We are contingent beings. He is non-contingent. He makes the rules. We follow them. The world is a place that God created which we can discoverwe can make sense of it. These are all things that follow from a Christian world view. You see how that fits together?

Denis Hayes believes that preserving land such as this fern-covered knoll in the Cedar River watershed is a matter of not just law or money, but of moral conviction. DENIS HAYES TEETERS on the edge of a stiff chair inside the second-floor conference room of The Bullitt Foundation, where he serves as president. In fact, he seems to unfold his gangly, 6-foot-2 frame in sections, sometimes leaning so far back that he balances on the chair's hind two legs. His legs are cast stiffly at a 45-degree angle, one ankle atop the other. His wrists are wrapped behind his neck like a man reclining in a hammock. His large, intense eyes are lost in the glare from a skylight. "I have to warn you," he says in professorial tones. "This is not a very good story. It is completely out of context, and I can't tell it without sounding pretty flaky." Yet he plunges ahead, because I've asked if there was some epiphany that led a Camas boy who once aspired to become a doctor to abruptly change course and make an indelible mark in the environmental movement instead. Not only did he organize the inaugural Earth Day in 1970, which thrust environmental concerns into political equations, but he has maintained a place over the next three decades as one of its clearest and most respected voices.

Dive In To Earth Day is an international Earth Day celebration with coral reef and marine conservation activities taking place during the week of April 15-22 with a common theme: to remind the public that over 70% of the planet is covered by water and our marine resources need to be protected. Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 with most Earth Day events taking place on land, which is why the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) launched Dive In in April 2000. CORAL is once again coordinating Dive In To Earth Day, with the help of our sponsors and partner organizations . U.S. senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wis.), recognized a growing environmental concern that had barely been addressed by the legislature . In setting aside April 22 to recognize human impact on the environment, Nelson hoped first and foremost to raise the awareness of politicians. Nelson certainly achieved his goal. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration, causing voter-hungry politicians to take notice. The overwhelming response helped generate a new political focus on the environment . As that focus has become increasingly global, more people than ever are celebrating Earth Day around the world.
