Good Stewards of God's Gift of Energy Worship Resources Call to Worship
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Creator of heaven and earth!
Praise be to Jesus Christ!
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
In Christ all things in heaven and on earth were created.
All things have been created through him and for him.
In Christ the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.
Through Christ God was pleased to reconcile all things,
things on earth and things in heaven, making peace through the blood of the cross. from Colossians 1:15-20 Prayer of Confession Merciful God, in your gracious presence we confess our sin and the sin of this world. Although Christ is among us as our peace, we are a people divided against ourselves as we cling to the values of a broken world. The profit and pleasures we pursue lay waste the land and pollute the seas. The fears and jealousies we harbor set neighbor against neighbor and nation against nation. We abuse your good gifts of imagination and freedom, of intellect and reason, and have turned them into bonds of oppression .Lord, have mercy on us; heal and forgive us. Set us free to serve you in the world as agents of your reconciling love in Jesus Christ. from the Book of Common Worship (PCUSA) The prayer will continue in silence Litany for Creation Leader: Creator God, breathing your own life into our being. You gave us the gift of life. You place us on this earth with it minerals and waters, flowers and fruits, living creatures of grace and beauty. You gave is the care of the earth. Today you call us to care for the earth. Today you call us: "Where are you; what have you done?"

Earth Day History
On April 22, 1970, demonstrators carrying 20 pounds of dead fish and a long-expired octopus paraded in front of a power company in Coral Gables, Florida. The plant, they charged, was releasing water heated to nearly 100 degrees into Biscayne Bay, causing heavy fish kills. That same day, students in Omaha, Nebraska wore gas masks on a seemingly clear day, while students in San Jose, California buried a car. In Centralia, Washington a goat wandered about a lawn wearing a sign reading, "I eat garbage, what do you do for your community?" Why all these strange occurrences? April Fools Day had come and gone weeks before. The answer is simple April 22, 1970 was the first Earth Day. Earth Day was the brainchild of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson who came up with the idea in the wake of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. If so many students across the country could mobilize against the Vietnam War, he thought, why couldn't they organize a national teach-in about the environment. He then hired a Harvard student named Denis Hayes to be the national coordinator, and history was in the making. More than 20 million people took part in the first Earth Day

    WORLD SUMMIT ON
    SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
    Day 9, Monday 2nd September 2002
Suddenly, almost without anyone noticing it coming, and even before Colin Powell has come into town to lead the US delegation, it appears we have agreement. And what a sullen, limp and unimaginative agreement it looks. This from the morning paper ‘Friends of the Earth said the plan was disappointing because it set no rules for corporate responsibility, was subordinate to trade agendas, was dominated by industrialised countries, set no targets for renewable energy, did not deal adequately with farm subsidies and watered down goals for protecting biodiversity’. The lack of targets on renewable energy looks particularly serious, not to say incredible, given that global warming is our number one, simply-must-address concern. Rumour has it that the G77 group of poor countries traded off targets on renewable energy against firm commitments on reductions in the number of people without access to potable water and sanitation. WWF are referring to the section on energy as the Bush-Cheney agreement, while Greenpeace says, ‘it is worse than we could have imagined’. True, all the observations I am quoting here are from difficult-to-satisfy NGOs. However, I scour the papers in vain for any enthusiastic comment whatsoever from any quarter. So, no grand gestures, no compelling drama, no heroic stands for justice in the face of raw power. All the EU and G77 talk of solidarity and defiance, of preferring no agreement to one that lacks teeth appears to have been surprisingly empty posturing. The Summit, it seems, is ending not with a bang but with a whimper. One of the GEN team, Marti from Auroville, went into the plenary session of Heads of State this morning, immediately felt nauseous and just about reached the door before vomiting. She spoke for all of us.

In classrooms, museums, planetaria, and at NASA centers we plan to have a sensational time sharing stories, images, and activities related to the Sun-Earth connections and the views of the Sun from Earth. When will it happen?
We will celebrate on March 20 in our classrooms, museums, malls, planetaria, and auditoriums around the world.

R EASON * May 2000 Earth Day, Then and Now
The planet's future has never looked better. Here's why. By Ronald Bailey Thirty Years ago, 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Fifth Avenue in New York City was closed to automobiles as 100,000 people joined in concerts, lectures, and street theater. More than 2,000 colleges and universities across America paused their anti-war protests to rally instead against pollution and population growth. Even Congress recessed, acknowledging that the environment was now on a political par with motherhood. Since that first Earth Day, the celebrations have only gotten bigger, if somewhat less dramatic: The organizers of Earth Day 2000, to be held April 22, expect 500 million people around the globe to participate in celebrations, workshops, and demonstrations. This year's theme is "clean energy" and the master of ceremonies for the big celebration on the Washington Mall is none other than Leonardo Di Caprio. The first Earth Day was the brainchild of Gaylord Nelson, the Democratic senator from Wisconsin. The moment was obviously ripe. Nelson had proposed a national "teach-in" on the environment in September 1969 and only eight months later, everything was in place for the single largest national demonstration in American history. Dramatic events such as the Cuyahoga River bursting into flame in 1969, the blowout of an oil well off Santa Barbara, and the "death" of Lake Erie due to pollution all fed Americans' concerns. The sorry state of America's environment hit home for me when, as a 16-year-old high school student from the mountains of Virginia, I visited George Washington's home, Mt. Vernon, on a marching band trip. Bobbing in the nearby Potomac was a sign warning visitors not to come in contact with the water.

Spring Cleaning the Earth: National Service Celebrates Earth Day
(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Thousands of national service volunteers are taking part in the global celebration of Earth Day by cleaning rivers, monitoring groundwater, restoring hiking trails and teaching children about the environment.
The Earth Day projects involve citizens of all ages - from elementary students in service-learning classes to AmeriCorps members to Senior Corps volunteers. Environmental protection is one of the four main focus areas of national service. Thousands of AmeriCorps members and student and senior volunteers serve on environmental projects year-round. Earth Day is a chance to highlight their efforts and recruit community volunteers for intensive projects. Many national service programs engage young people in hands-on environmental work that encourages an ethic of stewardship.
"On Earth Day and every day, national service volunteers are on the front lines of environmental protection," said Wendy Zenker, Acting CEO of the Corporation for National Service. "I salute these citizens for getting things done to restore the environment for present and future generations."

The Civil Rights marches of the 1950s and 1960s, the teachIns during the VietnamWar, Hands Across America, and earth day brought awareness and change.

Navigation Bar What is Rescue Health Care Day? Every once in a while, a special event affords millions of Americans the opportunity to simultaneously register both their concerns and their demands for change. The Civil Rights marches of the 1950s and 1960s, the Teach-Ins during the Vietnam War, Hands Across America, and Earth Day brought awareness and change. All across the United States, citizens are finding the managed health care system cumbersome, restrictive, often harmful, and occasionally deadly. Many well-trained, ethical, caring clinicians are demoralized under a system that too often prevents them from doing quality work or from referring patients to specialists. Many now believe that because of managed care's basic principles and structure, regulation will not be enough to make it a pro-quality, pro-consumer system and we need to explore alternatives to managed care. Americans never voted to allow corporations interested in protecting executive income and corporate profit to choose clinicians and treatments for them and their families. On Rescue Health Care Day
