Workshop example - The rock cycle Rock Cycle ... Booking form Activity one Erosion and transport Purpose: to show that rocks erode at different rates and that this can explain the formation of uplands and coastal headlands by the more resistant rock types. Activity two Deposition Purpose: to show that ripple structures in sedimentary rocks can be explained by deposition of sediments from moving water. Activity three Compaction and cementation Purpose: to explain that for most sediments to become rocks the grains need to be squeezed together (compacted) and/or glued together (cemented). The extent of the compaction and the strength of the cementation affect the properties of sedimentary rocks.

Creating Dinosaurs from Tracks
Imagine finding a dinosaur track in your backyard! That is exactly what happened to a boy named Pliny Moody in 1802. Find out how scientists then created a life-sized dinosaur from the track! Discovery of a Lost City
Scientists discovered a hydrothermal vent field in the Atlantic containing numerous active and inactive hydrothermal vents, some with 180 feet tall chimneys, the largest ever found. They named it the Lost City. Earth Observatory
The latest from NASA's Earth Observatory. See new satellite imagery and scientific information about our home planet. The focus is on Earth's climate and environmental change. Forecasting Volcanic Eruptions
Can scientists predict volcanic eruptions? Hawaiian Volcano Journal
Follow Jennifer Adleman's travels as a volunteer for the USGS Volcano Web Group in Hawaii. She hiked over volcanoes and lava fields taking pictures and reporting on the current volcanic activity of Kilauea. Along the way Jennifer hiked to other volcanoes and exotic tourist spots of Hawaii seeing birds, animals, and the green sand of Hawaiian beaches. Join the adventure as you read her journal and view her photographs, posted here.

    Air Pressure
    - The force exerted on you and things around you by the weight of tiny particles of air (air molecules) is called air pressure. Although air molecules are invisible, they still have weight and take up space. Air pressure makes it possible to fly in airplanes and keeps our bodies from exploding! Find out how air pressure affects you and why it's important.
