42. "Homily - Sixth Sunday Of Easter" By Laurence Freeman OSB

Should We Teach Meditation in Catechism classes? I am writing this article in answer to the wishes expressed by many people who had asked me to share with them my experiences of teaching Christian meditation to children. It is also written in the hope of helping all those teachers who would like to give a new dimension to the way they teach prayer to children. I would be happy to receive any comments you may have in response to this article. Some years ago, I was teaching catechism to children from the French Lycée in London. I decided to include "meditation" at the end of each lesson. One of the reasons I did this was to help these children to have a better understanding of God. To them, as I perceived it then, God or Jesus was just another subject that they had to study in school to pass exams. God was seen as somebody's idea and definition not truly relevant to their present life, and Jesus was some kind of an unattainable perfect being who lived some 2000 years ago and suffered a very cruel agony and death, but in reality this had not much to do with them today. Children are usually more candid than we are, that is why we can learn so much from them. Very often, I could see a deep unhappiness in their eyes, one which was lying at the core of their being. Not that this unhappiness came from a difficult life with horrible parents or from the great pressure of too much being expected of them, but from the deep feeling that they were of no great value, from their not being able to recognize their inner beauty nor even what was their own true identity. All this caused them pain, and left them with a feeling of imperfection and unfulfillment.

Visit The Prayer Book Society The Prayer Book Society We have heard the Easter Gospel, the Good News of the Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, read and proclaimed in word and song, and we rejoice now with exceeding great joy, as the people of the new covenant, because the Bridegroom has been restored to us who are his Bride! Let us pay heed to the Epistle for Easter Day, Colossians 3:1-11, wherein we are urged to live on earth out of our citizenship of the realms above. We believe, teach and confess that Jesus Christ was crucified, died, was buried, descended into hell and was raised from the dead and exalted into heaven, We believe, teach and confess that Jesus died for us to make Atonement for our sins and to reconcile us to God the Father; we believe that he descended into the realm of the dead, even to the depths of hell, to proclaim the victory of his Cross to all who had died before him; we believe that he was raised for our justification so that we might be truly forgiven and become the adopted children of his Father, enjoying communion with him unto ages of ages. Having affirmed these basic truths we are ready to hear and take to heart, the exhortation of the apostle Paul.

The Sermon Notes of Harold Buls
The Sermon Notes of Harold Buls

Text from Luke 11:1-13
Easter V
1. While Jesus was praying, one of the disciples made a request (vs.1) but vs. 5 says Jesus addressed them , more than one. 2. This is the only instance in the Gospels of a request to Jesus for teaching people. And vs. 1 tells us that the Baptist taught His disciples. 3. The Lord's Prayer was spoken by Jesus one year earlier at Mt. 6:9-13. That was in Galilee. This second time in Lk. 11 occurred very likely in Judea. This is a shorter form of the Lord's Prayer. 4. Jesus begins with the word "Father" (vs. 2) and ends with the same word (vs. 13). Jesus spoke often of His Father all the way from Lk. 2:49 to Lk. 23:43. The NT is full of the word "Father". Only Christians, those who believe in Christ, address God as "Father". Muslims and Jews do not use the word. 5. Only Lutherans, on the basis of the Bible, believe that the Word and the Sacraments are means of grace, ways by which God comes to us. For example Rom. 10:17; I Pet. 1:23: Eph. 5:26; Mt. 26:28. Prayer is not called a means of grace. At Lk. 8:11 Jesus said: "The seed is the Word." He did not say: "The seed is prayer." The means of grace bring us forgiveness of sins and salvation. Prayer is an exercise of faith, a response of the Christian to God. Parents feed their children daily bread. The children respond by speaking to their parents. 6. Because the Lord's Prayer is the model prayer in which Jesus enumerates all our needs, Luther made it one of the chief parts of both the Small and the Large Catechism. Before you preach on Luke 11 read again pp. 17-20 in the Russian Lutheran Catechism. At Lk. 11:2 the better manuscripts of the NT do not include the third petition. Evidently, Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer often but did not always use the same form. Prayer is not rigid and mechanical. In the Lord's Prayer Jesus teaches us what we should pray for. Vss. 5-13 tell us how we are to pray.

Combine learning and enjoyment as you experience three days of personal tuition from leading national and international artists. This year the classes are a little different. There will be three classes (sessions) a day. Session 1 and Session 2 will be with the teacher of your choice. Session 3 will allow you to have a third class each day with your choice of tutor. Changing for Session 3 will depend on availability, of course, but we will make every effort to facilitate your choice. An extra for 2003 is a Teacher's Concert/Dinner on the night of the first day's classes. This will be at the North Canberra Bowling Club, which is the usual venue for The Merry Muse, in Turner. There will be a buffet dinner with performance from the tutors, and opportunities for tutors and students to socialise. Pre-booking is important, because space is limited. All the classes are for players of at least an intermediate standard.

Well, There is a Christian saying. It says, "Prophets died, saints died, great men died - none of them ever returned to life. When Christ died some people remembered that he had foretold his resurrection..."
The reference of Bible
Behind the festive joys, feast, fun and family enjoyment, Easter reminds all of a significant event. The event that Jesus Christ was resurrected, after having suffered and died. It reminds you that Christ, who was crucified on, what is now called, the Good Friday, showed himself up on the Easter. So, it is a time to celebrate. To celebrate - that Lord, who appeared on Earth for the good of mankind, is always with us.
That Jesus would resurrect was foretold. The saying came as one of his prophecies.
And, with memories sharpened by hatred, his enemies were the first to remember his prophecy. Hardly had he been buried when they approached the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate with a request to guard the tomb. Pilate gave them soldiers and instructed them to secure the tomb. They went, sealed the stone that closed the entrance, and set the guards to keep watch day and night.

Schools often celebrate the spring season in assembly and in curriculum project work. Teaching about spring conveys more than biological information. Spring is about life, and education about spring says something of what life is about. It often includes the Christian festival of Easter. New life It is important that children are made aware of different understandings of 'new life'.
  • Spring sees the natural world's recovery from the apparent death of winter. New growth springs from the dormant roots, and animals wake from hibernation. Neither was really dead. Spring may encourage us to hope that death is not really what it seems; that somewhere in death there remain the seeds of life. Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the real death He suffered on the cross. The resurrection of Jesus means, not that death didn't completely get Him, but that it did, and He defeated it. He did not revive like a plant, or wake like a hedgehog. He died as a man and lived again for ever because God raised Him from real death.

Make the grade at Easter
A week of special study at the last minute can make all the difference to your results, says Fran Abrams
Tuesday January 22, 2002

Thumping heart. Sweaty palms. Sleepless nights. And that's just the parents. The run-up to GCSEs or A-levels can be traumatic for all the family. Is there anything to be done? If your beloved has daydreamed his or her way through the past two years or spiralled into despair with the onset of exam year, is it too late to put things right? No. Thankfully, help is at hand. New research shows last-minute revision courses really do make a difference. And while once they were restricted mainly to private tutorial colleges in affluent areas, they are now much more widely available.

Two of the hardest things for kids to remember are the sequence of Holy Week events and the people who populate the stories (so many of them). Some of the following choices will help your students learn these things better than others. Other choices will help you more with "meaning." Of course, the "meaning" gets lost without the memories. Ideally, you will have time to do both important learning tasks. Method of Using Multiple Pieces of Software in One Jesus Lesson:
There are many programs which touch on something about Holy Week. One creative way to design your lesson, then, is to pull from these various resources rather than depend on one program to do it all. I call this the

Stockholm Syndrome that peculiar condition in which a captive grows to love and respect his captor is real, and if you're skeptical, you can experience it yourself with Oneida's Each One Teach One . A band with one the greatest, hokiest stage names in rock ties you up, stares you down, and works you over like Lennox Lewis pounding the heavy bag. After thirty minutes of tunneling, psychedelic 70s sludge (only the first of two discs), Oneida spits in your face, daring you to love them. Each One Teach One goes right for the throat: the numbing, rusty buzz of "Sheets of Easter" is one of the least enticing ways I can imagine opening a record, yet somehow, after absorbing the full impact of this 14-minute onslaught, I realized I'd enjoyed myself. It's hard to recommend a relentlessly hypnotic slab of skull-crushing repetition, but "Sheets of Easter" is exactly the sort of ballsy move that makes so many love and respect Oneida. Churning guitars cycle a heart-stopping riff ad nauseam, but the effect is so mesmerizing, it's hard to fault the band for stealing a quarter-hour of my life away. During "Antibiotics", the second and final track on disc one, Oneida sets the brain-blender from frappe to puree. It begins with a slick organ line courtesy of Fat Bobby, and seems to tout another sixteen minutes of intoxicating drone, but that catchy melody gives way, mutating in fractal order and deviating further and further from its set course. Guitars flare up, slightly off-cue, effects kick in unexpectedly, and the keyboard riff itself slithers into a different skin. From deep within the ever-changing swirl and just past the ten-minute mark an actual song emerges, but naturally, the shit hits the fan. What became solid for a moment soon collapses. There are no survivors.

Harrogate Tutorial College is the main provider of private tuition in the area. Twenty years ago the demand for individual tuition at Easter was so great that we became one of the first recognised colleges to introduce small group Easter Revision courses. These are designed to help students achieve examination grades well above those they originally expected, but are not intended for students who have done little or no work in their subjects. Teaching Staff: The tutors for these courses normally teach in the college on our one and two year GCSE and A level courses. They are in command of the subjects they teach and also have considerable experience outside education. Our students gain good results, this is due, in no small way, to the skill of their tutors. Classes: We have a very direct approach to examination success. The small classes, average four, maximum eight students, generate an informal, student orientated approach with the emphasis on high quality work. All our tutors are very experienced in responding to the requirements of individual students and the demands of the examination syllabuses, many of them are examiners. Students enjoy being at the college and accept that they must work hard. For many it is very different from school. Subjects: These are listed on the college application form. We offer tuition in over 30 subjects at GCSE and A level.
