I. THREE THOUGHTS TAUGHT BY THIS GOSPEL.
2. The second thought this Gospel presents is an example of the power and fruit of the resurrection as manifested in these two disciples while they are talking of him and listening to his preaching. This also is nothing less than a portion of the proof of his resurrection. For Christ here proves by word and deed that he is not dead, as they believed before, but works in them and exercises his
Page 284 -
power through the Word, even before they know him, and makes believers of them who have another mind, reason, heart, and will. This they also recognize and confess, saying: "Was not our heart burning within us while he spake to us, etc?" After this manner he still works in the whole Christian church; though unseen, he yet carries on his work and shows his dominion in that, as the living Lord, he enlightens them through his Word, comforts and strengthens them, defends them with his power and keeps them against the wrath of the devil and the world.

Sean Heuston FROM A LETTER BY THE LATE FATHER ALBERT, O.F.M. CAP. I am glad to be able to comply with your request for "some particulars about the closing scenes of Sean Heuston’s life." Shortly after Easter Week, 1916, I gave a rather full account for publication in The Catholic Bulletin, but owing to the censor restrictions it could not appear in print. The following is a brief summary of what came under my notice on Sunday night, May 7th. Father Augustine and myself were notified that we would be required at Kilmainham Gaol the following morning as four of the leaders in the Rising were to be executed. At 1.30 am a military motor car came for us to Church St., and on our arrival at Kilmainham we were brought to the wing of the jail in which our friends were confined. In his last letter to his sister – a Dominican nun – he wrote: Let there be no talk of "foolish enterprises." I have no vain regrets. If you really love me, teach the children the history of their own land and teach them that the cause of Caitlin ni h-Uallachain never dies. Ireland shall be free from the centre to the sea as soon as the people of Ireland believe in the necessity for Ireland’s freedom and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to obtain it.

Psalm 143
Ezekiel 37:1-14
37:1 The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 37:2 He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. 37:3 He said to me, "Mortal, can these bones live?" I answered, "O Lord GOD, you know." 37:4 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 37:5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 37:6 I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD." 37:7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 37:8 I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. 37:9 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live."

Suggestions, Questions and Answers for Easter Eggs
Eggs
Q. How do you empty the eggs out? (from TS-san in Ottawa Ontario, Feb. 2, 1997) A. Very good question. We had had exactly the same question. There is no good book to describe about emptying contents of eggs. A book we have says just "Use an egg-blower!" Therefore, we had asked Tanya to obtain an egg blower for us. But she suggested us as follows: (from TM-san in Edmonton, Canada) The best egg-blower is yourself. All other devices don't manage to get all the yolk out and so the person must always end-up blowing the last bid out anyway. The hardest part of blowing out an egg is the beginning. You can make it easier by getting a needle and syringe. Fill the syringe with air and then inject the air into the egg. Do this 2 or 3 times, it gets rid of the main part of the yolk and makes blowing on it easier. I (Tanya) think this is a better alternative than spending money on a blower and then still having to end up doing it yourself anyway. Just hold the egg and blow through one of the holes to force the contents out of the other hole. We believed her and we have been doing so. We are using just a pin instead of a needle and syringe. Piercing the yolk with a pin and shaking the egg vigorously will help make blowing easier. It's a lot of work for us, but we indeed enjoy the work. So far, HK-san has broken two eggs.

Easter Acts of Consecration To be prayed at the beginning of each prayer below: Leader: Let us commend ourselves and all people to the love and protection of the Mother of God.
All: Holy Mother of God, Mary ever Virgin, intercede for us with the Lord our God.
Leader: God who is mighty has done great things for us.
All: And holy is God's name.
Leader: Let us pray: Sunday Mary,
On this, the Lord's Day,
We celebrate with joy the fulfillment of the miracle
God began in your womb.
He became what we are
So that we might become what he is.
He is Risen, the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. He reigns as Lord and God forever. In your marveling at the great things the Mighty One worked in you, We find our own awe at being chosen sons (and daughters) of God, Of being empowered to become a nation of saints, Of being commissioned to bear Christ to the world. With you as our companion and model, May God bring this good work to completion And may our dedication to you of all that we have and are Bring us to share in your blessedness. Amen.

Our Favorite Easter Books
By Kathy Bennett
I don't have anything against the Easter Bunny, but I don't want him to be the main focus of Easter celebrations in our home. The following three books are ones I've shared with my kids to teach them about the real reason we celebrate on Easter Sunday. The Easter Story written and illustrated by Carol Heyer
recommended age level - 4-8
ISBN 0824984390 hard cover Order this Book from Amazon.com In this book, Carol Heyer recounts the last week of Christ's life on earth, from His triumphant entry into Jerusalem to His resurrection. Other authors have told this story before and since, but none have done so with Heyer's incredibly vivid illustrations. We read this book every year as part of our Easter celebration. easter SEASON IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA. easter season is a time of many differenthappenings. Ash Wednesday is the official start of the easter Season.
http://www.dwaffleman.com/Easter in South Philly.htm
EASTER SEASON IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA Easter season is a time of many different happenings. Before I go on, let me explain some of the terms I have used to identify the Easter season. Please do not consider the following as a historical or religious lesson. They are only my memories and could differ from yours. Easter Sunday is the day on which Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is never on the same date. It is determined by a formula created in ancient times. Easter Sunday is the Sunday immediately after the first full moon that occurs on or after March 21st. Fat Tuesday is the unofficial name of the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It is the last chance that you had to indulge in your desires before the Lenten season started. Ash Wednesday is the official start of the Easter Season. The ashes refer to the ashes, which are made from the Palms fronds that remained from last Easter season. The ashes are applied to the foreheads of penitents as a mark of their commitment to the Lenten season. Lent is the forty days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. It is the time of season observed by Catholics to abstain from food by fasting, penitence, and self-denial.

95. Easter - The Peril And The Promise - Dial Bishop Hanson
God brings forth change through the prayer of people. How can we teachand mentor more of our people into utilizing the gift of prayer?
http://www.elca.org/ob/text/020501.html

Dial Bishop Hanson
HOTLINE FOR MAY 1, 2002 This Church is a Praying Church This is Mark Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop. Many people that I have met over these first few months in this call have asked me, "How are you doing?" A number of these same people have gone on to ask if there is anything they can do for me. Without a question, my number one response is asking for prayer for this church, its leaders, and for me. I was privileged to have been raised in a praying family. Each one of us took turns leading devotions and praying. How important it is to make prayer part of our daily life. I am amazed at the number of people who have shared with me how prayer has changed their lives. As I encounter people across this church I am so impressed by what a praying church we are! At the same time we must deepen our commitment to becoming a praying church, that we might embrace all that God has in store for us, to accomplish God's mission in and for the sake of the world. Dietrich Bonhoeffer once wrote, "A Christian community either lives by the intercessory prayers of its members for one another, or the community will be destroyed." In "Intercessory Prayer" Bonhoeffer wrote, "The face that may have been strange and intolerable to me is transformed into the face of one for whom Christ died – the face of a pardoned sinner."
