What is Ebola hemorrhagic fever?
Electron micrograph of Ebola virus. Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees) that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976. The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa, where it was first recognized. The virus is one of two members of a family of RNA viruses called the Filoviridae. There are four identified subtypes of Ebola virus. Three of the four have caused disease in humans: Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan, and Ebola-Ivory Coast. The fourth, Ebola-Reston, has caused disease in nonhuman primates, but not in humans. Where is Ebola virus found in nature?

Fact Sheet N° 103
Revised December 2000 EBOLA HAEMORRHAGIC FEVER
Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF) is one of the most virulent viral diseases known to humankind, causing death in 50-90% of all clinically ill cases. The disease has its origins in the jungles of Africa and Asia. Several different forms of Ebola virus have been identified and may be associated with other clinical expressions, on which further research is required. Transmission
  • The Ebola virus is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs or semen of infected persons. Transmission through semen may occur up to seven weeks after clinical recovery, as with Marburg haemorrhagic fever. Transmission of the Ebola virus has also occurred by handling ill or dead infected chimpanzees, as was documented in Côte d'Ivoire and Gabon. Health care workers have frequently been infected while attending patients. In the 1976 epidemic in Zaire, every Ebola case caused by contaminated syringes and needles died.
Incubation: 2 to 21 days Symptoms: Ebola is often characterized by the sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, limited kidney and liver functions, and both internal and external bleeding.

Last updated Wednesday 26.06.2002 9:04 PM Well that's it for Ebola, we are no more, the distances between us became too great an impediment (see Ebola Biography for the full band history). I was trying to form a new band with some of the Ebola folk but the restrictions my personal commitments placed in the way mean that this is no longer a possibility.
Some of the others may re-group in some form and rise again, but as I live in splendid geographical isolation in Newcastle it is highly unlikely I would be in position to participate.
I am reluctant to hang up my guitar after all of these years but realistically other than forming a one man band I don't really see what options I have got, as I know no one in the immediate geographical area with the same musical tastes and the ability to participate in a band.

Dr. Frederick A. Murphy Talks about the Ebola Virus
An Interview by Sean Henahan, Access Excellence The book "The Hot Zone" and the film "Outbreak" have seized the public's imagination and brought into focus many issues regarding the very real threats posed by new and emerging diseases. In this interview we talk with Frederick A. Murphy , D.V.M., Ph.D., Dean of School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis. At the time of the 'Reston incident', Dr. Murphy was the director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC in Atlanta. Dr. Murphy is considered one of the world authorities on viruses. He was the first one to look at Ebola virus 'face-to-face' in the electron microscope. Dr. Murphy appears in "The Hot Zone" and his now famous photo of the Ebola virus appears in the film "Outbreak". Note:
Dr. Murphy has also provided an extensive bibliography and three excellent electron micrographs to accompany this interview. Q: The book "The Hot Zone" and more recently the film "Outbreak" have brought public attention to the reality of emerging viruses and potentially disastrous epidemics. It can be difficult to tell fact from fiction with these kind of sources. I'd like to ask some questions gathered from high school science teachers and students all over the country to clarify some of the issues raised by this book and this movie. A: The public response to the book and the film has been phenomenal. Half of the posts for a virology conference on the Internet I look at are about the Ebola virus. I myself have had innumerable calls from the press and other media people. By the way, I want to say hello to the Access Excellence people and say I had a great time down at Genentech last summer when I spoke on the subject of new and emerging diseases.

http://www.accessexcellence.org/WN/SUA01/ebola.html
EBOLA OUTBREAK UPDATE ATLANTA - Investigators at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hav confirmed that the Ebola virus is behind outbreak of hemorrhagic fever in Zaire. The outbreak has led to an army-enforced quarantine of Kikwit, a city of 600,000 people and the dispatch of biohazard experts from CDC and the WHO to the area. In a strongly worded message, the U.S. State department has strongly advised all others to stay well clear of the area. The outbreak evidently began about a month ago with the death of a surgery patient at a hospital in Kikwit, 375 miles east of Kinshasa, and has now claimed more than 100 lives. Additional reports suggest the outbreak has spread to a hospital in Masengo, a town 60 miles from Kikwit. The symptoms of Ebola virus include fever, rash and massive hemorrhaging from all body orifices. In previous outbreaks of Ebola virus, 88% of patients have died, most within a period of weeks. Poor hygiene at hospitals has been linked to the spread the virus in both the past and current outbreaks. CDC investigators now en route to Kikwit will be equipped with the now familiar protective'space suits' and respirators, based on the assumption that they will encounter a Biosafety Level 4 agent.
