CAMASE Register of Agro-ecosystems Models
Summary: The CAMASE Register of Agro-ecosystem Models is a service of CAMASE, Concerted Action for the development and testing of quantitative Methods of research on Agricultural Systems and the Environment. The organization specializies in "...[d]evelopment and testing of quantitative methods for research on agricultural systems and the environment..." and seeks to share crop modelling information among European groups. The register is a compilation of European models used for education, research, and application in the agricultural field. Links at the top of the site provide information on the register, register field definitions (terms found in the entries of models), a list of all models in the register, and search tips. When viewing all the register's models, users should select a title to view its individual record. Within the main section of the site's page are search fields: name, keyword, author, purpose (three subdivisions), program type (four subtopics), and subject (eight subtopics). After selecting the applicable fields, users will receive a listing of applicable models. Selecting a model name then reveals its complete record. A model's entry contains: (1) name and model version; (2) title; (3) date of first profile; (4) date of last profile; (5) update; (6) program type; (7) purpose; (8) uses research, teaching, and applications; (9) new release expected; (10) subject; (11) aggregation level; (12) description; (13) scientific specification of simulation models; (14) technical specifications of simulation models; and (15) contact information (business address, phone, fax, and e-mail information). At the bottom of the site's main page are links to the site creators, to add a model to the register, and to the CAMASE homepage.

THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL ECOLOGY:
AN OVERVIEW Social Ecology's faculty is multidisciplinary , including psychologists with a variety of specialties (e.g., developmental, social, environmental, and health psychology); criminologists; sociologists; political scientists; lawyers; urban and regional planners and economists; environmental health scientists; and program evaluation experts. The School's research and teaching is distinguished by an emphasis on the integration of the concepts and perspectives of these multiple disciplines. This focus is based on the School's core belief that the analysis and amelioration of complex societal problems requires interdisciplinary efforts. Many Social Ecology faculty are involved in developing policies and interventions directed toward improving the functioning of individuals, families and other groups, organizations, institutions, and communities, while other faculty in the School focus their efforts on the complex environmental issues confronting our society. Social Ecology undergraduate students benefit from the multidisciplinary instructional expertise of the School's faculty in the classroom and are afforded opportunities to engage in field-based learning, as well, through the School's well-established and highly regarded field studies program. Graduate students work closely with the faculty in the classroom and on important research projects that enhance their research skills.

Graduate Studies in Ecology At the global, national, and local levels, interest in ecological research and education has increased. The biosphere is experiencing increasingly severe assaults by pressures of expanding human populations. Climate change, tropical deforestation, and profound reductions in biodiversity are among the serious environmental concerns that are global in scope. At regional scales, water quality and quantity, endangered species, the threat of introduced exotic species to regional biodiversity, and the rapid disappearance of riparian ecosystems are paramount. Attention to the need for research and education in the ecological arena has risen dramatically in response to these threats. Arizona State University's strong group of ecology faculty in Life Sciences (core faculty) and other departments (supporting faculty) are taking on the challenge of training graduate students into the 21st century. A goal is better integration of basic research and ecological applications such as conservation, management, and environmental protection. Faculty in the Departments of Biology and Plant Biology offer graduate degree programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees with a concentration in Ecology. Students acquire broad backgrounds in Biology or Plant Biology, and specialize in a wide variety of ecological sub-disciplines. Students also have opportunities to interact with environmental scientists (supporting faculty) in twelve different departments across the University.

The flourishing life within the briny habitat of sea ice. The ice specific ecosystem includes bacteria, viruses, unicellular algae, diatom chains, worms and crustaceans. Click on the image to see a magnified view of the brine channels containing these organisms. The flourishing life within the briny habitat of sea ice is intricately linked to physical processes. Temperature controls every physical and chemical aspect of ice, including the availability of light. The most notable effect of decreasing temperature, as winter progresses and the ice solidifies, is the reduction of pore space within the ice, and the concurrent increase in the salinity of the brine. Sea ice serves as habitat for an ice-specific food web ( sympagic foodweb ] that includes bacteria, viruses

    Ecology Software Server
This site continues to develop as a clearinghouse for wildlife ecology related software. All software has been virus scanned. Contents of this site are listed in the subject index . The majority of this software is PC based (DOS and Microsoft Windows programs) and often requires pkunzip to extract. We have found several Mac software packages; a very few Mac users may require 'UnStuffit' or 'BinHex' to get at them. Some programming language code is available including programs accompanying textbooks. Most code was written for PC based platforms, but some may be compiled on other platforms. We solicit programs within the following categories for inclusion at this site: habitat analysis, diversity indices, simulation, general population dynamics, capture/recapture, survival, energetics, statistics, home range, telemetry, data collection, etc. To submit software , send the contribution to the site administrator as an e-mail attachment or through postal mail (addresses below). As this site grows it becomes difficult to know if we are maintaining current versions of software. Contributors are encouraged to contact us if if they find dated versions of their software being distributed. Software found here has been (or should have been) obtained with permission from the programmer or the administrator of the site from where it was copied. Please contact this site's administrator if you feel software is being distributed without appropriate consent. In our attempt to be comprehensive and better serve the user community, links to commercial software packages have been included among these pages. Decisions to include commercial links are based solely on the relevance of the software product to the theme of this site.

Over the past several years of my PhD, my research has brought me more than once into the field to investigate insect distributions through field trapping and aspects of moth chemical ecology. My current position in the Vicker's lab (University of Utah), has provided me with an opportunity to augment my experience with more complex laboratory analyses. More importantly, this lab looks at the very basis of insect pheromone processing, genetic and developmental control of pheromone perception a nd related neuroanatomy, and hopefully, mapping of moth responses to odors within the antennal lobe.

    Glossary for Biogeography
NOTE: Terms are arranged according to the following subject categories: biogeography, ecology, evolution, landscape ecology, and taxonomy. This should not be taken to mean that any term is limited in use or definition to a particular discipline; the arrangement is a pedagogical device to help the beginning student in biogeography to make associations among various words and processes. Each term also may be accessed through the index at the end of this document.
    Biogeographic terminology
    Alien:
a non-native species, especially one introduced to some part of the world through human action.
    Altitudinal zonation:
the sorting of plant and animal species according to elevation in response to differences in temperature and precipitation patterns.
    Biogeography:
the science that studies the distribution of life, past and present.
    Colonization:
the establishment of a population in a place formerly unoccupied by that species. Colonization implies successful reproduction in the new area, not simply the presence of a species there.
    Dispersal:
the transport of propagules beyond the limits of a species' distribution area
    Distribution area:
the geographic range of a taxon.

The most important result of research on nature therefore is: to discover unity in the manifoldness, to recognize individual discoveries made in the past, to assess these without surrendering to their mass, and, mindful of the unique rĂ´le of the human species, capture the essence of nature which is hidden under the surface of outward appearances.
