Organizations
The Pacific Northwest Pollution Prevention Resource Center (PPRC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing unbiased pollution prevention information. PPRC developed a Product Stewardship Web page that includes information about product stewardship tools for manufacturers, including eco-labeling, lifecycle management, green purchasing, and product takeback. For each tool, the Web page provides tips and a checklist for program implementation. It also lists existing product stewardship projects and provides links to useful Websites. In the future, PPRC will post information for suppliers, distributors, retailers, consumers, and government organizations.

NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES FOR THE 2002 BIWAKO PRIZE FOR ECOLOGY
Dear Sir / Madam: The Shiga Prefectural Government in Japan has consistently promoted programs that further humanity's sustainable coexistence with environment. In 1991, the Shiga Prefectural Government established the Biwako Prize for Ecology in its desire to play a greater role in environmental conservation and to make a greater contribution to the international community. The Biwako Prize is aimed at supporting individuals engaged in the study of ecology or related sciences dealing with aquatic and/or watershed environments. The prize is awarded annually to an individual who has achieved academically or socially significant research and who is expected to continue to advance this research at a similar level of accomplishment. On the 12th occasion of the awarding of the Biwako Prize for Ecology, we consider it essential to seek further development of this prize by continuing our commendation of high-level researchers as appropriate to the purpose of the award. To more accurately reflect the deepening and expansion of the research content of ecological studies, we have decided to revise our system and extend the screening period from three months to over six months, and change the management/commendation cycle for the prize from the present one year to two years, thereby improving the selection and management activities for this award. Related to this, we hereby invite candidates to apply for the 12th Biwako Prize for Ecology in accordance with the rules stated in the enclosed prize invitation guidance pamphlet. We look forward to receiving many recommendations of suitable candidates.

    ABSTRACT
To meet the challenges of poverty and environmental sustainability, a different kind of research will be needed. This research will need to embrace the complexity of these systems by redirecting the objectives of research toward enhancing adaptive capacity, by incorporating more participatory approaches, by embracing key principles such as multi-scale analysis and intervention, and by the use of a variety of tools (e.g., systems analysis, information management tools, and impact assessment tools). Integration will be the key concept in the new approach; integration across scales, components, stakeholders, and disciplines. Integrated approaches, as described in this Special Feature, will require changes in the culture and organization of research.

    Careers in Ecology
: from Greek oikos = house (place we live) logos = (study of)
WHAT DO ECOLOGISTS DO? The work of ecologists is extremely important. Anything that involves whole organisms and the living and non-living things around them involves ecology. Whether they investigate urban, suburban, rural, forest, desert, farm, fresh water, estuarine, or marine environments, ecologists help us understand the connections between organisms and their environment. Ecologists are employed in many different places - universities, government agencies, consulting firms, research laboratories, museums, field stations, parks and recreation areas, and industry - and their salaries are similar to other employees with the same amount of experience and academic training. Ecologists...
