Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture : Guide to Courses
Overview
In April 1995 the new Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture was formed from the an amalgamation of the University's Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture (VCAH). The Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture is the largest only university faculty in Australia to offer training in both agricultural science and forest science. It has one of the oldest and largest university schools of agriculture (established in 1905) and one of only two schools of forestry recognised by the Standing Committee on Forestry of the Australian Forestry Council. The Faculty now operates from eight campuses: Parkville, Creswick (Forestry), Dookie, Burnley, Gilbert Chandler, Glenormiston, Longerenong and McMillan. In addition, the Faculty has access to a research farm at Strathfieldsaye in East Gippsland. Close teaching and research links exist with the Faculties of Arts; Architecture and Planning; Economics and Commerce; Engineering Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; Science; and Veterinary Science. Students in undergraduate courses at Parkville may take elective subjects from one or more of these faculties.

Courses for and about women in development: a case study
J.E. Smithells Introduction The Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Department (previously the AERD Centre) has been actively concerned with the needs and changing roles of women in the context of agricultural and rural development since its inception. This concern has taken the form of research and publications, provision of a range of short courses and formal taught courses (including the institution of a Diploma level course in 1989), and contributions to the international discussion about the importance of women in rural development and the special issues which this raises. In 1968/69, the Overseas Development Ministry (now the Overseas Development Administration [ODA]) funded a survey by the AERDC of the training needs of women extension staff in selected African and Caribbean countries (Smithells, 1972). On the basis of the findings, a typology of training provision was proposed in terms of the functions of the training for both individuals and organisations: (a) Basic training
    - intermediate level
    - university level (b) Supplementary training
    - field staff
    - staff trainers
    - supervisors and managers (c) Career development training This typology has provided a framework for considering what contribution would be most appropriate for the AERDC (and AERDD) to make to the education and training of women for service in rural development.

    EUROPEAN INGENIEUR DEGREE
CAH Dronten, a member of the Association of Professional Universities in Agriculture in The Netherlands, offers several degree programmes for Students in agricultural sciences and related subject from partner universities abroad.
The one-year programmes CAH Dronten offers to students from partner universities are: An English-language comparative one year programme spent in intensive training and study in The Netherlands will prepare successful graduates for positions in middle management in international companies in the agribusiness and food industries. Graduates will have first-hand knowledge of practice in one of the EU countries traditionally successful in this sector, even on the European market, and so gain valuable insight into the contrasts in business culture and work ethics existing between regions in Europe.
When the program is completed with good results the student will obtain the Dutch ingenieur title (abbreviation: Ing.). This title denotes the degree obtained by graduates from the Dutch HBO, or Higher Professional Education System. The Institutes in this system offer Higher Education in the University sector. The programmes, however, are professionally oriented, which implies that they promote skills in the practical applicability and transferability of research rather than focusing on the more radical and fundamental types of research itself.
