Jay H. Levin, Chairman Delores Tennille, Administrative Assistant Economists frequently describe their work as the study of how individuals and societies allocate limited resources to try to satisfy unlimited wants. Economics is a science of choices. Household and firms must decide what and how much to consume or to produce, and how much to pay for products and for the use of labor, land, and capital. The federal government makes decisions affecting unemployment, inflation, taxation and expenditures, the monetary system, and international trade. Together, these public and private choices determine the prosperity of the nation, the region, and local areas, and they shape the distribution of national wealth. Since every social relationship has economic aspects, an understanding of economic principles and systems is an integral part of a liberal education.
    Programs
The Department of Economics offers programs at the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral levels. The Department offers fields of specialization in health care economics, industrial organization, international economics, labor economics, monetary economics, and urban economics. At all levels the Department focuses on high quality teaching, research, and service to the community and to the profession.

    G ENERAL I NFORMATION
GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Economics at Howard University provides students with a sound foundation in economic theory and its applications. Coupled with this is a concerted effort to produce students who are competent in the use of the quantitative tools in analysis. This is supplemented by a state of the art computer laboratory. The economics program provides a unique opportunity to gain experience and employment in research and policy making institutions in Washington.
    CAREER OPTIONS IN ECONOMICS:
We prepare undergraduate students in economics for a number of different career options. This includes institutions in the federal and state governments, private corporations and a variety of public interest organizations. An undergraduate degree in Economics is also an excellent preparation for a career in Law, as it provides a solid training in objective reasoning. Particularly relevant to economics are issues of regulation in the areas of communication, public utilities, securities trading, transportation and trade. The undergraduate program also prepares students for graduate degrees in economics, law and business. Students may contact the Director of Internships and Placement for internship opportunities in the Washington area.

    About the Field
The General Business major at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater provides students with a broader look at the field of business. Rather than concentrating in one specific field such as accounting, economics, finance, management, office systems, or marketing, you choose courses from several of these fields. You design your major within boundaries established by the College of Business and Economics. You may take up to four courses in any one field or department. The general business major also has three emphases that provide students an opportunity to concentrate coursework within a specific area or emphasis.
    General Business - Entrepreneurship
The entrepreneurship emphasis is for those students who are interested in operating a small business or starting their own business upon graduation.
    General Business - International
The international emphasis, a cooperative program with the Foreign Language Department, prepares students for positions with companies doing business internationally.
    General Business - Business Law
This emphasis provides students with sufficient knowledge of law to recognize legal problems as they arise and with the ability to adequately coordinate the operation of the business with the aid and guidance of the attorney retained by the firm.

    General Management Major
    Management Department
    About the Field
Worldwide competition and increasing environmental complexity and dynamism are having a dramatic effect on how organizations are structured and managed. Downsizing, or learning how to do more with less, is increasing the need for managers as generalists, highly skilled in terms of planning, organizing, motivating and controlling a broad spectrum of organizational activities. Organizations are being pushed to structure their workforces into teams capable of developing innovative solutions to complex problems, headed by project managers. In addition, small businesses continue to play an important role in all sectors of our economy through their ability to innovate and service niche markets. Thus the need for professional general managers will continue to remain strong into the future.
    Career Paths
Graduates of the General Management major are well received by the business world. According to members of the General Management Advisory Board (a board made up of professional managers and management experts who aid the faculty in strategic decision making), many employers view managerial skills to be as or more important than fuctional(marketing, finance, accounting, etc.) expertise. Placement of General Management graduates in 1994/1995 was 92%. The average salary of those graduates was approximately $25,620 and because these graduates have emphasized management training throughout their majors they are well positioned for early promotion through the managerial ranks. Graduates have found careers in all sectors of the economy including service, retailing, manufacturing, financial and government, and a number have started their own businesses or continued toward a graduate degree.
