That's the conclusion of a research team using data from the Microwave Limb Sounder on NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite. The findings, published in the current issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research , provide the first consistent, three-dimensional picture of ozone loss during multiple Arctic winters. The findings confirm previous Arctic ozone loss estimate variations. "This work provides a consistent picture of how Arctic ozone loss varies between winters," said lead researcher Dr. Gloria Manney, a senior research scientist with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "Scientists will have a better understanding of current Arctic ozone conditions and be better able to predict variations in the future."

NEPAD Misunderstands The Politics Of International Economics
Africa News
June 14, 2002
In April this year the British charity, Oxfam, launched its three-year campaign on fair trade. To back this campaign, it issued a study whose title is suggestive of the hypocrisy of the developed countries - Rigged Rules And Double Standards: Trade, Globalisation, And The Fight Against Poverty. The report has been rightly criticised in some non-governmental organisation (NGO) circles for being too focused on providing a market-based solution to the condition of poverty of the poor countries. Nonetheless, coming from a respected Western mega-NGO, it is an important document. The study provides proof of the double standards applied by the Western countries, and on the manipulation of international trade rules, especially in the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This should provide good reason for African (as indeed other Third World) countries to take serious note of what is happening around them, and wake up from the illusions they nurse, such as the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad), for example. Nepad is fundamentally flawed in its premises and assumptions. The strategy it offers is unrealistic. It is based on the illusion that it is in the interest of the developed countries to bale out Africa with enormous doses of foreign direct investments (FDIs) if only Africa puts its house in order in the economic and political governance front as directed by the developed countries.

We aim to increase the ability of students not only to analyse ecological and social challenges, but also to actively implement solutions. Being involved is the second step. This is the oikos way of making a difference!
Students are tomorrow's decision makers and we believe that their understanding of sustainability will help them integrate ecological, social as well as economical concerns for their comprehension of a society's development. A development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Here we use the sustainable development definition stemming from the Brundtland Report.
For oikos, development, viewed in a management perspective, is not just about bigger profits, about big bucks but it should be about making life better for all stakeholders. Development is about raising life quality for all.

Globalization Is About More Than Economics
by Kenichi Ohno
International Herald Tribune
January 23, 2002
For developing countries, globalization is far more than increased contacts with the rest of the world through economic liberalization and information technology. With strong and weak countries, power distribution in the real world is highly asymmetric. Integration of a developing country into the world economy hardly affects the societies and ideas of industrialized nations, whereas developing countries are forced to undergo fundamental changes. For them, globalization is tantamount to transforming themselves under intense external stimuli so that they can be incorporated into the global system. This task has to be accomplished without losing one's national identity. Developing countries are experiencing the same challenges that Japan encountered in the second half of the 19th century when it opened its doors to the outside world after long isolation. Vietnam, which I have been advising in the last several years, also has undergone drastic changes. Around 1993, it broke loose from self-imposed isolation and rejoined the world economy. Since then the number of foreigners has increased greatly. Through investment, aid and tourism, foreigners are now the main driving force of the Vietnamese economy. Virtually all houses facing city streets have been converted into shops and restaurants. Souvenir shops targeting Japanese women have emerged in great numbers. The Vietnamese government is aware of the country's economic position in the international pecking order, and understands the severity of international competition. In principle, it is willing to actively participate in the global economy.

The Black Community, Economics, and Time
Bakari Akil II
January 1, 2002
As a young Black man with ambitions and goals, at times I wonder if I will be able to achieve my objectives. Yes, basic goals such as a beautiful wife, a strong family life, an advanced degree and a well balanced life I have achieved without question. These alone proves that I am blessed.
However, we all know that as Black people there is more than the basics. We must be concerned with our well being in terms of the right to live as civilized human beings, our capacity to provide for our families now and in the future and our ability to negotiate our status as well as influence how we are perceived in this world.
All of these concerns are not easily achievable and takes time to bring to reality. Which brings about a new question. How much time? Time is not a renewable commodity, it is fleeting and it is running out for most who are currently in a struggle against these issues.
