It is commonly believed that Asian nomads reached the South American continent by about 12,000 BC and were later joined by Polynesian colonizers. Centuries of tribal expansion, warfare and alliances resulted in the relatively stable Duchicela lineage, which ruled more or less peacefully for about 150 years until the arrival of the Incas around 1450 AD. Despite fierce opposition, the conquering Incas soon held the region, helped by strong leadership and policies of intermarriage. War over the inheritance of the new Inca kingdom weakened and divided the region on the eve of the arrival of the Spanish invaders.

Culture of Ecuador Introduction Straddling the equator, the Ecuadorian coast rushes up to snow-capped volcanoes then falls away to hot Amazon jungleall in a country the size of the State of Colorado! It shares a long-contested border with Peru to the south and east, and is bounded by Colombia to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The country can be divided into four regions: the western coastal lowlands, the central Andean highlands, the eastern jungles of the Amazon basin and - some 1000 KM (620 miles) west of the mainland - the Galapagos Islands. Thanks to its agreeable climate and patchwork of habitats (alpine grasslands, coastal swamps, tropical rainforest), Ecuador is one of the most species-rich nations on earth, and ecologists have dubbed Ecuador a megadiversity hotspot. The Amazon basin, east of the Andes, is an almost impenetrable tangle of rainforest known to Ecuadorians as the Oriente (the East).

The Highlands or "sierra" are warm during the day (60-80 degrees Fahrenheit), and cooler at night (35-55 degrees). Depending on whether the sun is out, temperatures can fluctuate between warm and comfortable to cooler conditions, requiring several layers of clothes. In the dry season, it tends to be warmer, dryer, and dusty. In the rainy season, it may be 10 degrees cooler with frequent rain.
The coastal area or "costa" in general is hot and humid. During the rainy season from January through April, it is hot (80-95 degrees). The dry season from May to December is slightly cooler (70-85 degrees). Due to the frequent wet weather, mold is sometimes a problem during the rainy reason.
The Amazon basin region or "oriente" is usually warm and muggy. Temperatures fluctuate greatly during the day, ranging from 60 to 90 degrees. Although there are dry and rainy seasons, it rains all year around. Because of the humidity, mold is a constant problem.

Culture
The diversity of the country's different regions is reflected in the people and the culture. Ecuador's 12 million people are mostly of Mestizo (45 percent) or Indian heritage (40 percent). Although Spanish is the official language there are numerous recognized languages, including Quichua, which are spoken by the country's many indigenous groups. Ecuador's indigenous groups are also very diverse. In addition to the Quichua, there are many small Amazonian indigenous groups that are struggling for their ethnic and cultural survival. Some of these groups, such as the Zapara, have as few as 24 people still speaking their native language. Ecuador also has sizable Afro-Ecuadorian populations in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Carchi.

Our national coach, the Colombian “Bolillo” Gomez, had anticipated that Ecuador went to this World Cup to learn, as it was its first appearance ever. And that is precisely what we did, although it took us 2 games before understanding what we needed to do in order to win.
After a nervous debut against Italy, who scored twice in the first 25 minutes, we unbelievably lost against Mexico 2 - 1. We started winning with an extraordinary header from Southhampton’s “Tin” Delgado, but our nerves took a toll again, and we conceded two more goals and missed a few.
Against Croatia it was a different story, we played at the level shown in the South American qualifying round. The result: a victory against a country that ended in third place in the last World Cup. Edison Mendez, “Bam Bam” Hurtado, and our captain and star Alex Aguinaga demonstrated their quality, giving the team the necessary energy to finish our first appearance with the thumbs up and the confidence restored.
Little wonder why the Japanese fans were so eager to buy or trade the Ecuadorian team shirts after the game.

Duration 13 days Day 01 : Arrive in Quito. Transfer to hotel Day 02 : Early in the morning, depart from Quito traveling south for 100 miles on a section of the Pan-American Highway named by Alexander Von Humboldt as "The Avenue of the Volcanoes". Along the way we see magnificent scenery with snow capped volcanoes reaching over 18,000 feet. Around 50 miles south of Quito is the city of Latacunga with a large, colorful and scenic Indian market. It has a great variety of produce, many unknown outside of Ecuador. After a visit to the market we continue to the town of Salcedo for lunch at a lovely country inn. Then we drive to Ambato, a town at the foothills of Mount Chimborazo ( 6,310 meters/20,803 feet) the highest in the country and among the five highest peaks in the continent. The open grasslands at the base of this majestic mountain is home to the Hosteria La Andaluza, a colonial hacienda converted into a country inn. Dinner and overnight at this historic inn. Day 03 : Today we get a very early start to catch the train from Riobamba. The train was built around the turn of the last century. We will see some incredible scenery such as the high country around the base of Chimborazo and south to the village of Alausi. The train itself is quite basic, runs very slow and in fact allows an incredible "roof ride". The experience is fantastic and the views superb. It will take about three hours to reach Alausi and it makes a stop for about 40 minutes. Then the train descends into a valley and canyon until it reaches the famous switch back, Devil’s Nose, and into the station where the ride ends. After a long lunch stop the train takes us back to the beginning and back to Riobamba for dinner. After dinner we continue to Baños and overnight in a hotel.
