Cayambe Culture
Just east of the city a pre-Columbian archaeological site exists. The pyramid of the sun and the pyramid of the moon are raised from the surrounding soil. Relics from ancient civilization rise up to the surface after each rain. The family who has been farming the area including the pyramids for years have a great collection of pieces found here. A museum in the southern part of town was created by pottery unearthed by one of the locals. A dream told him to dig under his house to discover a buried treasure. He followed the directions in the dream to find a tunnel filled with ancient pottery. The tunnel has since been closed though the finds can be seen at the museum. Indigenous tribes from all over Northern Ecuador come to Cayambe to celebrate the equinox in March and the summer solstice during July. Thousands of villagers dressed in traditional clothing storm the town square singing, dancing, many wearing masks. The celebration lasts for hours proceeding on to the pyramids for an afternoon picnic. • The Andes are a relatively young mountain chain that began forming five million years ago at the beginning of the Pliocene period. They stretch from the Caribbean to Antarctica and make up the backbone of Ecuador.
The Andes are Ecuador's dominant trait and for millennia have been one of the chief influences on the traditions, crafts and customs of its people.
The German Geologist Vond Humbodt, in awe of the beauty and power of the Ecuadorian Andes , named them the Avenue of the Volcanoes.

Pre-Colombian Art
Through archeological discoveries on the American continent, we are coming in more and more contact with primitive man and with the art that forged his mind; although limited in his advances, it is not any less significant an attempt to give shape to his surrounding reality. In pre-Colombian Ecuador we find people who transformed docile clay into symbolic figures, to which they tried to give form, style, and life. Their determination produced a wide variety of objects, ranging from female figurines (which perhaps would have been connected with fertility rites) to stone and quartz tools, basalt and obsidian spears, etc. In 1956, Ecuadorian archeologist Emilio Estrada Ycaza presented his research on the "Valdivia Culture" to the scientific world. This culture dates from 3,500 years before Christ, and represents the most important of the formative cultures in prehistoric Ecuador.

One of the most beautiful and culturally diverse regions in Ecuador is the area including and surrounding the town of Otavalo. World famous for it's Saturday market, woven textiles, and Otavalan Indian culture, Otavalo is located two hours north of Quito, at an altitude of 2500 meters, and has a population of about 30,000. Although the Saturday market is the largest and most famous in Ecuador, there is an interesting handicrafts market in the Plaza de Los Ponchos every day of the week, as well as numerous wholesale and retail handicrafts shops. On Saturdays, many visitors plan an early morning trip to the animal market, located just outside of town, before they visit the more tourist-oriented crafts market and the local food and housewares markets, which are found nearby. In the surrounding Indian villages, including Peguche, Agato, Illuman and Carabuela, one may visit the homes and workshops of the artisans, and observe several types of weaving as well as knitting, basketmaking, and hat-making. Excellent guided tours of the indigenous villages are available. About a half hour away, the towns of San Antonio and Cotacachi specialize in woodcarving and leathercraft respectively. The traditional music of the Andes may be heard in the streets of Otavalo and in the countryside, as well as in restaurants, hotels and peñas ( folk music clubs). Just outside of town, there are wonderful roads and paths to be hiked, biked or explored by horse. Visitors will observe traditional homes, farms and fields in a stunning patchwork along steep mountain slopes. Nearby waterfalls and two high altitude

Explore Casa Mojanda, our library, garden and grounds, animals, and video collection. You are welcome to climb down the hill to the gorge and explore. Hike to the waterfall, only a half hour on moderate grade. Take a picnic lunch, and explore the forest above the falls. Hike down to town (one hour’s walk) on either of two scenic roads. Inquire about additional long and short walks starting from Casa Mojanda. Take a guided horse tour long or short, for spectacular mountain views. Take a picnic lunch, or return to Casa Mojanda for lunch. Bird watch on any of the nearby paths and trails. Wildflowers will be found year ‘round. Do some mountain biking on easy (downhill), moderate and more challenging trails. If you are interested in biking, try to let us know in advance, so we will be sure to have suitably sized bikes and helmets on hand.
Visit the Mojanda Lakes
where you can hike, fish, look for condors, climb Fuya Fuya or kayak in our two seater Klepper.

Ecuador, one of the most beautiful countries on earth Interested in Ecuador are you? Well that's music to my ears. I have spent only seven months physically in the Andean Nation, but I love Ecuador. Although I'm not physically there anymore, you will find parts of me in Ecuador almost all the time; sometimes my heart, sometimes my mind. If you have never been to Ecuador or know little about this wonderful country, sit back and let me help you become a little better aquatinted. If you have visited Ecuador, then let me refresh your memory and relive some good times with you.
Ecuador lies smack dab on top of the imaginary line we call the Equator. It is on the pacific side of South America and surrounded by Colombia, Peru, and ocean. Ecuador also claims the Galapagos Islands which are some 500 miles off the coast. On the right, there is a map of the provinces in Ecuador. The colors of the map help identify the region that each province is usually associated. I made this map from an Ecuadorian map from 1991 and have tried to adjust the southern borders to the internationally accepted borders but they may be incorrect, so beware that this map may have some problems. The Galapagos map at left is not at the same scale as the rest of the country but gives you a sense of what they look like.
There are four major regions to Ecuador; el oriente (the jungle), la sierra (the Andes), la costa (the coast) and the Galapagos Islands. I've spent time in all four regions but by NO means am I an expert. I'll try to give you a sense of the place and what you might expect. In each section you will find some photos of Ecuador that I took while in this beautiful land. I hope you enjoy my labor of love and please feel free to let me know what you think.
