What makes it so attractive is its glaze, a result of adding ground copper to the quartz, producing a vibrant blue-green color. The color was very symbolic because it represented the most important life source for Egyptians, the Nile River. Egyptians believed that faience embodied the powers of rebirth; in fact, from various writings that spanned the centuries, faience was reverenced in the same way that the sun and stars were. Primary Source has introduced a new subject area geared to elementary and middle school introduction to Ancient Civilizations. The graduate course we offer presents background information, teaching ideas, and materials for six culture areas: The Maya, Mesopotamia, Indus River Valley, Egypt, Nubia and China.
All are bound together thematically according to six key characteristics of civilizations: 1) the ability to raise a food surplus, 2) high population density, 3) growth of labor specialization, 4) development of a sophisticated system for record keeping, 5) increase in social stratification resulting in a class-based social structure, and 6) creation of lasting monumental works.
These concepts provide teachers and students with a powerful organizational framework to guide the study of any civilization. With scholars and master teachers, Primary Source provides accurate chronological information on these early cultures as well as lively classroom activities that bring to life these peoples who lived so long ago.
"This is one of the most exciting courses I have taken. If I was younger, I would even like to try my hand at archaeology. I always love 'hands-on!'"

http://pages.prodigy.net/darvi/greece2.htm
Late Republic - 133-44 BC Rome’s governmental structure starts to fall apart. It was designed for a small polis. Two political parties form. There are the OPTIMATES - the best people of the country. The senatorial aristocracy. POPULARES - the businessmen and others (Caesar was on this side) These two parties were like our liberal and conservatives. There were three major episodes. Tiberius and Gaius Grachus were brothers, their sister was married to the younger Siphio. Tiberius was elected as a tribune in 133 bc and he ran on the platform of agarian reform, wanting to restore the small family farms to the italians. That’s where they got recruits for the army, because you needed to own land to fight in the army. There was land wom in combat which was public owned. The aristocracy wanted it. Tiberius wanted to land to tempt people into needing land. Optimates got another tribune to veto this idea, and the tribune they got was Octavius. They said this was fraud. Tiberius and Gaius had been taught by a tutor about Athenian democracy, and the ability to impeach. Tiberius calls for an impeachment trial. Optimates say that impeachment is Greek, not Roman law. Toberius was slain in a riot that was started by the Optimates. And not quite ten years later in 124 bc Gaius was tribune. GAIS: 1. agrarian reform (but deemphasized)

meets with CC f342 (82880) This course will survey the world of the ancient Greeks from the dawn of the city-state to the rise of Macedon (ca. 800 - 350 B.C.), focusing on their cultural achievements (literary, artistic, intellectual) and on their religious, social, and political world. Attention will be paid to understanding both the Greek "mentality" in the world of the polis through literature like Homer, Sophocles, Thucydides and Plato, and the realities of their public and private lives. We shall explore the relationship between freedom and slavery, democracy and empire, political systems and gender roles, and the individual and larger community. We shall also examine the Greeks' emphasis on human knowledge and achievement (in art, literature, and politics as well as on the battlefield) within the context of a polytheistic religious world, as well as within its broader Mediterranean context. There will be two short quizzes, one midterm examination and one comprehensive final.
