Bedu , the Arabic word from which the name bedouin is derived, is a simple, straightforward tag. It means "inhabitant of the desert," and refers generally to the desert-dwelling nomads of Arabia, the Negev, and the Sinai. For most people, however, the word "bedouin" conjures up a much richer and more evocative imageof lyrical, shifting sands, flowing robes, and the long, loping strides of camels. In the vast, arid expanses of the Sinai, as in the Negev and the deserts of Arabia, the many tribes of the bedouin journeyed by camel from oasis to oasis, following a traditional way of life and maintaining a pastoral culture of exceptional grace, honor, and beauty. Most of the bedouin tribes of the Sinai are descended from peoples who migrated from the Arabian peninsula between the 14th and 18th centuries, making the bedouin themselves relatively recent arrivals in this ancient land. Today, many of the bedouin of the Sinai have traded their traditional existence for the pursuits and the conventions of the modern world, as startling changes over the last two decades have irrevocably altered the nature of life for the bedouin and for the land they inhabit. The rings bearing the names of Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhesenamun, and other numerous finds indicate that the site was one of the major cemetery in the period of the late 18th Dynasty to the early 19th Dynasty. Recently a large granite sarcophagus was found in the innermost substructure of the tomb-chapel, and inscribed name "Mes" on the lid has been found. Three shaft tombs located around the tomb-chapel were excavated in Spring 1999 in order to clarify the character of this cemetery. The latest site plan has been available. It is the city that has attracted the greatest men of letters in the world. The revival of the Alexandria Library is a huge international project which costs millions of dollars. The library shall contain more than 8 million books and a reading area with two thousand seats. This library when it is inaugurated will possess about 400000 volumes in hard and electronic copies. It is designed to hold 4 million volumes. In the future its capacity will reach 8 million using the compressed storage system. A museum will be attached to the library to house the antiquities discovered at the site in 1993-1994 during the excavation work done under the supervision of the of the Egyptian Antiquities Department. The antiquities discovered belong to Pharaonic, Greek and Roman periods. Two statues will be positioned in the museum; one of them will be of the goddess Isis currently at the Marine Museum, and the second one is the statue of King Ptolemy 2 both are made of granite. Within the framework of the cooperation and support of UNESCO and Italy, the Alexandria Library has just received the most modern Photocopy Lab, and will later be provided with a microfilm lab.
