    Geography
    THE LAND
The geography of Egypt was and is very different. On one side you have the desert where the pyramids are built. This is probably what most people imagine when they think of Egypt. On the other side there is the Nile that runs through the whole country and is extremely important to the people as their main source of water. Next to the Nile the land is very green.
    THE NILE
The river Nile was extremely important to the ancient Egyptians. The rise of the water level known as the annual inundation (flood) was connected with their religion. It was linked directly to the god Khnum. They measured the height of the water during the inundation to compare with previous records. This was done using a nilometre,
which was basically a staircase next to the river with marks carved into the wall. The measurement was taken from whichever mark the water had reached to. If the height was more or the same as usual then this was a good sign that the gods were happy. However, if the level was lower then this was considered a bad omen and the gods were not happy with the egyptians.
    TRADE
Trade is relevant after reading about the land of ancient Egypt and the river Nile, as it could take place on both land and water. Goods such as pottery, beer and other household items could be exchanged for money or other goods. The main items that Egypt imported were obviously goods that they didn't have themselves. Most of what they needed they had locally but things such as wood, metal and precious stones and other luxury goods had to be brought in from other countries. Wood was needed to build houses, ships and furniture. Metal, also for furniture and stones used for jewellery. In exchange for these goods Egypt themselves had a lot of goods that other countries wanted. Things such as grain, papyrus and bricks were traded.

    GEOGRAPHY
    Physical Size and Borders
Egypt, covering 1,001,449 square kilometers of land, is about the same size as Texas and New Mexico combined. The country's greatest distance from north to south is 1,024 kilometers, and from east to west, 1,240 kilometers. The country is located in northeastern Africa and includes the Sinai Peninsula (also seen as Sinai), which is often considered part of Asia. Egypt's natural boundaries consist of more than 2,900 kilometers of coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Red Sea (see fig. 1 Egypt shares all 1,150 kilometers of the western border with Libya. This border was defined in 1925 under an agreement with Italy, which had colonized Libya. Before and after World War II, the northern border was adjusted, resulting in the return of the village of As Sallum to Egyptian sovereignty. Egypt shares 255 kilometers of its eastern border in Sinai with Israel and 11 kilometers with the Gaza Strip. Egypt is divided into twenty-six governorates (sometimes called provinces), which include four city governorates: Alexandria (Al Iskandariyah), Cairo (Al Qahirah), Port Said (Bur Said) and Suez; the nine governorates of Lower Egypt in the Nile Delta region; the eight governorates of Upper Egypt along the Nile River south from Cairo to Aswan; and the five frontier governorates covering Sinai and the deserts that lie west and east of the Nile. All governorates, except the frontier ones, are in the Nile Delta or along the Nile Valley and Suez Canal.

J ust as life arose from the waters of the primeval sea, so the waters of the Nile gave birth to the pharaonic kingdom. A gift to the people of Egypt, the longest river in the world flows north from the heart of Africa to the Mediterranean Sea. Its flood plain was an extensive oasis, a magnet for life human, plant and animal. Humans were drawn there because they could grow crops and settle into permanent villages. The annual flooding of the Nile deposited nutrient rich silt on the land, creating all the ingredients needed to support life and the growth of a great civilization. B ounded on the south, east and west by a impenetrable desert, and on the north by the sea, ancient Egypt was protected from outside influences, which allowed it to evolve in its own unique way.
