The Library makes this record accessible through research, museum exhibits, public programs, and educational outreach. The Eisenhower Library is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Eisenhower Presidential Center in Abilene, Kansas commemorates the spirit of the Allied Expeditionary Forces of World War II, as well as the administration of the 34th President of the United States. The Eisenhower family home is at the center of the complex. This simple frame structure is typical of the late 19th century Kansas family dwellings. The Museum, built of native limestone, depicts President Eisenhower's life and career from his early childhood through his two terms in office as Chief Executive. Five major galleries include exhibits ranging from presidential gifts from the world's heads of state to highlights of Mamie Eisenhower as First Lady to the simple artifacts of everyday life. The Place of Meditation is the final resting place of the President, his wife and their first-born son, Doud Dwight Eisenhower.

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. American and coalition forces are steadily advancing against the regime of Saddam Hussein. With each new village they liberate, our forces are learning more about the atrocities of that regime, and the deep fear the dictator has instilled in the Iraqi people. Yet no crime of this dying regime will divert us from our mission. We will not stop until Iraq is free.

Dwight D. Eisenhower: Atoms for Peace
United Nations General Assembly, December 8, 1953

Madame President, Members of the General Assembly:-When Secretary General Hammarskjold's invitation to address this General Assembly reached me in Bermuda, I was just beginning a series of conferences with the Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of Great Britain and of France. Our subject was some of the problems that beset our world. During the remainder of the Bermuda Conference, I had constantly in mind that ahead of me lay a great honor. That honor is mine today as I stand here, privileged to address the General Assembly of the United Nations. At the same time that I appreciate the distinction of addressing you, I have a sense of exhilaration as I look upon this assembly. Never before in history has so much hope for so many people been gathered together in a single organization. Your deliberations and decisions during these somber years have already realized part of those hopes.

    http://www.who2.com/dwightdeisenhower.html
DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER U.S. President and Five-Star General Eisenhower was the most famous U.S. Army general of World War II. A career Army man, he rose to the level of 5-star general and oversaw the Allied forces in Europe, including the famous D-Day invasion of France in 1944. After the war he served briefly as president of Columbia University, then was chosen over Robert A. Taft as the Republican candidate for U.S. president in 1952. He won handily in 1952 and again in 1956, defeating Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson both times. Ike survived a half-dozen heart attacks over 15 years before succumbing in 1969.
Extra credit : Eisenhower was succeeded by John F. Kennedy , who defeated Eisenhower's vice president, Richard Nixon , in the elections of 1960... Eisenhower was a four-pack-a-day smoker until he quit cold turkey in 1949.

Dwight D. Eisenhower DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER, 1890-1969), American general and 34th president of the United States. He was the principal architect of the successful Allied invasion of Europe during WORLD WAR II and of the subsequent defeat of Nazi Germany. As president, Eisenhower ended the Korean War, but his two terms (1953-1961) produced few legislative landmarks or dramatic initiatives in foreign policy. His presidency is remembered as a period of relative calm in the United States. Eisenhower spent his first 50 years in almost total obscurity. A professional soldier, he was not even particularly well known within the U.S. Army. His rise to fame during World War II was meteoric: a lieutenant colonel in 1941, he was a five-star general in 1945. As supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, he commanded the most powerful force ever assembled under one man. He is one of the few generals ever to command major naval forces; he directed the world's greatest air force; he is the only man ever to command successfully an integrated, multinational alliance of ground, sea, and air forces. He led the assault on the French coast at Normandy, on June 6, 1944, and held together the Allied units through the European campaign that followed, concentrating everyone's attention on a single objective: the defeat of Nazi Germany, completed on May 8, 1945. In 1950, President Harry

"The way chosen by the United States was plainly marked by a few clear precepts, which govern its conduct in world affairs. First: no people on earth can be held, as a people, to be an enemy, for all humanity shares the common hunger for peace and fellowship and justice. Second: no nation's security and well-being can be lastingly achieved in isolation but only in effective cooperation with fellow-nations. Third: any nation's right to a form of government and an economic system of its own choosing is inalienable. Fourth: any nation's attempt to dictate other nations their form of government is indefensible. And fifth: a nation's hope of lasting peace cannot be firmly based upon any race in armaments but rather upon just relations and honest understanding with all other nations.

His family moved to Abilene, Kansas, where he worked for a time in a creamery until he took and passed exams for the Military Academy and was appointed to West Point. There, he picked up the nickname "Ike" and changed his first and middle names. An average student, he ranked 61st in his class of 168 and graduated in l9l9 to become a career soldier. He met Mamie Geneva Doud at his first duty station, and they married on July 1, 1916, on the day he received his promotion to First Lieutenant. They had two sons. One died as a baby, and the other, John Eisenhower followed his father's footsteps as a career officer in the U. S. Army. After several routine assignments, he graduated at the top of his class at the Army General Staff School in Leavenworth, Kansas, and was sent to Army War College in Washington D.C. From there, in l932, he was appointed aide to General Douglas Macarthur and spent four years with him training and building the Philippine army. There, he learned to fly while training the Philippine Air Force. Eisenhower was the second graduate of West Point to be President, after Ulysses S. Grant, and the the sixth general elected President.
