The United States faced several significant domestic and international problems in the 1950s. The population and politicians held conflicting opinions on these issues. For this lesson, you will need: Access to reference materials about the United States during the Eisenhower years Clarify for students that in role-playing they will not work with scripts per se but that they will have to plan within their groups (see below) before attempting to role-play for three to five minutes in front of others. contention

Address by Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America, to the 470th Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly
Tuesday, 8 December 1953, 2:45 p.m.
General Assembly President: Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit (India) Madam President and Members of the General Assembly; When Secretary General Hammarskjold's invitation to address the General Assembly reached me in Bermuda, I was just beginning a series of conferences with the Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of the United Kingdom and France. Our subject was some of the problems that beset our world. During the remainder of the Bermuda Conference, I had constantly in mind that ahead of me lay a great honour. That honour is mine today as I stand here, privileged to address the General Assembly of the United Nations. At the same time that I appreciate the distinction of addressing you, I have a sense of exhilaration as I look upon this Assembly. Never before in history has so much hope for so many people been gathered together in a single organization. Your deliberations and decisions during these sombre years have already realized part of those hopes. But the great tests and the great accomplishments still lie ahead. And in the confident expectation of those accomplishments, I would use the office which, for the time being, I hold, to assure you that the Government of the United States will remain steadfast in its support of this body. This we shall do in the conviction that you will provide a great share of the wisdom, of the courage and of the faith which can bring to this world lasting peace for all nations, and happiness and well-being for all men.

Eisenhower went to school in Abilene, Kansas, and then worked to help a brother through college. He took the Naval Academy exam, placing first, and the West Point exam, placing second, but entered West Point because he was too old for the Naval Academy. During World War II he served as commander of all U. S. forces in Europe. His Presidency: Eisenhower enforced racial integration of public schools and pushed through programs for the completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway and expansion of the Interstate Highway System. During both his terms he took many measures to protect the world from Communism and was well loved by people at home and abroad.

"The way chosen by the United States was plainly marked by a few clear precepts, which govern its conduct in world affairs. First: no people on earth can be held, as a people, to be an enemy, for all humanity shares the common hunger for peace and fellowship and justice. Second: no nation's security and well-being can be lastingly achieved in isolation but only in effective cooperation with fellow-nations. Third: any nation's right to a form of government and an economic system of its own choosing is inalienable. Fourth: any nation's attempt to dictate other nations their form of government is indefensible. And fifth: a nation's hope of lasting peace cannot be firmly based upon any race in armaments but rather upon just relations and honest understanding with all other nations.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Prior to World War II, Dwight Eisenhower had resigned himself to finishing out a distinguished, but unremarkable military career. By 1943, however, he found himself serving as Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Force, Europe. "Ike" combined a talent for administration with an affable, yet commanding, personality that eventually placed him in positions of great power and responsibility, including leading the Allied invasion of Europe in 1944. Born in Denison, Texas, Eisenhower began his military career as a West Point graduate in 1915, and concluded it as Supreme Commander of NATO in 1952. In between, he served in various military positions and locations until the events of World War II brought him international acclaim. He parlayed his military legend into politics, serving as U.S. president from 1952 to 1960. His battlefield experiences once led him to declare, "I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity."
