Eisenhower was elected to be the new President of the United States, and thereby become the first Republican to hold the top office in 20 years. The retired Army General's Democratic Party opponent, Governor Adlai Stevenson, conceded the election early on November 5, after returns from all parts of America had shown Mr. Eisenhower being swept into the White House by a landslide vote, "Ike", as he was popularly known from the days of his eventful tenure as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe, was to take over from President Truman on January 20, 1953. Dwight D. Eisenhower was almost as well-known to people outside the United States as within his country. President Dwight David Eisenhower Served 1953-1957, 1957-1961 Dwight David Eisenhower was born October 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas, as David Dwight Eisenhower. His family moved to Abilene, Kansas, where he worked for a time in a creamery until he took and passed exams for the Military Academy and was appointed to West Point. There, he picked up the nickname "Ike" and changed his first and middle names. An average student, he ranked 61st in his class of 168 and graduated in l915 to become a career soldier. He met Mamie Geneva Doud at his first duty station, and they married on July 1, 1916, on the day he received his promotion to First Lieutenant. They had two sons. One died as a baby, and the other, John Eisenhower followed his father's footsteps as a career officer in the U. S. Army. After several routine assignments, he graduated at the top of his class at the Army General Staff School in Leavenworth, Kansas, and was sent to Army War College in Washington D.C. From there, in l932, he was appointed aide to General Douglas Macarthur and spent four years with him training and building the Philippine army. There, he learned to fly while training the Philippine Air Force. Eisenhower was the second graduate of West Point to be President, after Ulysses S. Grant, and the the eleventh general elected President.

Eisenhower on the Nuclear Test Ban, February 11, 1960 Preface: After two years of U.S.-British-Soviet negotiations that began on October 31, 1958 on the "Discontinuance of Nuclear Weapons Tests," agreement could not be reached, primarily due to differences concerning on-site inspections. On February 11, 1960, the Eisenhower Administration redoubled its efforts by proposing a phased approach to achieving a comprehensive ban. The proposal was endorsed by British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, and with some further modifications, the proposal was accepted by Soviet Premier Krushchev, making it likely that the test ban treaty could be signed at the Paris summit that both President Eisenhower and Premier Krushchev had agreed to attend in May. However, the shoot-down of an American U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union on May 1st led to an atmosphere of hostility that cut short the Paris summit and the chance for the test ban. He was a special assistant to the assistant secretary of war from 1929-1932. He served as Gen. Douglas MacArthur's senior military assistant in the Philippines from 1935-1939.
