Early Life. top Eisenhower did not see combat duty during World War I, but he was decorated and promoted to lieutenant colonel for his administrative skills in commanding a tank corps training center. In the interwar years, he was recognized as a promising leader at the Command and General Staff school and served as an industrial mobilization planner and as aide to the army chief of staff and later military adviser to the Philippines, Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Eisenhower as President. top Although he had previously rejected numerous overtures from members of both parties to run for the presidency, Eisenhower yielded to the appeal of liberal Republicans in 1952. As a war hero of enormous popularity, he appealed to many Democrats as well, and he handily defeated Adlai Stevenson by more than 6.6 million votes. When he ran again in 1956, the margin was 9.5 million.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Bringing to the Presidency his prestige as commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower obtained a truce in Korea and worked incessantly during his two terms to ease the tensions of the Cold War. He pursued the moderate policies of "Modern Republicanism," pointing out as he left office, "America is today the strongest, most influential, and most productive nation in the world." Born in Texas in 1890, brought up in Abilene, Kansas, Eisenhower was the third of seven sons. He excelled in sports in high school, and received an appointment to West Point. Stationed in Texas as a second lieutenant, he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in 1916. In his early Army career, he excelled in staff assignments, serving under Generals John J. Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, and Walter Krueger. After Pearl Harbor, General George C. Marshall called him to Washington for a war plans assignment. He commanded the Allied Forces landing in North Africa in November 1942; on D-Day, 1944, he was Supreme Commander of the troops invading France.

The farm designated Eisenhower National Historic Site is the only place President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower ever called home. In 1950, the Eisenhowers, looking forward to retirement, purchased the Allen Redding farm adjoining Gettysburg National Military Park. The original 189 acre farm was transformed by stages into the 230 acre country estate of the 34th President of the United States. During his Presidency, President and Mrs. Eisenhower used the farm as a weekend retreat, a refuge in time of illness, and a comfortable meeting place for world leaders. From 1961 to 1969, it was the Eisenhower's home during a vigorous and active retirement. In 1967, President and Mrs. Eisenhower deeded their farm to the United States to be administered by the National Park Service as the Eisenhower National Historic Site. DESIGNATIONS

Dwight David Eisenhower was born in Denison, Tex., on Oct. 14, 1890. His ancestors lived in Germany and emigrated to America, settling in Pennsylvania, early in the 18th century. His father, David, had a general store in Hope, Kans., which failed. After a brief time in Texas, the family moved to Abilene, Kan. After graduating from Abilene High School in 1909, Eisenhower did odd jobs for almost two years. He won an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, but was too old for admittance. Then he received an appointment in 1910 to West Point, from which he graduated as a second lieutenant in 1915. He did not see service in World War I, having been stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Tex. There he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in Denver on July 1, 1916, and by whom he had two sons: Doud Dwight (died in infancy) and John Sheldon Doud.

Craig probes the heated arguments Eisenhower had with his national security advisors, and shows how the president conspired to make the option of war with the Soviet Union impossible.

Biography

PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
was the principal architect of the successful Allied invasion of Europe during World War II and of the subsequent defeat of Nazi Germany. As president, Eisenhower ended the Korean War, but his two terms (1953-1961) produced few legislative landmarks or dramatic initiatives in foreign policy. His presidency is remembered as a period of relative calm in the United States. Eisenhower spent his first 50 years in almost total obscurity. A professional soldier, he was not even particularly well known within the U.S. Army. His rise to fame during World War II was meteoric: a lieutenant colonel in 1941, he was a five-star general in 1945. As supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, he commanded the most powerful force ever assembled under one man. He is one of the few generals ever to command major naval forces; he directed the world's greatest air force; he is the only man ever to command successfully an integrated, multinational alliance of ground, sea, and air forces. He led the assault on the French coast at Normandy, on June 6, 1944, and held together the Allied units through the European campaign that followed, concentrating everyone's attention on a single objective: the defeat of Nazi Germany, completed on May 8, 1945. In 1950, President Harry

Quick Facts The Presidents NBK Contents DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Biography

Before winning election to the PRESIDENCY in 1952, Dwight D. Eisenhower had spent most of his adult life as an army officer, rising to the highest military rank, general of the army. Both as a general and as president, Eisenhower aroused an enormous affection in the people of the United States and indeed in people throughout the world. This was because in a time of national danger, of changing values and uncertainty, he possessed the virtues that most Americans feel represent the United States at its best. He was brave, kind, steadfast, idealistic, friendly, and so completely honest that even his political opponents never questioned his integrity. Early Years Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas, the third son of David and Ida Stover Eisenhower. His ancestors on his father's side had emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania in 1732. The family name meant "iron axe" or "iron hitter." The boy was christened David Dwight Eisenhower. Later his names were accidentally reversed to Dwight David. This was agreeable to him, since he was called Dwight by his family. Eisenhower was 2 years old when the family moved to Abilene, Kansas. Although his father never made more than $1,500 a year, he managed to save enough to buy a small house and a 10-acre (4-hectare) farm. The five Eisenhower boys worked the farm and raised almost all the food for the family. They had virtually no money, but they ate well. The boys went to the local school, where Dwight was nicknamed "Ike."
