Dwight David Eisenhower was born in Denison, Tex., on Oct. 14, 1890. His ancestors lived in Germany and emigrated to America, settling in Pennsylvania, early in the 18th century. His father, David, had a general store in Hope, Kans., which failed. After a brief time in Texas, the family moved to Abilene, Kan. After graduating from Abilene High School in 1909, Eisenhower did odd jobs for almost two years. He won an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, but was too old for admittance. Then he received an appointment in 1910 to West Point, from which he graduated as a second lieutenant in 1915. He did not see service in World War I, having been stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Tex. There he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in Denver on July 1, 1916, and by whom he had two sons: Doud Dwight (died in infancy) and John Sheldon Doud. Eisenhower served in the Philippines from 1935 to 1939 with Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Afterward, Gen. George C. Dweight D. Eisenhower Elected: The Early Years Dwight Eisenhower was born in Dennison, Texas. He grew up in a poor family. He was educated in local public schools, and graduated from Abilene High School in 1909. Eisenhower was interested in attending the Naval Academy, but was told that he was too old (he had just passed his 20th birthday) and was ineligible. Instead, he went the US Military Academy at West Point. He was an average student, graduating 64th out of 164 students. Upon his graduation, Eisenhower was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served throughout the war within the United States borders, rising to the temporary rank of lieutenant colonel. Between the World Wars, Eisenhower held various assignments, rising to the rank of Brigadier General in September, 1941. Soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff for war plans. He then became Chief of the General Staff - Operations Division. In June 1942, he was appointed Commander of US Forces in Europe. In that capacity, he led the US invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and then, finally, the US invasion of Normandy. Upon his return to the US in November 1945, he was named Army Chief of Staff. He resigned from the Army in 1948. From 1948 until 1950, he was President of Columbia University. From 1951 until 1953 he served as the first Commander of NATO.

During World War I, Eisenhower (nicknamed "Ike" as a boy) served at several military training camps, establishing himself as a first-rate organizer and trainer of men. He spent two years as executive officer to Gen. Fox Conner, military commander at Camp Gaillard in the Panama Canal Zone. With Conner's help, Eisenhower was admitted to the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1926, he graduated first in his class of 275, going on to attend the Army War College in Washington, D.C. He advanced in his career, holding various posts, including aide to General Douglas MacArthur, then Chief of Staff of the United States Army. When the United States entered World War II after Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower became one of the Allies' foremost military strategists. As commander of U.S. forces in Europe, he planned the invasions of Northern Africa (1942), Sicily and Italy (1943). Promoted to Allied commander in chief, he directed the Normandy invasion (June 1944) and the brutal year-long campaign through Europe which led to the German surrender. In December, 1944, the Army made him a five-star general, its highest rank. Dwight D.
