Black Friday 2001 -It would make sense to have some kind of massive community service effort taking place during the week of action. We should take advantage of having so many people there, so that we're helping the local communities instead of being a strain on them. I'm thinking things like cooking for local soup kitchens, donating sleeping materials once we're done with them, food and medical supply drives, cleanup crews to pick up garbage (protests produce a lot of paper waste, not to mention food waste), the possibilities are endless. Something to consider. It should also help us bring out local communities if they see we're here to help them. ~Robin

... The Latino Vote Every day, in towns and cities across the nation, public broadcasting stations provide content and services that help expand educational opportunities, improve civic discourse, provide access to new technologies and enfranchise local institutions to solve community problems. The public broadcasting system forms the largest community-based educational and civic institution in the nation. Through almost 700 local radio and more than 350 local television stations, public broadcasters ensure that all Americans have access to the highest quality, non-commercial, educational and cultural programming in their homes, schools and workplaces. For millions of viewers and listeners, public broadcasters provide the voice of the morning rush hour, a ticket to the symphony and a seat at a City Hall hearing. That's because our nation's public broadcasters are our neighbors, and their primary mission is service to their communities. Local stations are varied in their purposes, roles and locations depending on the community they serve. Some stations are licensed to community nonprofit organizations; some are college or university stations; some are part of statewide networks. Whatever their chosen role, the most important potential of the stations was first noted by the Carnegie Commission:

History Gets a New World View And a new advanced placement exam will reflect this environmental world view starting next year. H istory "traditionally has been seen through the eyes of the military and political elite," says Deborah Smith Johnston, an NEA member who trains teachers in the emerging field of environmental world history. "But now we're bringing in social history and biological and ecological views of world history. And it's not just about acid rain." New approaches to world history, notes Johnston, who teaches advanced placement history and geography at Lexington High School in Massachusetts, have been making headlines since national standards were released in 1994. "World history is no longer the story of Western civilization," she says, "or an 'us and them' kind of thing." Instead, explains Johnston, world history today is increasingly looking at big themes, patterns of how the world operates across time and space. An environmental perspective on world history, Johnston notes, helps students establish connections between, for example, the domestication of animals and plants and agricultural pollution.

Election 2000! "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” —Presidential Oath, U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 Ready or not, Election 2000 is here and the political roller coaster by which we elect our nation's highest officeholder has begun. Its time again for the endless promises, accusations, news bytes, hype and spin. If educated adults find presidential elections puzzling and frustrating, imagine how crazy they must appear to children! In fact, a recent "unofficial poll" of a bright 5th grader in the Education Planet neighborhood revealed this inevitable confusion. First we asked, "What is an election"? The answer we got was, "It is when people give their opinions on who should be president or get some very important job". Not bad! However, we then asked, "What is the Electoral College?" The answer was, "I think that's a school where they teach people who want to be president how to make good choices." Don't we wish that were true! But then, how many educated adults can explain the role and workings of the electoral college?

We meet to nominate a candidate and pass a platform at a moment of measureless national opportunity. A new century beckons, and Americans are more than equal to its challenges. But there is a problem. The Clinton administration has proven unequal to the heritage of our past, the promise of our times, and the character of the American people. They require more and demand better. With them, we raise our voices and raise our sights. We are the heirs of world leadership that was earned by bravery and sacrifice on half a thousand battlefields.

Teach-in Focuses on Finance Reform
Christine Papio Challenge the system. Profs. Theodore Lowi and Richard Baer discuss issues at yesterday’s teach-in with Dr. Joan Mandle, executive director of Democracy Matters.
By COURTNEY POTTS
Around 75 students gathered in Uris Auditorium for yesterday's Teach-In held by Democracy Matters. The event, entitled "Is our Democracy Accountable to the People?," dealt mainly with the issue of campaign finance reform. It featured short talks by four panelists followed by questions from the audience.
The four panelists included Dr. Joan Mandle, executive director of Democracy Matters; Prof. Richard Baer, natural resources; Prof. Walter Mebane, government; and Prof. Theodore Lowi, the John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions. Each spoke for roughly seven minutes.
Lowi began the discussion by asking exactly who "the people" were. He mentioned three forces of accountability: "mass power," "group power," and "power by numbers." These represent popular opinion, special interest groups and actual electorates. The problem of accountability arises from conflicts between these groups. "We want [the politicians] accountable, and we think they ought to be accountable to people who help get them elected, but that conflicts with their accountability to their district," Lowi said. His position was that the main problems were campaign contributions from sources outside of the represented area, districts that were too diverse to be easily represented as a group, and party politics.

January 11, 2000 AMERICAN BAPTISTS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN ELECTION 2000
"Participation in the political process that elects the leadership of a world power is an opportunity for ministry that touches many lives, in our neighborhoods and beyond," according to Curtis Ramsey-Lucas, director of Legislative Advocacy for National Ministries of American Baptist Churches USA. "And the first election of the new century is unlike any other in recent history. This November, in addition to electing state and local officials, we will elect a president, a vice president, one-third of the U.S. Senate and all of the House of Representatives."
Churches can be an important force in educating the public and challenging candidates to consider how they will serve the cause of justice, says Ramsey-Lucas, who staffs National Ministries' Office of Governmental Relations in Washington, D.C. Because of the significant opportunity of this election year National Ministries has made American
Baptist involvement in the election the study and action focus of its Faith in Action network for the year 2000. Resource materials for the election, which will be made available to churches throughout the year, include a Bible study entitled "Does the Bible Tell Me How to Vote?," guidelines for church involvement in voter education activities and other events, and worship resources related to citizen involvement in the political process. Initially participating churches will receive a calendar of events for planning purposes.

INTRODUCTION
In 1996, America will choose the President who will lead us from the millennium which saw the birth of our nation, and into a future that has all the potential to be even greater than our magnificent past. Today's Democratic Party is ready for that future. Our vision is simple. We want an America that gives all Americans the chance to live out their dreams and achieve their God-given potential. We want an America that is still the world's strongest force for peace and freedom. And we want an America that is coming together around our enduring values, instead of drifting apart. Today's Democratic Party is determined to renew America's most basic bargain: Opportunity to every American, and responsibility from every American. And today's Democratic Party is determined to reawaken the great sense of American community.

Think about a few decisions you were faced with this past week. How did you make your decisions? Did you think about the advantages and disadvantages? Did you listen to the advice of a friend? Did you fail to take any action? Making decisions is a big responsibility in our lives. It requires us to be thinkers, learners, and doers. Sometimes we have to make decisions with other people. Can you describe a decision you made recently with others? How did you make the decision? Quite possibly you voted to make the decision as part of a group. Soon You’ll Be Voting At The Polls The th Amendment to our Constitution lowers the voting age from twenty-one to eighteen. Depending how old you are, eighteen may seem a world away. But do the math-how many presidential elections will we have before you are eligible to vote? One, two,…maybe three at the most! Voting gives United States citizens a voice in our democracy. It is an extremely important responsibility. Your decision-making now affects friends and family, but soon your decisions as a voter will influence even more people. Maybe your vote will help decide if your area needs new roads or who the next president should be. Hopefully, all citizens of the United States will follow the upcoming election. Whether you are eligible to vote or not, now is the time to learn to use your vote wisely.
