Environmental Education Camps: Fifty Years and Going Strong
A DEC institution that has touched the lives of thousands celebrates its golden anniversary this summer. Fifty years ago, the DEC Environmental Education Camp program opened its doors with one camp in Tompkins County. Today, there are three: Camp DeBruce near Livingston Manor in Sullivan County, Camp Colby near Saranac Lake in Franklin County and Camp Rushford near Canadea in Allegany County. Camps are open for eight one-week sessions each summer to state residents between the ages of 12 and 17. Campers learn about conservation and can earn a Hunter Safety Certificate while enjoying some of the best outdoor recreation New York State has to offer. The greatest value of the camps, however, may be the positive impressions they leave with campers. Kathy McCue, an environmental engineer at DEC, traces her career path back to Camp Colby in 1977. "Besides all the fun things we did, camp inspired me to pursue a career related to the environment," says Kathy. "The instructors helped me realize that taking care of the environment was something important, fulfilling and worth devoting your life to. Years later, when I got a chance to join DEC, I knew that this is where I was supposed to be."

1998 EVCO Electrathon - Official Web Page The 1998 EVCO Electrathon, where high school teams will match their design and construction skills and months of effort against teams from other schools where it counts - on the track! The objective of the Electrathon contest is to travel as far as possible in one-hour in a single-seater vehicle using only the energy available from approximately 30 kilograms of lead-acid batteries. The vehicles must comply with a set of rules (e.g. 3 or more wheels, safety devices). Creativity in the design and construction of the vehicles is encouraged. The Electrathon cars are much like the solar cars that take part of international competitions, except that they do not have the (expensive) solar panels, allowing them to be constructed on limited budgets. Like larger on-road electric cars, the Electrathon cars produce no air pollution in operation, and can be virtually silent. After an introductory review of the elements of the system, workshop participants actually perform the system construction under supervision. Workshops offered: Electrathon Competition Engineering; Electric Vehicle Conversions; Basic Home Power Systems; and Water Pumping With Solar Electric.
