General Manager Greg Vorster said the NEVs are meant for residents who signed up for a General Motors-sponsored program to loan out the zero-pollution vehicles free of charge for a year. But nobody at GM or Pathway Research, which is administering the program, told the residents or the RMA the vehicles were going to be delivered. This was news to the RMA staff. They contacted Pathway Research and told Pathway personnel the association would not assume responsibility for the NEVs. A Pathway representative was expected to notify the recipients to pick up their vehicles later in the day. By evening, the two dozen Pathway NEVs were still huddled in a corner of the RMA lot.

Join Now! March 7, 2002 Interest in hybrid gas-electric vehicles growing - J.D. Power and Associates
Agoura Hills, California - A recent survey by U.S. automotive research firm J.D. Power and Associates reveals that 30 percent of new-vehicle buyers indicate they would "definitely" consider a hybrid electric vehicle and another 30 percent indicate a strong consideration. Interest in hybrid vehicle technology is especially strong among women, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Hybrid Vehicle Consumer Acceptance Study. The study provides answers to three core industry questions about hybrid vehicles: 1) In which vehicle segments do consumers want hybrids offered; 2) What will cause them to purchase; and 3) How much are they willing to pay? Survey respondents overwhelmingly indicate that they want a hybrid powertrain option in the same segment as their current vehicle. For example, a hybrid SUV is the most popular first choice vehicle segment for a hybrid option among current SUV owners, while a minivan hybrid is the first choice among minivan owners. However, regardless of the vehicle they currently own, nearly all consumers surveyed select a midsize car as their second most popular choice for a hybrid.

New Jersey's Project:PowerCommute
The New Jersey Department of Transportation and NJ TRANSIT Project:PowerCommute will enlist companies to lease electric vehicles (EVs) for at least two of their employees to drive from the train station to work. Key to the program is increased rail ridership. Thus employees who normally drive to work will be asked to start using transit instead. Inbound or reverse commuting employees will use the train and station cars instead of their personal vehicles. After the station-to-workplace commute has been established, employers will assign each EV to a local employee. That person will drive the EV from home to the station, pick up fellow employees, and carpool to work. Charging facilities will be placed at the work location to increase range and make EVs available for transportation to meetings and for errands during the day.
Five retrofitted 1997 Geo Metros charging at the Morristown station.
Solectria did the retrofits and calls each a "Force." PowerCommute vehicles will also be leased to the public. Commuters who apply and agree to ride the train to work will be leased an electric vehicle to drive from home to the train station. Special parking spots with charging stations will be reserved for the cars at the station. If an EV commuter carpools to the station, they will receive free parking. Home charging systems will be installed to demonstrate the viability of personal EV use.

GM is giving away electric carts (for a year) to meet California clean-air requirements
Published Monday, August 19, 2002 The Pathway, as the vehicle is called, has a top speed of 21 mph. It also has head, tail, brake and back-up lights as well as turn signals, windshield wipers and seat belts. Since it's meant for short-hop community trips, and not golf courses, the Pathway is not set up to carry golf bags. California had planned to force automakers to put as many as 100,000 electric cars and other low-pollution vehicles on the road each year, starting with the 2003 model year. GM went to court and delayed that order. Even though GM says it is confident that the zero-emission requirements will be delayed years at least, the company wants to book credits for distribution of the vehicles as early as possible in case the standards go into effect, according to company officials who gathered last week in Santa Barbara. "Every one you sell, you're going to have to sell at a loss," Larry Burns, GM vice president of research, development and planning, told Reuters news agency. The goal is to "sell as many as you possibly can in three years and pocket the credits, because they're not going to go away. California is never going to stop their pursuit of zero emission vehicles."

... Universities Jamming in the Park Friday, June 1, 2001 Jammin' in the Park 2001 was the celebration of the Park companies pulling together to increase the awareness of alternative ways to commute to work and to hear the results of these efforts. Park companies that participated in the 2001 survey, representing 37,296 employees, have 27% of the people using some kind of TDM method to travel to work. This number includes non-peak travel and four-day work weeks. The Golden Hubcap Awards focused just on carpooling, vanpooling, riding the bus, biking, walking and telecommuting. Just looking at these methods of travel, the Park companies have improved from 5% employees using one of these modes of transportation last year to 9% using one of these methods this year on a regular basis. Mark Roberts, the traffic reporter extraordinare from WRAL-TV, interviews one of the vendors at Jammin in the Park.
