Designed by: Priscilla McPheeters, Caughman Road Elementary Grade Level: Fourth Subject: Science Core Curriculum Objective: Demonstrate and distinguish between static and current electricity. (IV-B1-b) Overview: Students will plan and conduct a simple investigation to demonstrate and distinguish between static and current electricity. Students will work with a partner to formulate their own questions about static and current electricity. The partners will select and use the appropriate equipment and tools to gather their data and demonstrate the differences between static and current electricity. The partners will use the data they collect to construct an explanation that distinguishes between static and current electricity. The partners will communicate their findings to their peers. Focus Question: How can we demonstrate static and current electricity? How can we show the difference between static and current electricity?

SAFETY
Wear safety glasses throughout this activity. The devices used in this experiment to power the gas- filled tubes use a very high voltage of electricity. Do not remove the gas-filled tubes or insert metal objects such as pens or paper clips into the power devices. The gas-filled tubes will be very hot to the touch, so be careful to not touch the surfaces.
INTRODUCTION
Atomic spectroscopy is an extremely important tool for scientists. Because the electron patterns around every kind of atom are unique, and because these electrons interact with light in different ways because of their different positions, you can determine what kinds of atoms are present in a substance by the kind of light absorbed or emitted by the substance. Every atom has a kind of "fingerprint" in the normal light spectrum that is measured with a device called a Spectrometer. This instrument uses a diffraction grating as a prism, splitting the incoming light into its composite colors. As an example, a marine ecologist may suspect that the reason many bottom-dwelling organisms are dying in a local harbor is because of a chemical pollutant. She samples the mud and chemically extracts a type of metal ion, but sheÕs not sure what kind of metal it is. She injects the metal ions into the hot flame of an atomic emission spectrometer and observes two line spectra. The lines correspond to the wavelengths of 563 nanometers (nm) and 615 nm. This combination is the "fingerprint" for tin. The ecologist may then trace the tin to a particular type of ship's paint or a nearby industrial source.

Lesson Plans Science General Cheap-O Electricity Unit Cheap-O Electricity Unit:
If you are finding it difficult to gather enough small light bulbs to teach a unit on electricity, now is the time to put out the word to parents and friends. As Christmas approaches many people will discover that their old strings of mini lights don't work and it is cheaper to toss them than to find the one bulb that is burned out. Ask them to give you the old strings of lights. Using scissors or wire cutters simply snip the wire half way between each bulb. You will soon have 60 to over a 100 lights with 2 inch leads. These bulbs easily light with a D cell and don't burn out if students join several batteries in series. Be sure that you discard the plug ends where students won't find them. A loose plug is very tempting to plug into the wall and it could be deadly.

Activity 1: Power to the people
The purpose of this activity is to give students the opportunity to
    • think about eco-targets monitor electricity use practise ecological sustainability at home and/or at school
    Length and implementation of activity
Part 1 and the setting up of Part 2A can be done in approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Allow one week for students to complete their meter readings. These readings are best done outside of class time, so during class time you could discuss topics such as electricity generation and alternative forms of energy. The analysis of the meter readings in Part 2A and Part 2B can be done in approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Information relating to tariffs and wattage of lights and appliances can be obtained from your local electricity authority (try their web site) or, as a homework activity, students could check out wattages at stores that sell lights and appliances and complete the Table Showing Comparison the night before. (Note that the figures used for the calculations of coal burnt and CO2 emissions are based on figures available at the time and may not be entirely accurate.)
The optional role play could take 15 to 20 minutes to set up, then students must be allowed time outside of class to prepare their roles/questions. The actual role-play itself could take 30 to 40 minutes or more.
