Purpose
To discuss how electricity causes air pollution.
Grade level
Second Grade
Essential Elements
Classify, order, and sequence data. The student shall be given opportunities to: (B) classify matter and forces, organisms, actions, and events from the environment according to similarities and differences.
Objective
To understand why saving energy helps stop air pollution.
Focus
Walk over and turn the lights off, then tell the class that you are helping to stop air pollution. Then tell the class that since we need the lights right now, you will turn them back on.
Materials
None
Background
Most of our electricity is produced in steam turbines. A power source, such as coal, gas, or oil, heats water in a boiler to produce hot, high-pressure steam. This steam expands against the blades of a turbine. A turbine is a device that spins when air or water is forced against it. You can think of it as a kind of enclosed windmill. The hot, expanding steam forces the turbine to spin. The spinning turbine then operates a generator that produces electricity.
Procedure
Tell the class you are going to tell a story about a wise old owl and his young pupil. Warn them that the story ends with a question that you will hope they will be able to answer.

Follow the links and learn about Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering! Each lesson contains hands-on or interactive activities as well as explanations of the science and engineering. Chemical - Chromatography - 6 Pages Chromatography is used by crime laboratories to identify clues such as blood, ink, or other substances found at a crime scene. Chromatograms of these clues are compared against chromatograms of known substances for identification. In this experiment you get to be the detective! Can you identify the 12 color colored markers?
Chemical - T-Shirt Chromatography - 3 Pages Chromatography is a technique used to separate mixtures. In this activity you will create your own colorful T-shirt design while learning about chromatography. You will separate the ink from permanent colored markers to make a rainbow of colors on your T-shirt!
Chemical - Funny Putty - 4 Pages Matter exists in three states: solid, liquid, and gas, but sometimes a substance does not seem to fit in any of these categories. Is clay or putty a solid or a liquid? Clay and putty are colloids. Colloids are mixtures of a substance suspended in another substance. In this fun activity, you will make putty and investigate its behavior!
Chemical/Civil - Oxidation and Corrosion - 4 Pages When exposed to moist air different metals may lose their shine and become dull or start to corrode. In this experiment you'll learn to identify different metals and types of corrosion and restore a metal's bright shiny finish.
