FROM THE WALL SOCKET The Socket
    The wall socket is connected to the mains supply of electricity. Appliances plugged into a socket are provided with electrical energy.
Energy
    Electrical appliances are energy converters. They change the energy supplied from the mains into other desirable forms of energy. The main types of energy produced by appliances are:
  • Heat
  • Light
  • Movement
  • Sound
Power
  • The higher the power rating of an appliance the more electrical energy it uses in a given time. Electrical appliances in the home have power ratings from as low as a few watts (shaver) to as high as 12 000 watts (cooker). Suggest typical power ratings for each of the appliances illustrated on the left.
The Flex
    Flexible cords (flexes) connect appliances to the mains via a plug. The current from the mains to each appliance depends on the power rating of the appliance. Appliances with large power ratings require a thick connecting flex to be able to carry the large currents. If too thin a flex is used it can overheat and produce a fire hazard. The data table can be used to help select a flex.

The frog's leg experiments carried out by Luigi Galvani (1786) initiated detailed investigation into the phenomena of current electricity. In 1820 Christian Oersted discovered the magnetic field of electric current. By accurate measurement, Georg Simon Ohm found the basic relationships between voltage, current and resistance. The discovery made by Michael Faraday of the fact that the movement of a magnet relative to a conducting circuit produces an electric current (law of induction, 1831) revealed another link between electric and magnetic processes. James Clerk Maxwell summarized the concepts of his time and widened them; the result was an admirable theoretical system of electrodynamics (after 1856) that comprised electric and magnetic phenomena.
