In Vivo Electrochemistry (IVEC)
In vivo electrochemistry relies on the fact that certain compounds can undergo oxidation (electron loss) or reduction (electron gain) reactions at a given applied potential. During such a reaction, the number of molecules of a substance is directly related to the number of electrons detected. Moreover, these reactions can be reliably detected on millisecond time scales, and on small surfaces. In our laboratory, we take advantage of the principles of electrochemistry in order to detect a variety of electroactive compounds in the brain. The IVEC ( I n V ivo E lectro C hemistry) system, developed at the CenSeT Measurements are carried out on carbon fiber sensors

Electro-smog and Chemistry No human being has yet lived his/her entire life surrounded by computers and mobile telephones...
Based on bioelectrochemistry, life on earth developed over millions of years. Gradually replacing most alternative energy sources, artificial electricity is only about 120 years old. New applications are continuously found and now there are no electro-smog-free areas on the earth. Radiation from radar, antennae, satellites and radioactivity reaches everywhere. Electric equipment disturbs other electric equipment, and much money is invested to protect machines from each other. Are we less sensitive than machines or will electromagnetic overload damage our tissues as it does electronic equipment? Can technology itself solve the problems it has created, or will we have to change our life styles or perish? Alternating currents Varying in strength with climate and localization, electric and magnetic fields are naturally present. During a thunderstorm, for example, very strong electric fields are created and in times of sun-spot activity, increased magnetic fields have been measured. The earth is a large magnet with a positive (north) and a negative (south) pole, making it possible for birds to orientate. Alternating current, quickly changing direction, is used in the public network. Natural alternating fields are rare and usually weak. When the first public electric network was introduced in New York in 1882, it was based on direct current (12V) which resembles natural electricity. Direct current is still used in specific applications.

The Advanced Materials Group (M3EM) engages in research in to the application of electro-chemical techniques to the modification of material surfaces. The key theme of this research is electro-deposition of thin film materials for corrosion protection applications. Example projects include:
  • In-situ Observations of Film Formation and Breakdown in Electrochemical Processes - Utilising Scanning Force and Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy to study nucleation and growth of electrodeposits in-situ and show the influence of various parameters on the orientation and source of defect structures that can lead to breakdown in corrosion environments.
Corrosion Behaviour of Electroless Nickel Coatings - Methods of improving the corrosion resistance of Nickel 20% phosphorus alloys are being studied by controlling the nucleation and growth of electroless depositions to minimise the defect structure and internal stress.

in favour of the 'Identity of Electricities.' His paper upon this subject was read before the Royal Society on January 10 and 17, 1833. After he had proved to his own satisfaction the identity of electricities, he tried to compare them quantitatively together. The terms quantity and intensity, which Faraday constantly used, need a word of explanation here. He might charge a single Leyden jar by twenty turns of his machine, or he might charge a battery of ten jars by the same number of turns. The quantity in both cases would be sensibly the same, but the intensity In his subsequent researches 'On the absolute Quantity of Electricity associated with the Particles or Atoms of matter,' he endeavours to give an idea of the amount of electrical force involved in the decomposition of a single grain of water. He is almost afraid to mention it, for he estimates it at 800,000 discharges of his large Leyden battery. This, if concentrated in a single discharge, would be equal to a very great flash of lightning; while the chemical action of a single grain of water on four grains of zinc would yield electricity equal in quantity to a powerful thunderstorm. Thus his mind rises from the minute to the vast, expanding involuntarily from the smallest laboratory fact till it embraces the largest and grandest natural phenomena. In reality, however, he is at this time only clearing his way, and he continues laboriously to clear it for some time afterwards. He is digging the shaft, guided by that instinct towards the mineral lode which was to him a rod of divination. '

Letter . electrochemistry of Stainless Steel. Can someone help us with the electro-chemistryof this phenomenon ? George C. Malachowski Cytomation Inc.
http://www.finishing.com/105/02.html
Letter #
Electro-chemistry of Stainless Steel Aug 27, 2001 We build small saline filled chambers for biological purposes. It is required to supply a voltage to a stainless steel electrode which is placed in direct contact with the saline. The saline consists of 150 millimoles NaCl and 16 milimoles of Na2HPO4 (Sodium dibasic Phosphate) which acts as a buffer. If a stainless steel electrode and a copper electrode are placed in this solution and a voltage of about 3.5 volts is applied, the cathode (copper) discharges gas, which we assume to be hydrogen. The anode begins to form a light green soluble substance which fits the description of ferrous chloride. However if we instead use 16 millimoles of NaH2PO4 (monobasic)we see a colorless gas (oxygen ?)at the anode and no green substance at all. Can someone help us with the electro-chemistry of this phenomenon ? George C. Malachowski
Cytomation Inc. - Fort Collins, CO, USA. Aug 29, 2001 At the anode you are generating Oxygen and Chlorine and Hydrogen at the cathode. The metals in the Stainless Steel are forming Chloride salts. Nickel Chloride, Ferrous Chloride and Chromic Chloride. If the pH is above 8.0, the Nickel will probably precipitate. In time, you may find deposited Iron on the cathode with traces of Chrome. The deposit will be smutty brown with possibly a slight green tint. If you continue electrolysis, the SS will dissolve completely. The Di Sodium Phosphate used alone should be OK. If you require the Sodium Chloride for some reason, I recommend you use either a Platinum metal anode, or a Platinum clad or Platinum plated Titanium material. Carbon can also be used but will eventually fall apart. Iridium Oxide is the best of all but may be cost prohibitive.

The Third Workshop on
Physical Chemistry of Wet Etching of Silicon (June 4-6, 2002, Nara, Japan)

Sato Laboratory has hosted the 3 rd workshop on Physical Chemistry of Wet Etching of Silicon, which was held on 4-6 June, at Nara Prefecture New Public Hall, in Nara City. The workshop has provided really interdisciplinary discussions among scientists coming from different fields of science, i.e. physics, chemistry, electronics, and micromachining. Total number of attendees were 34, coming from 6 different countries. The program is on our web site. Proceedings are available. Please contact with www-admin@kaz.mech.nagoya-u.ac.jp
We thank the Asahi Glass Foundation and Research Foundation for the Electro-technology of Chubu, for their supports. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM
Scope
Chemical anisotropic etching of single crystals, in particular of silicon, is widely used in fabrication of micron-sized mechanical systems; i.e. MEMS, Micro Systems, and Micromachines. Though this process is already introduced in industries for many practical applications, there is no generally accepted theory on the anisotropic nature of etching, nor explanations on phenomena that are practically headaches for device fabrication. Many groups have been engaged in etching research so far within their scientific territories, and many know-hows are owned within isolated communities without understanding of universal principle behind them. We, the scientific committee members, have recognized the necessity of discussion among scientists from different scientific backgrounds; e.g. electro-chemistry, physics, crystal growth, and micromachining.
