Capture of wild elephants Because of the long years of infancy when elephants are unable to work, it has been the custom to take wild elephants and train them rather than to breed them in captivity. This practice can seriously affect the population of wild elephants especially when the breeding population in the wild is small. India, Vietnam and Myanmar have banned capture of wild elephants but in Myanmar, elephants are still caught each year for the timber industry and illegal wildlife trade. Crude capture methods can also lead to high mortality rate of captured animals.

Elephants in the Wild
Remember that these exercises are just that . . . exercises. They are meant to help you get a better feel for what it means to examine population growth. What do you think is really going on with elephants in the wild? In reality, both African and Indian elephants are declining in the wild. The Indian elephant is considered an endangered species, while the African elephant is listed as threatened. What does this tell you about their population growth rate? ( Answer Interestingly, elephant populations found on wildlife preserves can thrive so well that overpopulation of elephants in the reserves does occur. This means that the elephants' numbers must be thinned so they don't destroy the wildlife preserve meant to protect them. If overpopulation in wildlife preserves occurs what does this tell you about the population growth rate in the preserves? ( Answer And what does this tell you about growth rate outside of wildlife preserves? ( Answer What kinds of mortality factors might be important outside of wildlife preserves? (

In the 19 century Asian elephants were still common over most of their natural range in the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, South-east Asia and Sumatra. But in the present century, expanding human numbers and the destruction of forests have fragmented their population. Today they may number no more than 300,000 - less than tenth as many as the African elephant, whose plight has somehow captured the public imagination to a far greater extent. Breeding has been particularly successful at our parks. The 8 calves born at Howletts are the only calves to be born in the UK and the largest number in Europe. There are currently 16 African elephants and 13 Indian. Home About Us Webcams Conservation ... Others

The Desert Elephants of Mali
The local nomadic pastoralists, - primarily the desert-dwelling Tuareg and the Fulani tribes - have coexisted peacefully with these animals for centuries. The WILD Foundation has joined forces with Save the Elephants (founded and directed by Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Samburu, Kenya) to help protect and sustain this amazing herd of elephant.
For more information on Save the Elephants:
Mali is a beautiful, landlocked desert country in North West Africa. It is remarkable for many reasons, one of which is a herd of 300-400 African elephant that are unique for several reasons: it is the northernmost herd of African elephants; the only such herd in the Sahel (immediately surrounding the Sahara); and it has the longest recorded migration of any elephants. They have lived and prospered peacefully with the Tuareg and Fulani tribes for hundreds of years, but there are increasing signs of strains and impending challenges.

Living with Elephants
The team in Botswana.. After 28 years of working with elephants in captivity in the United States, Doug Grove responded to the irresistible call of the wild - Africa. He has now teamed up with Sandi, a South African zoologist/botanist, and "The Trio," Jabu, Morula and Thembi. Their educational outreach and conservation research through Living With Elephants (LWE) expands the understanding, knowledge and action at the cutting edge of African nature conservation, where wildlife and people meet. A recent associate organization in WILD's network, LWE is in synch with our emphasis of working with wilderness, wildlife and people. We are very pleased to support and work closely with them. WHAT A GUY….JABU JUST KEEPS TOUCHING PEOPLE (in all ways) and changing their ideas, concepts and fears about him and his wild cousins. He is member of “the elephant trio” – with Morula and Thembi – who work with Sandi and me, and of course always steal the show. We have been especially busy the past few years, formalizing our work in north-east Botswana into a non-profit, non-governmental organization with the clear mission of relieving the conflict and competition between the African elephant and human populations.

Review by Gail Hamilton.
Besides everyday life in the family unit, the video shows mating rituals, play fighting (to hone skills for fighting predators and to declare supremacy over other elephants), and the elephants enjoying a mud bath. In play fighting, elephants use their tusks and their agile trunks. With 150,000 muscle units, the versatile trunk is used to caress, smell, dust, mud splash, drink and eat. In her lifelong study of elephants, Poole has discovered that humans can only pick up one-third of elephant vocalization. With sophisticated recording equipment, Poole found that elephants are capable of making 20 low frequency sounds, each of which has its own meaning. Excellent footage, depicting some rarely seen action, will make this video a hit with students. The vocabulary is fairly easy to understand, though teachers might want to preview the video before showing it to determine its suitability for their students. One scene, in particular, talks about Poole's observation of a fluid leaking from the male elephants' genitalia, which Poole thought might have indicated a disease in the herd. In fact, it corresponded with the females' oestrus cycle. Close-up shots of the elephants' genitalia might elicit a few giggles from a young audience.
