Tuli Elephants - Between the Lines
September 22, 2000 A striking feature of the Tuli elephant saga was the media war for the hearts and minds of the public. It was a saga typified by the wealth of misinformation put into the public arena. A chronology of this information trail shows that the misinformation started with the very first piece of writing. Below is a full replication of the memo that was sent to Northern Tuli Game Reserve members in May 1998. In that, it is the first instalment in the ongoing story around the Tuli elephants - 30 young elephants kidnapped from their herd, forced to undergo brutal training, and kept in appalling conditions. As you will see, the Tulis' misadventure is not over; some of the elephants are, in fact, still vulnerable to abuse, even in danger. (In this text you will find that some lines have been highlighted; simply click on the highlighted area to see the truth between the lines - or simply refer to the footnotes below). Thai team struggles to save sick wild elephants
BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) Veterinarians are racing against time to try to save the lives of wild elephants dying from an unknown cause. The team began its relief efforts after two elephants from a herd of about 100 were found dead near a watering hole in a district of Prachuab Khirikhan province, officials said. There were outcries from wildlife conservation groups, whose members suggested that area pineapple growers may have poisoned the elephants in an effort to protect their crops. It was possible that the animals died after drinking poisoned water or being infected by a deadly virus in a southern province. One official leans toward the second theory. "The cause of death is still a mystery. But it is unlikely that they died from poisoned water as earlier suspected, because fish were alive in the watering hole," said district chief Paiboon Chansilp. "The veterinarians believe that the elephants might have been infected by some virus and died," he added. Paiboon said that after several days of trekking, the veterinarians found that a number of elephants were ill and urgently needed help.

Introduction to Choices Wild Conservation Efforts: Choices Wild Limited starts conservation of african wildlife by fostering orphan elephants with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Brief insight into The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's operations with regards to orphan elephants: Amongst other services the trust hand rears and rehabilitates orphan elephant calfs' from the time they are brought into the elephant nursery to the time they are self-sustainable and ready to be put back into the wild. The various orphans are brought in from all around Kenya and East Africa with sad incidents occurring to their parents such as poaching, abandoned, lost or any other possibility. Dr Daphne Sheldrick is a recognized International authority on the rearing of wild creatures and is the first person to have perfected the milk formula and necessary husbandry for both infant milk dependent Elephants and Rhinos. The key to her success has been her life-long experience of wild creatures, an in-depth knowledge of animal psychology, the behavioral characteristics of the different species. After years of trial and error, Dr Daphne Sheldrick succeeded in hand-rearing the very first infant milk dependant orphaned elephant calves - a highly specialised field and something that had never before been accomplished. Since then the trust has hand-reared and rehabilitated back into the wild over 40 elephant calves orphaned in early infancy, having trained a team of specialised elephant handlers.

HANOI, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Two of Vietnam's few remaining wild
elephants died
trying to escape a roundup of a rogue herd blamed for trampling
villagers to
death, Vietnam Television (VTV) reported on Wednesday.
The elephants died in the southern province of Binh Thuan after experts from the Malaysian and Vietnamese forestry departments tried to capture them using tranquiliser darts. The state-run station quoted the head of the Malaysian team as saying one of the tranquilised elephants ran amok when it was awakened by people photographing and filming the scene.

NO SUBSTITUTE FOR FREEDOM
DECEMBER, 1997 Uprooted elephants take a walk on the wild side
Look who's coming to tea By Mukul Sharma reporting from NEW DELHI W isdom, strength and loyalty are among the characteristics that, over the centuries, humans have detected in elephants. The addition of self-destructive and murderous to that list comes as a shock-especially when the roots of the problem may lie in mankind's passionate, fractured efforts to protect these giants C onquered, cornered and alienated, India's wild Asian elephants are becoming restless. Prominent in Hindu lore, national history and rural industry, the elephant has of late become an outsider in its own natural habitat, leaving the jungle and invading human territory where food and space are more available. Today's Asian elephants face a paradox: the closer and more submissive their relationship to man-as a domesticated worker in the tourist industry, for example, or in land clearance and construction-the better chance an animal has to survive. Yet man threatens their survival. In the nation's dwindling forests, logging (oftentimes by the labor of their domesticated cousins), human resettlement and ivory poachers all take their toll of wild elephants. Adding to the pressure is the spread of infrastructure projects on to forest land. Streams flowing from Southern India's Anamalai hills were recently stemmed by the Parambikulam-Aliyar dam of West Bengal. Built for irrigation and power, the dam has caused the death of over 15 wild elephants that were drawn into overflow canals and subsequently swept away.

NEWS PROJECTS EDUCATION GET INVOLVED ... EXTRAS Nina's Story Hi, You know when I was asked if I would like to take part in the Born Free Foundation's translocation of Nina the elephant back to the wild, I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into! As a kid I remembered trips to the zoo to see elephants that would never have the freedom to experience their natural environment. But how could I have known that one day I would actually help take an elephant, that had been in captivity at the Mount Meru Wildlife Sanctuary for over 25 years, back to life in the wild! Her owner, Mr Bandi Schwent Nagy had decided to give her this chance of freedom so long as she was cared for during the relocation and rehabilitation process by a team of top experts including elephant translocation specialist, Clem Coetsee, Tony Fitzjohn of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust, Dr Costa Mlay, Director General of Tanzania's Serengeti Wildlife Research Institute, Will Travers of Born Free and members of the Kenya Wildlife Service. The BBC decided to film this unique event. The first time I met Nina, I felt a very special kind of friendship. I could tell she sensed things were about to happen. I just hoped that in some way she understood.

"But tell me this: did we not, at the beginning our conversation, declare that the elephants display wisdom and intelligence in what they do?" "Why certainly," he replied, "we did say so, Damis; for if intelligence did not govern this animal, neither would it subsist, nor the populations among which it lived." "Why then," said Damis, "do they conduct their passage over the river in a way so stupid and inconvenient to themselves? For as you see, the smallest one is leading the way, and he is followed by a slightly larger one, then comes another still larger than he, and the biggest ones come last of all. But surely they ought to travel in the opposite fashion, and make the biggest ones a wall and rampart in front of themselves." "But,"

NEW YORK — Since the extinction of the mammoths and mastodons some 12,000 years ago, the only animals with trunks and tusks in North America have been those brought here to perform in circuses or to live in zoos.
But two prominent ecologists want that to change. David Burney, a Fordham associate professor of biological sciences, and Paul Martin, who recently retired from the University of Arizona, want to bring a herd of African and Asian elephants to North America to replace their extinct relatives.
In 1999, Burney and Martin published, "Bring Back the Elephants!" in the respected conservation journal Wild Earth. In it, they described their vision of thousands of elephants roaming the grasslands of the West a century or two from now.
Mammoths and mastodons arrived in North America tens of millions of years ago. They even roamed Manhattan, where mastodon bones are often found when the Harlem River Canal is dredged. Their disappearance was part of a wider extinction that wiped out three-quarters of the large mammals in North America.
Burney and Martin, who have both spent their careers studying prehistoric ecosystems, believe that humans caused the animals’ extinction. So, as they see it, humans ought to do what they can to replace the animals with their closest living relative: the elephant.
