grounds, Hardanger, reticella, cutwork, plain embroidery, freehand machine embroidery. outbeyond simple cross stitches or half crosses on canvas.
http://www.heritageshoppe.com/heritage/essays/celebration11.html
The Patterns: 1. A line drawing, the exact size for this design. 2. Charts for any type of counted work. This includes canvas embroidery. The color on the chart is simply there to create visual divisions in the work and should not be construed as the actual hues that should be used. Also included is a symbol chart for those who prefer working in this manner. The Parameters: You are not limited to any size ground. You are not limited to any medium or technique. This includes but is not limited to: ribbon floss, ribbon, any type or size of thread or yarn, beads, applique, wool grounds, Hardanger, reticella, cutwork, plain embroidery, free-hand machine embroidery. You can duplicate any technique already featured. You may use color. However, if you are going to do plain needlepoint or cross stitch, color should not be the sole criteria. If you are not going to try the white-on-white challenge, then do something other than color to make this stand out beyond simple cross stitches or half crosses on canvas. THE CHALLENGE: The original purpose of this "exercise" was to produce a multitude of techniques in white-on-white using the same pattern and approximate size. The size of the line drawing should be kept, within reason, no matter the medium/technique. That might prove difficult on canvas or lower count fabric.

Are you looking for something new? Is there a gift you'd like to stitch, but haven't much time? Are you a little bored with the usual needlepoint stitches? Step into the world of Brazilian-Style Embroidery and stitch your way into what may become an obsession. Once encountered, this wonderful world will be visited again and again! Brazilian Embroidery was developed in Brazil in 1960 by Mrs. Elisa Hirsch Maia (known as Madam Maia). As this lovely lady embroidered her household items and clothing, she became dissatisfied with the available flosses and colors. In experimenting with dyeing the native cellulose, Madam Maia developed a new thread; and a new world of stitchery, which became known as Brazilian Embroidery, was created.

Interpretations of flowers in stitches adorn a summer hat, a shot-velvet stole, and brooches. City images and architecture are the themes used on a window covering, hair clasps, and a cushion. Nautical designs grace a tablecloth, greeting cards, and a wrap. Global and ethnic influences find their way onto all evening bags, a vest, and a cushion. And food motifs brighten a sampler, shelf edging, and a tablecloth.
Techniques with clear instructions, materials, and equipment, including information on transferring motifs and templates from the book to fabric, are treated in separate chapters.
Colour galleries introducing each of the themes used is inspiration for your own designs. There's plenty here to stretch and challenge the skills of novice and experienced embroiderers alike.

Embroidery The art of ornamenting textiles with figured patterns by means of a needle and thread of wool, silk, linen or metal. In the ancient civilizations essential needlework and decorative stitchery devel- oped together, one evolving from the other. Garments needed mending and patching, and from this came ornamental stitching and more complex designs. Needlework was an early art form carried out by all classes of the community. Examples have come from Egyptian tombs and there are references in Hebrew literature, from Indian writings and, later, from the classical world of Homer, Ovid and Virgil. In the thirteenth and fourteenth cen- turies, English embroidery, opus anglicanurn, was the finest in Europe. The quality of the stitchery was so fine that the work was highly sought-after. Figure scenes and pictures of animals, birds and flowers were naturalistic and well-drawn. Silver thread and seed pearls were intro- duced into the embroideries and appliqu6 work was widely used. In the fourteenth century velvet grounds were favoured. EMBROIDERY TERMS AND STITCHE Anglo-Saxon work - an early embroidery where the design is outlined by stitches and filled in with silk couching.
