A.2 How to Find the FAQs
1. Comments
There are many, many styles or techniques for counted thread work and embroidery. Most are centuries old, and have been in and out of fashion more than once. This list is far from complete. Any additions to this list or to the descriptions are welcome.
2. Assisi Work
Assisi Work is a form of embroidery where the background is stitched around an unstitched silouette design, which is outlined in backstitch to further define it. One particularly lovely form employes subtle shading of the background threads to me, it looks like a sunrise backlighting the subject. These designs can be particularly lovely. Contrary to popular opinion, Assisi work is not the opposite of Blackwork. In most Assisi work, the background is worked in a plain filling stitch, normally cross-stitch. The outlining in Assisi work is normally Backstitch rather than double running stitch, because backstitch makes a smoother line. (Note, Assisi work is done using a blunt needle. Double running stitch is best done using a sharp needle so that the second pass of stitches can split the threads of the first path to make a smooth line. Double running stitch done with a blunt needle will have the adjacent stitches not match exactly at the ends, where the threads must pass beside each other at the 'holes'.)

Stitchers' Study Back Threads of History
by Jo Verso (CSG Patron) In Eastern Europe at this time, folk art was flourishing, and cross stitch was used to embellish household items using geometric and floral patterns still found in pattern books to this day. But cross stitch really came into its own with the working of samplers. The earliest printed pattern book was produced in Germany in 1524, but it was many years before pattern books became readily available. So stitchers would record samples In the sixteenth century, the popularity of embroidery in Europe was helped by the invention of printing. Early pattern books offered designs for cross stitch and other forms, such as blackwork. Cross stitch patterns were printed as black squares or dots, leaving the choice of colours to the embroiderer. The stitcher could count the pattern onto the fabric or detach the pattern, prick holes through it and pounce the design through the holes using coloured powder. As pattern books became more readily available in Europe and America during the seventeenth century, the function of samplers changed. They evolved into educational instruments, stitched by children to teach them the needlework skills essential to young girls who would be making and marking household linen and clothing. By stitching alphabets and numbers, children were also taught basic literacy and numeracy. Samplers became a popular way to instil moral virtues, so we frequently find verses of a highly pious tone. One poor little soul was made to stitch:

    Sampler Motifs and Symbolism
    By Hillside Samplings
This is a beautifully done hardcover book that encompasses facinating info and 'trivia' about American and European sampler motifs found on works in the earlier centuries! There are 61 pages of 500 motifs listed alphabetically each with a brief description of it's meanings or history, and charts for 135 of them.
At first, I thought... oh, these charts aren't something that I'd really use sometime... but upon reading through the pages... I couldn't put it down! Did you know that a crab is a symbol of deceipt and cruelty because of the way is was thought to prey on oysters? (I love crab dip... I'd never think anything bad about a crab!) Did you know that each of the 9 digits has specific meanings? And moths... they're frivoulous... they flutter around light, and are associated with the consumption of wealth, because they consume cloth!!! This book has pages and pages of cool things to learn! Following the dictionary, are five sampler charts that are full of those borders and motifs you've just learned so much about. I am really impressed with this book... if you ever want to design a family heirloom, or are simply a sampler-lover... you need this book! 95 Pages.
