Endodontic Anatomy and Diagnosis in the Veterinary Patient Kenneth Lyon United States INTRODUCTION Endodontics may be defined as the branch of dental science concerned with the study of form, function, health, and treatment of the dental pulp and periradicular region. Endodontic treatment includes any procedure designed to maintain the health of all, or part of, the pulp. When the pulp is diseased or injured, treatment is aimed at maintaining or restoring the health of the periradicular tissues, usually by root canal treatment, but occasionally in combination with endodontic surgery. Standard root canal therapy is more clearly described as conventional endodontics. Most modern endodontic treatment involves removal of the irreversibly damaged pulp followed by cleaning and shaping of the root canal space and subsequent filling, or obturation, with a semisolid material and a sealer. Shaping of the canal is done by hand or engine-driven instruments, the latter including sonically and ultrasonically powered files and handpieces with rotating, randomly vibrating, or reciprocating actions. Cleaning is done by irrigating the canal system with one of a number of solutions that may be antibacterial and have tissue-dissolving ability. Obturation is achieved with gutta-percha and a root canal sealer. The cleaning and shaping phase of endodontic treatment is regarded as the most important. When the canal is clean, it is important that microorganisms do not recontaminate the system. Because of the complex anatomy of the root canal system, complete disinfection is almost impossible to achieve. It is important, therefore, that any remaining microorganisms in the dentinal tubules are prevented from multiplying by the use of an antimicrobial dressing followed by three-dimensional filling. Recontamination from the oral cavity must be avoided and the importance of a good coronal seal cannot be overestimated.

There are three major goals of veterinary endodontic therapy that should be sequentially attained for reasonable assurance of success.

About Root Canal Treatment
Nothing is as good as a natural tooth! And sometimes your natural tooth may need root canal (endodontic) treatment for it to remain a healthy part of your mouth. Most patients report that having root canal (endodontic) treatment today is as unremarkable as having a cavity filled. If you've been told you need root canal (endodontic) treatment, you can find the answers to your questions below. You may also find answers to your questions by visiting the AAE Patient Information site. Who performs endodontic treatment?
All dentists, including your general dentist, received some training in endodontics while in dental school. Often general dentists refer patients needing root canal treatment to endodontists. What is an "endodontist"?

http://www.stropko.com/pro/pro_endo.html
Why would I need Endodontic Surgery? Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save teeth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and your endodontist will recommend surgery. Endodontic surgery can be used to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still manifest pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. The most common surgery used to save damaged teeth is an apicoectomy or root-end resection.
What is an Apicoectomy? The diagram at right illustrates this simple procedure. An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root over a period of months restoring full function.
Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort or slight swelling while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. To alleviate any discomfort, an appropriate pain medication will be recommended. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call our office.

What is Endodontic Treatment?
Presented by, Drs. Noghreian, Bemis, and Noghreian South Bay Endodontics Endodontic treatment is commonly known as "root canal". "Endo" is the Greek word for "inside" and "odont" is Greek for "tooth". Endodontic treatment treats the inside of the tooth. To understand endodontic treatment, it helps to know something about the anatomy of the tooth. Inside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue and creates the surrounding hard tissues of the tooth during development. The pulp extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the roots where it connects to the tissues surrounding the root. The pulp is important during a tooth's growth and development. However, once a tooth is fully mature it can survive without the pulp, because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. What Is an Endodontist?

Endodontic News Sample Pain Management Plan A patient, for example, may present at your office reporting severe pain that kept them awake all night. They deny any contraindications to NSAIDs. After examination, you find the patient is suffering from irreversible pulpitis with acute apical periodontitis, and a root canal procedure is initiated. this patient may well experience some post-appointment pain due to continued inflammation of the periapical tissues. A pain management plan would be to give this patient two prescriptions: Rx: ibuprofen 400 mg
Disp: 24 tablets
Sig: take one tablet every 4 hours Rx: acetominophen 300 mg with 30 mg codeine
Disp: 12 tablets
Sig: take two tablets every 4 hours The patient will take the medications as follows: The patient will then repeat this two-hour dosing schedule throughout the first day.
