Project Title: CrossRoads Middle School Energy Savers
Project Adviser: Linda Durstine
Student Directors: Angela Snyder and David Sims
The CrossRoads Middle School community has been working on many energy and environmental issues since the beginning of the school. We started off earning our Earth Flag the first year, and each year we continue to enrich those programs and give birth to new programs. CrossRoads Middle School has over 150 students who are actively involved as Earth Stewards. The Earth Stewards collect and distribute newspaper, fine grade paper, six-pack rings, magazines, catalogs, plastic grocery bags, ink cartridges and cardboard. We have ten students who have been involved with our School Store, where we sell new and recycled school supplies.
This year we are continuing these programs and we gave birth to the Energy Club. The Energy Club has been meeting weekly to plan and prepare for our Earth Day Carnival. We will have four stations, which include Energy Scavenger Hunt, Race Car Energy Quiz Down, Word Scramble, Energy Bowling Game, and Hunt and Find. Mrs. Durstine traveled to Orangeburg, South Carolina, to give a workshop on the various energy activities that are available through the NEED program. Teachers and students were actively involved in the workshop. The word is we need the NEED program in our schools.

PROJECT
The priority aim of this project is to promote an energy analysis methodology shared with pupils of European school buildings.
Receivers of this shared analysis action will be schools, pupils, and Public Bodies whom are the manager of the school sector, and to whom will be addressed a concrete tool for energy intervention on analysed buildings.
Schools represent a strategical sector for the development of the awareness of the youth about the role energy will play in the future, and for the application of pilot projects on efficiency and on energy saving related to a very common building type. All the above for two main aspects:
  • Schools are special public buildings, and thus often managed by Public Administration and they request standard and high level energy comfort performances: as a consequence schools are a very interesting sector among the public buildings typology in Europe;
At present energy related problems find very little space in all the educational programmes, and energy saving thematic, along with renewable energy sources development, for example are dealt just with the 6% of the total training and updating courses, in Italy.

Online Energy Education Resources
These include energy activities that kids can do online and materials to help classroom teachers teach about energy. Energy Education Resources: Kindergarten Through 12th Grade , published by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), is a list of generally available free and low-cost energy-related educational materials. The National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) is a network of students, teachers, community organizations, government agencies, and corporations that are dedicated to learning about energy. NEED is helping EIA maintain the EIA Kid's Site and make it fun and educational for students and teachers alike. DOE's Fossil Energy Web Site provides educational information on topics such as Energy (what it is); Oil and its history; Coal, our most abundant fuel; Natural Gas and its history; and an energy Glossary. Ask an Energy Expert is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and welcomes questions on energy efficient and renewable energy technologies.

Promising Energy Education Practices
Promising Energy Education Practices Introduction
Many teachers would agree that in the field of education, energy is a difficult topic to teach. It's invisible, yet we depend upon it everyday! As teachers prepare their students for life in the 21st century, energy-related environmental, social, and political problems make energy education more important than ever. Global warming, exponential population growth, and dwindling fossil fuels demand that students are conscious of the energy choices they make and the effects of those choices upon the future.
In response to this challenge, some teachers have been working to increase the energy literacy of their students. Yet according to a 1998 study by the Energy Center of Wisconsin, 47 percent of Wisconsin teachers do not teach energy. By providing examples of teacher successes in energy education, it is our hope that others will be inspired to teach about energy.
This book was created to assist "energy educators." K-12 teachers from around Wisconsin volunteered the submissions contained here, which give examples of how to teach about the relevance and importance of energy at every grade level in any subject area. These energy educators have successfully brought energy into their classrooms from food chain dynamics to investigating renewable energy sources to learning how energy use has shaped our past and current environmental, political, and sociological issues. Promising energy education practices range from ten minute motivational activities to year-round projects, and include creative twists and adaptations to already existing activities or projects dealing with energy. These promising practices can be used as springboards for creating even more activities, projects, and lesson plans in energy education.
