Bacteria Make Energy from Light
October, 2000
Sunlight over the Pacific Ocean. Courtesy of NOAA. These bacteria don't photosynthesize in the same way that plants do, but like a couple of other non-plants, they can Escherichia coli, a kind of bacteria that microbiologists often use to test the effects of particular strands of DNA. The newly tailored E. coli pumped out bacteriorhodopsin and when exposed to light, the E. coli began cellular processes that suggested light-harnessing abilities. The researchers say that these two kinds of bacteria may make up nearly 20% of the ocean life near the surface of the sea! The findings could help explain why so many bacteria thrive in the ocean's surface in what seems to be a relatively food-poor environment. Plus, these light-lubbers may bring energy into the ocean food chain that other organisms, in turn, benefit from.

Energy flow in ecosystems You are exploring: Animals and wildlife Essentials Wildlife fact files
Organisms fall into one of three groupsthe photoautotrophs, chemoautotrophs, or heterotrophsbased on the method by which they obtain carbon from their ecosystem.
All organisms share two fundamental requirements to sustain life (1) a source of carbon and (2) a source of energy. By examining both how an organism obtains carbon and how it derives its energy, we can categorize animals as photoautotrophs, chemoautotrophs, or heterotrophs.
Energy source and carbon source
Animals obtain carbon from carbon dioxide or through the consumption of other organisms. Organisms that obtain carbon from carbon dioxide and whose energy source is sunlight are called photoautotrophs. Organisms that obtain carbon from carbon dioxide and whose energy source is derived from inorganic compounds are called chemoautotrophs. Organisms that obtain carbon by consuming other organisms and whose energy source is derived from organic compounds are called heterotrophs. We all need energy to function. We get this energy from the foods we eat. The most efficient way for cells to harvest energy stored in food is through cellular respiration , a catabolic pathway for the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP , a high energy molecule, is expended by working cells. Cellular respiration has three main stages: glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and electron transport. Image credit: Steven Berg Glycolysis Glycolysis literally means "splitting sugars." Glucose, a six carbon sugar, is split into two molecules of a three carbon sugar. In the process, two molecules of ATP and two "high energy" electron carrying molecules are produced. Glycolysis can occur with or without oxygen. In the presence of oxygen, glycolysis is the first stage of cellular respiration. Without oxygen, glycolysis allows cells to make small amounts of ATP. This process is called fermentation The Citric Acid Cycle The Citric Acid Cycle or Krebs Cycle begins after the two molecules of the three carbon sugar produced in glycolysis are converted to a slightly different compound (acetyl CoA). Through a series of intermediate steps, several compounds capable of storing "high energy" electrons are produced along with two ATP molecules. These compounds, known as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), are reduced in the process. These reduced forms carry the "high energy" electrons to the next stage. The Citric Acid Cycle occurs only when oxygen is present but it doesn't use oxygen directly.

An atmosphere driven by heat How the sun energizes our weather Elsewhere on the Web: Browse these links to learn more about the atmosphere: The atmosphere
The weather

Weather fact files

Earth's atmosphere

Our weather is constantly changing. A gentle breeze gives way to an afternoon shower. A thunderstorm brings high winds that twist branches from trees. A tropical storm gains force and becomes a hurricane. These weather events all share a common requirement: energy. Energy reaches earth in the form of radiant heat from the sun. This heat energy is responsible for driving the earth's atmospheric changes and is the ultimate source for all weather processes. Heat and temperature To understand the atmosphere, and in turn the broader subjects of weather and climate, we must begin with a firm grasp of the concepts of heat and temperature. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of motion of the molecules in a substance. When we refer to an object as being hot, we mean it has high temperature. Temperature is more easily measured and defined than heat. Heat is a measure of the total molecular energy of a substance. The heat of an object depends on three characteristics of a substance: its temperature, its mass, and its composition.
