What is a Mechanical Engineer?
Think about what you did today. Did you switch on a light, turn on a tap, flush a toilet, open a door, take an elevator or escalator, travel in a bus, train, plane or car, or use a computer? Every one of these activities was influenced by a mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineers are concerned with the principles of motion, energy and force. Generally, a machine converts one form of movement into another. It is the responsibility of engineers to design machines whose parts and assemblies function in a safe and reliable, efficient and predictable fashion. In the words of one author, the mechanical engineer applies scientific method to the solution of mechanical problems. Indeed, the numerous laws and principles developed by scientists are the everyday tools of the mechanical engineer. Anything the engineer does that is related to the motion and dynamics of heat, gas, air, fluids and solid materials requires the understanding and application of science. Mechanical Engineers Make a Difference... Mechanical engineers contribute to many industries and occupations, encompassing many specialties. Some mechanical engineers work in areas not usually considered to require engineering. Efforts to clean up and preserve the earth's environment have attracted many mechanical engineers to projects involving the treatment of water, soil and waste material. Mechanical engineers also work alongside physicians, therapists and other medical professionals to investigate the workings of the human body and to design aids and instruments for medicine. Other mechanical engineers work closely with trainers, coaches and athletes on the design of sporting equipment.

Introduction
    1. This Report presents the findings of an assessment in March 1997 of the quality of education in electrical and electronic engineering and general engineering provided by the University of Ulster. 2. Ulster Polytechnic and the New University of Ulster (founded 1968) merged in 1984 to form the University of Ulster. The University is one of the largest in the United Kingdom, with some 11,178 full-time students on four campuses. The University was reorganised in 1994: the Faculty of Science and Technology was divided and the Faculties of Engineering and Science were formed. Engineering is taught on three campuses 60 miles apart: Magee, Coleraine and Jordanstown. Provision at Jordanstown and Magee is part of the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering; courses taught at Coleraine, which are currently being relocated to Magee, are part of the School of Biomedical Science within the Faculty of Science. 3. There are 477 full-time equivalent students studying electrical, electronic and general engineering within the Schools of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Science. The teaching group for this area of provision also has a minor teaching input to the mechanical engineering courses. There are 32 full-time teaching staff across the three campuses; some staff teach only on one campus, while others travel to teach and tutor.

IEEE-USA Legislative Action Center Be a Leader — Mentor Young Engineers by Harry T. Roman Do you remember someone who took an interest in you when you began your engineering career? Perhaps a senior member in your department, your first boss, or friends and co-workers you met your first few days on the job? Almost everyone can identify one caring person who mentored and guided them through the rough spots and showed them the ropes. Should you now consider returning the good deed done for you? You may find that being a mentor will make you a better leader. Connecting Work to the Corporate World All engineers need to see the relevance of their work and understand how it influences their company, especially young engineers. Sure, they probably have a good intuitive feel for how engineers influence product design, manufacturing, packaging and perhaps even cost. But few appreciate how their interactions with customers actually influence the marketing and sale of new products and services. Show young engineers the connections between the technical and non-technical aspects of new product development. Help them appreciate the tradeoffs and compromises that need to be made and how customer and societal concerns often overshadow the “technical gee-whiz” of it all.

Ask the Expert: Finding Balance
Natalie Gahrmann is a success coach and owner of N-R-G Coaching Associates , a private coaching company that specializes in helping working parents achieve mastery of work and life. Her clients experience more clarity, direction and alignment while reducing stress in their busy lives.
Finding Time to Do It All
Becky writes, "I am a mother of three: 11 yr old boy, 23 month old girl, 3 week old girl. I have a strong will to conquer the homemaking skill. I am an engineer by education, and work part time in the military doing search and rescue. Both of which are easy compared to full time mama!! I've quit my engineer position and am committed to being a mom and finding a job more cohesive to my choices in putting motherhood's time first. However, I am completely at a loss in the motherhood balance as it is. Help help. Specifically, how on earth does one breastfeed, play with a toddler, teach valuable life skills to an eleven year old, clean the house, cook breakfast lunch, and dinner, shop, and stay physically fit and mentally sharp, oh and lets not forget shave the legs and do the hair all in a days work?" Answer: Although you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed right now, the good news is that with some time, prioritization and organizing your life will seem much easier soon. With a 3-week-old, you and your family are still adapting to the needs a new baby brings.

From The Dean
I
That is the essence of the lead story in this issue of the Michigan Engineer. Through myriad activities such as study/work abroad programs, team projects with an international angle, distance learning courses, global degree programs, and culture-focused curricula, the College is able to deliver a well-rounded education enhanced by a global perspective.
Another way in which we reach out to the international community is through the activities of our faculty. In addition to attending international conferences, the faculty use advancements in information technology to engage in research with peers across an ocean as easily as they do with peers across campus. But face-to-face interaction with international colleagues is also important.
As reported in the last issue of the Engineer

Chapter 2 Current State and Issue of Japan's Science and Technology Section 1@Human Recourses for Science and Technology 1. Education of Science and Engineering at Universities
E The promotion of science and technology is one of the key policy issues to the U.S. and other countries in the world. For the policy of promoting science and technology, education, above all, is considered to be particularly importance. Accordingly, universities and graduate schools are being positively developed in not only Euro-American developed countries but also Asian countries. Reflecting such circumstances, the number of people who have earned doctorate is on the increase in each country (Fig. 9).
E The number of doctors in Japan in 1997 is a little under 30% of the U.S., likewise 60% of Germany, and also less than U.K. and France. Furthermore, China is catching up with Japan.
E For the purpose of enhancing creative mind-set required of the students of universities and graduate schools, it is extremely important to realize education that will teach them basic and practical knowledge and ability and will nurture them to appreciate "the joy of discovery and creation." For that goal, discussions from various angles are under way at present. 2. Fostering and Securing Engineers Who Shoulder Japan's Technological Innovations

ENGINEERING TEACHER SELECTED AS
PIPER PROFESSOR NOMINEE
Elaine Darby was nominated by Angelina College faculty to represent the college as this year's Piper Professor nominee.
The Piper Professor program was established by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation in 1958 to honor the college teaching profession in Texas. Mattie Collins, a retired English instructor at Angelina College, received the honor in 1999.
She incorporates new technology and practices into her classes and connects classroom topics to real world activities through field trips and guest lecturers. Her chemistry classes visit a local wastewater facility and Abitibi paper mill. Her engineering classes tour Lufkin Industries and hear lectures by practicing chemists and engineers.
"I teach to challenge. I teach to encourage. I teach so others can learn about themselves, and somewhere in there, I teach my students math, chemistry and engineering," said Darby.
Her goals as a college instructor include helping her students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. She helps them improve their communication skills and reach a level of self-confidence to prepare themselves to transfer to a four-year institution or for immediate employment.
Many of her students are first-generation college students who need assurance they can compete successfully in their new environment. Darby said, "I have had the opportunity to mentor several students. One has recently completed her engineering degree at Lamar University and become the first member of her family to earn a college degree."
