Vanderbilt science students teach sixth-graders fun of science, school
M ore than 5,000 Metro sixth-graders have been "slimed" at Vanderbilt-all in the name of science.
Most weekdays during the school year two hands-on science lessons are led by Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science as part of the Day on Campus program led by Joan Rice, assistant director of community and university relations. The sixth-graders learn about polymer chemistry and the chemical bonds involved in polymer synthesis not from a textbook, but by locking arms with Vanderbilt students to form human chains and by making "slime."
Plastic cups and popsicle sticks serve as lab equipment. The resulting green "slime," made by mixing colored Borax and polyvinyl alcohol, can be taken home as souvenirs to remind the youngsters that science and school can be fun.
Along with conducting science experiments the Vanderbilt students introduce themselves, their fields of study, campus life and their aspirations to the sixth-graders. These youngsters relate well to the Vanderbilt students, and this has had a positive impact on the Day on Campus program, according to Rice.
"They have electrified the sixth graders, and their involvement in teaching and presenting science has brought a new level of excitement to the program. The word traveling through the sixth grades in Nashville is that doing science at Vanderbilt is really cool."

Adult Basic Education/English as a Second Language (Kendall Square Learning Project - KSLP)
Volunteers teach classes to adults two nights a week at the Volpe Center. Students have come from such countries as Haiti, China, India, Pakistan, and El Salvador. While learning or improving their English, the students are also encouraged to improve basic skills. The goal is to help integrate the students into American society and enable them to get better jobs.

The Kendall Square Learning Project (KSLP) is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides classes in English as a Second Language (ESL) and basic life skills topics. These classes are provided at no cost to the students and are open to anyone. The KSLP is based in Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA and is accessible by MBTA. HISTORY: KSLP was formed in 1992 by sheer determination and the notion that anyone can make a difference. Beginning with one person, KSLP quickly grew from a simple idea into a volunteer program that has reached out to over 300 students.

St. Louis District
Young campers from the Chicago and Springfield, Ill., area recently learned about nature and the great outdoors away from the hustle of the city. Participants in "Operation First Choice" visited Rend Lake in southern Illinois where they teamed up with rangers from St. Louis District and personnel from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to learn outdoor skills in a summer camp atmosphere. Operation First Choice, a program sponsored by the Illinois National Guard, teaches basic life skills by reinforcing physical fitness, team building, conflict resolution, and goal setting through self-assessment. The program has a strong military flavor, and discipline is a major element. Ranger Zoanetti helps campers identify invertibrates ccaught in the seining. (Photo courtesy of St. Louis District) Participants are from 10 to 13 years of age from all walks of life, some from broken homes and some ordered by the courts to attend the program. One common thread bound them together a need for some type of intervention, for someone to take extra time to develop the discipline and self-esteem they need to handle some of the conflicts they face.
