    Overview
Civil Engineering is concerned with the planning, design and construction of systems of facilities related to the needs of society. The scope and complexity as well as the interdisciplinary involvement of Civil Engineering continues to increase rapidly with the development of modern science and spiraling population growth. Civil engineering seeks to optimize the physical infrastructure that makes a healthy and safe society possible, even in adverse environments. Conversely, it also expends considerable scientific effort to assess and minimize the impacts that society and its infrastructure have on the surrounding environment. The preparation of the Civil Engineering student in our degree program is aimed toward meeting these challenges through the innovative application of theoretical principles and creative design.
Our civil engineering graduates are found in responsible engineering and management positions in industry and government. Some become consultants in the planning, design, or construction of engineering projects. The professional practice of a Civil Engineer includes the conception, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of private and public projects. Included in this are bridges, buildings, highways, airports, railroads, harbors, water and wastewater treatment plants, environmental impact assessment, water distribution systems, and water power developments. Civil engineers also become involved in assessing the impact of constructed facilities and of human activities on our natural environment.

Mining Engineering Degree Program at Michigan Tech Mining Engineering was one of the first academic programs at Michigan Tech, beginning over a century ago. It is one of only 15 mining engineering programs in the U.S. that has been uninterrupted since the beginning of the century and has also held accreditation with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) since 1936. MTU's mining program is continually upgraded to keep pace with the ever-increasing complexity of modern mining by providing well-equipped labs for instruction in a variety of mining subjects. It emphasizes classroom instruction and practical experience through laboratory assignments and fieldwork. The Michigan Tech Mining Engineering degree program offers advantages associated with a friendly learning environment and closely knit educational support group. These conditions allow students to interact more freely with other students and faculty, resulting in a more in-depth understanding of their prospective careers and better than average job placement.
    The Industry
Each year, a single person requires an equivalent of 40,000 pounds of new minerals, and energy equal to that produced by 30,000 pounds of coal. With each different mineral comes a different mine site and a different location, giving the mining engineer a very diverse work environment, and limitless horizons to work anywhere in the world. So if you're looking for a top salary career with opportunities for advancement, then mining engineering could be the choice for you!

    Bachelor of Nuclear Engineering
    Nuclear Engineering
Nuclear engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the release, control, and utilization of all types of energy from nuclear sources. The uses of nuclear energy in today's technological world are varied. As public concern has grown about the role of fossil fuels in promoting global warming, nuclear power is increasingly recognized as a necessary alternative source for electric energy. In the space industry, nuclear energy provides power for satellites and interplanetary probes. Radiation technology, another important area, employs radioactive material to sterilize biologically hazardous wastes, to diagnose and treat disease, and to monitor the transport and metabolism of experimental pharmaceuticals. Nuclear fusion, an area of ongoing research, shows significant promise as an energy source for the future.
    Careers in Nuclear Engineering
Approximately 20 percent of the electricity generated in the United States in 1989 came from nuclear power plants, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. By 1991, more than 110 nuclear power plants are scheduled to be in service. The industrial use of radiation has also continued to grow, with the expanded use of radioisotope sources for food irradiation, nuclear oil well logging, and thickness gauge applications. The expansion of the nuclear power industry and the increased use of other nuclear-related technologies have created a steady demand for nuclear engineers at all professional levels. Areas of specialization include fields such as reactor operations, reactor safety, fuel management, fusion, radioisotope applications, environmental surveillance, waste disposal, and medical technology. The organizations employing nuclear engineers range from federal and state agencies to private consulting firms, from major utilities to small manufacturing companies. Each year many of these groups send representatives to Georgia Tech to interview prospective employees.

    KU is a Best Value
In addition, the 10th edition of the Gourman Report, which is used by professional counselors to help students identify the best schools, ranks the KU Undergraduate Program in Architectural Engineering as #3 in the country.
    History of KU ARCE
The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering (BS ARCE) degree program at the University of Kansas was begun in 1912. The first two BS ARCE degrees were awarded in 1916 to Edward Tanner (designer of KU's Danforth Chapel) and Willis Whitten (who soon after died in service in Europe). Julia Carmen, the first female graduate of the KU School of Engineering, completed her BS ARCE in 1920. About 25 to 40 BS ARCE students now graduate each year. The Bachelor of Architecture (B ARCH) degree program at KU was started by the Architectural Engineering faculty in 1920. The BS ARCE and B ARCH programs were in a combined department in the School of Engineering until the School of Architecture and Urban Design was organized in 1969. Through a management agreement, the undergraduate ARCE degree program is offered jointly by the two schools with the School of Architecture and Urban Design handling admissions and the School of Engineering overseeing graduation requirements. This arrangement offers undergraduates the benefits of both schools. The Master of Science in Architectural Engineering (MS ARCE) degree program began in 1955, and a Master of Construction Management (M CM) was added in 1999. These graduate ARCE degree programs are offered by KU's Graduate School and are managed by the School of Engineering's Graduate Division.
