Application deadline: Wednesday, May 1 All application materials must be submitted by this date.
Admission Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent. Minimum 250 TOEFL (CBT) score for nonnative English speakers (students with a TOEFL score of between 213 and 250 CBT may be permitted to enroll in a combination of certificate courses and advanced ESL courses). Use the school code: 2594. Previous teaching experience or an academic background in TESOL or a field related to TESOL is not required.
  • Columbia University Students Columbia University undergraduate students may only take courses in the program with the approval of their class dean or dean of students and the coordinators of the TESOL Certificate Program. Columbia University graduate students interested in practical training in teaching English, but not in the full certificate program of six courses, may register for one or more TESOL courses through the Summer Session. Such students must first secure premission to enroll in each course from a Department Representative for the TESOL Program. TESOL courses are not open to undergraduate students from Columbia or any other college or university.

    W elcome to the English as a Second Language (ESL) Home Page at Memorial University of Newfoundland, in Canada. Memorial University in St. John's is an excellent place to study English . St. John's, situated on the Atlantic Ocean, is the capital of the Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador. One of the oldest cities in North America, St. John's is rich in history and culture, and well-known for its friendliness and beautiful, safe environment. Memorial offers a 12-week Intensive English Program 3 times per year and a 5-week English Language Summer School each July. In addition, English for Special Purposes and custom-designed courses are offered for groups. Students in the 12-week Intensive English Program (English for Academic Purposes) may apply for provisional admission to Memorial's degree programs. Students who are provisionally admitted to Memorial may make their admissions final by successfully completing the Intensive English Program and passing the test of English language proficiency given at the end of the program. Class sizes are small (no more than 15), allowing for a great deal of interaction, and are taught by highly-qualified instructors. ESL students may use all of the university facilities, which include an excellent university library, student centre, computer facilities and a multimedia language lab.

    The English As A Second Language Program (ESL) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers two specialized programs for students whose first language is not English.
    Intensive English Program
    The Intensive English Program offers intensive, focused instruction for 20 hours every week. This program includes work in Listening Comprehension, Reading and Writing. An advanced level combines all of these for more in-depth academically oriented training. All the classes are non-credit.

    ESL Writing Courses For Credit
    If you are a UWM student who learned another language before learning English, you can complete your required writing courses by taking ESL writing courses for credit instead of the writing courses designed for native speakers of English. In the ESL writing courses, you will learn not only what native speakers of English learn in college writing courses, but also the English language skills that you need to succeed in all of your university courses.
