National Institute of Education, Singapore Paper to be presented at the International Educational Research Conference, University of Notre Dame, Fremantle, Western Australia, 2-6 December 2001. Creating a constructivist-learning environment using ICT to teach concepts and skills in classroom management: An exploration at NIE, Singapore. National Institute of Education, Singapore Abstract Development of ICT has provided new opportunities for delivering instruction in institutes of Higher Education. At NIE we have made an attempt to develop a learning environment that delivers course materials to students in a variety of formats. An indigenous CD-ROM was developed as a comprehensive resource to facilitate learning the concepts and skills associated with classroom management. The CD-ROM was set up in a web-based format so that it could interface with video-clips and websites that are relevant to classroom management issues. Communication with the students was maintained through Blackboard communication tools. The students also had opportunities to interaction on a face-to-face basis with their peers and the tutors during tutorials. This paper reports on this endeavor in using the new technologies in delivering a teacher education module on classroom management and the perception of students who participated in the experiment.

The Academy of Development Sciences has been working for several years in Karjat Tribal Block of Raigad district in Maharashtra. Karjat has a very rich resource base of biodiversity, as it is situated in the foothills of the Western Ghats. Part of the taluka, i.e. north to Kashele-Neral axis has a largely tribal population. Some key environment and development issues have been identified. These include:
Stress on local biodiversity due to increased pressure on the forest areas, the gaps in implementation of forest dept policies, lack of participation of local communities in forest management, and pressure of the urban areas.
  • Increasing soil and water pollution due to excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in the watershed area of Pej River, where two rice crops are taken. The loss of nutrients due to polishing of rice is well known, but this is now also observed in the tribal communities who were hitherto consuming rice dehusked manually.

What Can I Teach My Young Child About the Environment
Why Should My Child Learn About the Environment So Early? The rationale for environmental education during the early childhood years is based on two major premises. First, children must develop a sense of respect and caring for the natural environment during their first few years of life or be at risk for never developing such attitudes. Second, positive interactions with the natural environment are an important part of healthy child development, and these interactions enhance learning and the quality of life over the span of one's lifetime. How Can I Get Started? The following guidelines can be used as a framework for developing and implementing an environmental education program for preschool children.
  • Begin with simple experiences. Young children learn best through experiences that relate to what is already familiar and comfortable. Thus, the best place to start is in an environment similar to what they already know. For example, focus on a single tree in a backyard or playground before venturing into a heavily wooded area.
    Provide frequent positive experiences outdoors.

Controlling the CorelDRAW 8 Environment
In Hour 1 of this book, you jumped right into CorelDRAW 8. You didn't need a detailed investigation into the program environment to create a wide array of text and shapes and combine them to make a fairly complex illustration. As you continue to work with CorelDRAW, you'll find that the features that make CorelDRAW so powerful require you to customize and define the working environment. For example, if you create designs with dozens of objects, you might find working in Wireframe view faster and easier. If you create technical drawings, you'll want to use CorelDRAW's capability to attach dimensions to objects. If you design graphics for a web site, you might want to create a custom Drawing page the size of a typical monitor, defined in pixels, not inches. These are just a few examples of the wide-ranging changes you can make to CorelDRAW. You can customize the basic look and feel of CorelDRAW 8 to serve your own specific design tasks. In this hour, you learn how to work with the Standard toolbar, place Docker windows, and work with the status bar and rollups.
Viewing and Moving Toolbars
CorelDRAW 8 comes with ten premade toolbars, but 99% of the time you will want to use the Standard toolbar. It has all the tools you need to cut, copy, and paste objects, and to control the basics of your environment, such as zoom level.

Universities Join to Teach Eco-Industry
Cornell, University of Southern California allocate $175,000 to environmental project
By PETER LIN
Cornell University and the University of Southern California (USC) will use a $175,000 federal grant to teach businesses around the nation about the benefits of eco-industry, a new approach that helps industries become more environmentally friendly.
The money will go towards creating a new National Center for Eco-Industrial Development, a program that facilitates job growth and industrial expansion while helping the environment.
"Eco-industry is focused on connecting businesses together to work with the community to create jobs and make a healthier environment," said Edward Cohen-Rosenthal, director of Cornell's Work and Environment Initiative (WEI) and co-director of the National Center for Eco-Industrial Development. Eco-industry, pioneered through WEI and also through USC's Center for Economic Development, researches ways to make companies produce less waste. This often involves linking companies when one's by-product can function as a resource or production input for another. For example, Firestone gave its recently recalled tires to help pave new highways. Many of these businesses that are beneficiaries of eco-industrial development are located in economically distressed communities, Cohen-Rosenthal said.

R/3 is an integrated suite of applications designed to handle the data processing for large corporations. It was developed in Germany by the company named SAP (an acronym for Systems Applications and Products for data processing). TIP When you see the word SAP by itself, it is pronounced " ess-ay-pea ." When it is combined with another word, it is pronounced sap, as in "tree sap." You should never say "sap" when referring to the company SAP. Always pronounce it as " ess-ay-pea ." Saying "sap" is the surest way to say, "I don't know anything about SAP."

New centre opens to teach kids about the environment
Youngsters look at a recycling tree at the Environment Centre By James Young THE green ribbon was cut last weekend on a state-of-the-art Environment Centre in High Wycombe that is hoped will educate children and help ensure the future of the planet. The Environment Centre on Holywell Mead, has been built from the redundant old cafe next to the open-air swimming pool on The Rye and has been funded by refuse giant Biffa and Wycombe District Council. It is hoped that the centre will provide an interactive education tool for children and adults around south Bucks to make them more aware of the importance of working with and preserving the environment. Biffa agreed to donate landfill tax credits to the Royal Society for Nature Conservation in 1997, and the Environment Centre is the latest scheme to benefit. In the centre there is a teaching room, exhibit hall and organic garden space and the buildings environmentally sound features include the use of solar energy, waste minimisation and heating from woodchips.

56. Introducing Video Production Into A Teaching And Learning Environment

http://www.peoplesmedia.org/peachy.htm
FOR TEACHERS Video production can be used in many ways. It can be an excellent way to express your ideas, share personal stories, or document important events. In the classroom, video production can be an effective medium for teaching and learning because it taps into a creativity and personal voice that otherwise, might be left out of the classroom. Whether using video to integrate other subjects from the the curriculum, or just having students use video to express themselves in their own language and/or environment, video production is a valuable starting point to teach students that what they see through the eye piece and their perceptions are important The process of looking through the lens and structuring their world becomes a very powerful teaching tool that tells students they can choose what to make important, they can choose what to learn. Video production can give students the power to communicate their ideas and empower them to bring you the viewer into their world. Once students relate video to their own experiences with television or movies, and you begin to introduce them to the fundamentals of video production, they can then transfer the learning and begin to tackle different topics and techniques using video. One strategy for integrating media into a novice classroom is to have the preliminary production activites focus on the students. This stimulates interest and also creates an impact. For example, you can use an interview exercise and have students take turns operating and being in front of the camera. A group interview activity will foster cooperative learning and teach the students basic interviewing techniques, visual composition, aesthetics of sound, and focus all at the same time.

Indian land claims teach valuable lessons
Publisher's note often addresses the important role played by secure rights to private property in protecting the environment. (See this issue's centerspread, for example.) A major dispute occurring in the property rights arena, and one that gets little attention from the mainstream media or property rights advocacy groups, concerns claims to “rent and damages” made by Native Americans. While deciding the legitimacy of their claims is a difficult, perhaps unresolvable, question of law, what is undeniable is that Native Americans have suffered rough treatment by politicians and the federal government ... not just a century ago but even today. In many ways, the abuse of power parallels what all landowners fear and many now face. The Onyota’a:ka (better known as the Oneida tribe) oppose a proposed settlement to a land claim case, originally filed 21 years ago, involving a taking of land in upstate New York from the Oneidas, allegedly in violation of treaty rights. The description of the battle below comes from two pro-Oneida sources and originally appeared in the April 2002 issue of Shenandoah Newsletter (736 West Oklahoma Street, Appleton, WI 54914, subscription: $17.50/year) and is presented without editing or editorial comment.
