NA Friends:
In the interest of brevity, I confined an earlier posting about NA
languages to 'just the facts' relating to hiring situtations that your
students might face. Unfortunately that made it come off rather hard on
Fortran. Here are some more extended comments that may be more useful
in focusing on the real problem of what to teach.
I programmed exlusively in Fortran from 1978 to the mid-80's (heat
transfer and fluid flow for jet engines, then mechanical CAD geometry).
Then I spent two years in a CS department learning all those odd
languages and getting absolutely nowhere towards thesis.. By luck, I ran into some solvable problems in boundary integrals, and spent 2 years

The Practice What You Teach Project Collaborative Environment The Practice What You Teach Project: "Developing and delivering quality instruction in a traditional manner is in large part an art that unfortunately is practiced by only a limited number of instructors. Thus, uneven quality results. Even among exceedingly talented instructors, there is the problem that their talent is not passed on to others who could in turn become 'artists' in the design and delivery of instruction" (Hannum and Briggs, 1982). Practice What You Teach is a teachers' colony modeled after an artists' colony. The most important elements that I will bring from the artist colony model are the safe environment, the focused atmosphere, and the risk rewarding society. The project focuses on the metaphor that a teacher is an artist rather than a scientist. A scientist can follow another's experiment to the letter and achieve the same results. A teacher can no more follow another's instructions achieving the same results than an artist could. In the case of the artist and the teacher, the individual, his or her relationship to all elements of the environment, and his or her personal style constantly combine forming new masterpieces. The colony will serve between 12 and 15 high school teachers specializing in various content areas. Colony teachers will take a six-week sabbatical from their schools and will work in a collaborative learning environment during this time.

How To Create a Dynamic Learning Environment in Your Home

After nearly two years of reading, browsing through catalogs, cruising the web, and talking to many homeschoolers in search of the "right" curriculum, I have come to the conclusion that educating myself about teaching, the learning process, etc. is a higher priority than purchasing a curriculum package.
Why? Because only when you know how and what to teach and get a wide variety of input about what has worked best for others can you know which curriculum package, if any, you should decide upon. My degree in education has only given me a good foundation in this process. It has not eliminated the need for the process.
Learning at home is much different, but in my opinion, more effective, than learning in a traditional school setting. And so it takes time learning from others how to do it well, just as any other job requires training and continuously learning how to improve.

Students are accountable to the standards of appropriate content areas. Students are also accountable for the quality of their reasoning.

CAD is often referred to as an electronic pencil. But is it? The pencil is such a ubiquitous tool, you need no training on how to use it. You can use it to write, sketch, or draw anything on paper. If you make a mistake, an eraser can rub out the improperly placed linework so you can place it again with greater care. The skill of the person using the pencil determines the quality of the generated linework. If your handwriting is good, your letters will be attractive and legible. And the freehand straight line you draw will be straighter than the one drawn by a child. CAD software does not attempt to be a pencil. Though you can write and sketch on a computer screen with the software, it is specifically geared toward the creation of architectural and engineering drawings. CAD software creates technical drawings using geometric shapes such as lines, arcs, circles, and curves a draftsperson uses. These geometric shapes are represented in the electronic CAD file in mathematical terms. The line you draw in MicroStation will be exactly as straight as that a child draws. This is because you do not draw the line as you do with a pencil. You simply identify the two points the line needs to connect and the software takes care of drawing the line between those two points. Note :MicroStation stores all geometric shapes in terms of the cardinal points necessary to define it in mathematical terms. For a line, the coordinates of its two end points are stored. For an ellipse, the length of its two axes, the rotation angle of its primary axis, and the coordinates of its center are stored. MicroStation re-creates these shapes in real time on the screen as you navigate the drawing.

1994 (Updated July 2002) ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education DIGEST The world of a child is the tangible, real world of the here and now. It is difficult for children to extend ideas from the small, familiar world in which they operate to the larger, abstract world beyond. Even adults envision distant parts of the world based on their own experiences and prior learning. Nevertheless, the global concepts of environmental education, the basic principles of ecology, and the importance of environmental responsiblity can be instilled in a child without reference to faraway places. These ideas can all be made concrete right where the child lives and goes to school.
Basic Principles of Ecology
One of the fundamental tenets of ecology is that all activities have by-products. In environmental education, it is understood that this tenet applies to all activities of nature, both natural and human-induced. Some of these by-products are called "pollution." Though pollution tends to have a negative connotation, not all pollution necessarily affects the environment adversely (Botkin and Keller, 1982). Ivan Illich, an environmental philosopher, suggests that most of the problems of humans and the environment are a consequence of a society originally designed to protect people from the environment, improve their material circumstances, and enhance their freedom (Gardels and Snell, 1990). Yet, to be good for humans, the environment must be compatible with the unchangeable needs of human nature. Because people are relatively unable to adjust biologically to nature, we must change our immediate environment instead (Dubos, 1971).

Heather Garrison wants people to know about sustainable living but doesn't see her job as executive director of the Sustainability Institute as some sort of quest. "I'm not a preacher," she says. "I'm not trying to convert anybody to anything. If you show people the benefits in this holistic sense - in terms of the earth, the people and their pocketbooks - then people will make their own choices." Sustainability is generally a way of balancing the environment, human well-being and economics in choices for living and building. The institute is a not-for-profit organization founded by the principals of the Noisette Co., which is working with North Charleston on a $1 billion, environmentally sensitive redevelopment of the city's urban core.

How can you keep your pet healthy?
  • Adopt your pet from an animal shelter or purchase it from a reputable pet store or breeder. Have your new companion checked out right away by a veterinarian. Keep your pet under a veterinarian's care for regularly scheduled shots and treatment for worms. This reduces the chance that your pet could get sick and pass an infection to you or your family. Since the cost of veterinary care may not be within everyone's reach, the local animal shelter or humane society may have information about low-cost clinics. Give your pet a balanced diet and do not allow it to eat raw food or drink out of the toilet. Clean your pet's living area at least once a week. Bury the feces, or place them in a plastic bag and then put it in the trash.

POPBUGS - A Simulation Environment for Track-driven Robots

The POPBUGS package (implemented in Poplog ) lets you experiment with simple, simulated robots in a 2-dimensional world. The robots have `tank-tracks' instead of legs and are thus controlled simply by specifying speeds for the right and left tracks. The robot's sensory abilities are fully programmable but typically provide some variety of proximity sensing. All object parameters, including colour, shape, pentrability and mass, can be manipulated independently. The simulation provided by the package is relatively realistic. Robots have inertia and proper tank-track dynamics. This means, for example, that locking one of the tracks causes the robot to pivot about the central point of that track rather than about the robot's centre. Sensors and motors can be arbitrarily noisy. At present, however, there is no way of introducing track-slippage; i.e., the tracks are assumed to have perfect grip. The simplest way to familiarize yourself with the package is to watch some of the canned simulations. These show simulated robots, or `bugs' as they are called, interacting with a variety of worlds.
