By William A. McGarey, M.D.
A dramatic story evolved recently at the A.R.E. Clinic when a 37-year-old manafflicted with epilepsysaw his life changing for the better in only four weeks. It not only involved a degree of physical healing, but he came out of a 20-year drug-induced fog and regained much of the clarity of thinking and awareness that characterized him as a teenager.
When Tommy (not his real name) arrived, he was under the influence of some 26 medications daily, some listed as having dangerous side effects. His brain function was so low, it would take him 10 to 15 seconds to answer a simple question, and his mother said he acted more like a "zombie" than the brilliant young man he had been.
He was not only taking 300 mg. of Dilantin each day, and 2 mg. of perphenazine three times daily, but he had been placed on 14 Depakote tablets a day, each 250 mg. Perphenazine is used to treat anxiety and depression, the others to control seizures. His doctors apparently were most interested in controlling seizures, but even at that level of medication, the young man still had seizures periodically.
In the Physician's Desk Reference , there is a warning (emphasized by being boxed in) dealing with Depakote that says in part: "Hepatic [liver] failure resulting in fatalities has occurred in patients receiving valproic acid and its derivatives . . . experience has indicated that the incidence of fatal hepatotoxicity decreases considerably in progressively older patient groups. These incidents usually have occurred during the first six months of treatment." In fact, Tommy already had abnormal liver function tests even though he had been on Depakote only a short time.

31. Epilepsy & Sleep Disorders
Article from the neurowebforum
http://dem0nmac.mgh.harvard.edu/neurowebforum/EpilepsyArticles/epilepsysleepdiso
This article submitted by Mdavis@hpb.hwc.ca on 10/13/95.
Does anyone know if there is a correlation between epilepsy
and sleep disorders (such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea).
My 12 year old daughter has been recently diagnosed with
"primary absence seizures". She also has a rare form of
"sleep apnea" which is treated with bi-level nasal mask
ventilation.
We have correlated her epilepsy attacks to every 90 minutes
which suggests a REM sleep disorder.

32. Epilepsy-Down Syndrome Foundation
Research into the dual diagnoses of Down syndrome and epilepsy. Emphasizes nutritional and nonmedical interventions.
http://members.aol.com/dsepilepsy/org.htm
Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation
A better vision The Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation (DSEF) is a part of the non-profit Center for Natural Health Research and is devoted to looking into the best, natural, methods to help those who have both Down syndrome (trisomy 21) and various forms of epilepsy (including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome). These methods include clinical nutrition, naturopathy, manipulative techniques, exercise, and other natural methods intended to improve the quality of life for those with Down syndrome who also suffer with seizures. The Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation is directed up by Robert J. Thiel, Ph.D., N.M.D. . Dr. Thiel is not a medical doctor. He is a doctor of nutrition (Ph.D. nutrition science) and a doctor of naturopathic medicine (N.M.D.). Dr. Thiel believes that DSEF has a better vision for those with both disorders. Why? Because he believes that natural is better. Because he believes that many health professionals and therapists have expectations for the disabled that are too low. Because he believes combining nutrition, exercise, and parental motivation results in better outcomes. Because he believes that science and common-sense show that the combination of natural interventions is the most logical to pursue. Because he has met with many of the so-called experts and researchers in this field and found many of their approaches lacking. He does not believe that he, nor DSEF, have all the answers, but does believe that in many respects, DSEF is at the forefront for practical research to benefit those with both Down syndrome and epilepsy.
