SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA-September 20, 2000-David O’Connor of The Plains, VA scored 29.0 penalties in the opening dressage phase of the individual eventing competition, taking the lead with the best score in Olympic history. O’Connor impressed the judges and amazed the crowd with his ride on his veteran partner, Custom Made, a 15-year-old, Irish Thoroughbred gelding owned by Xandarius, LLC. His ride was accurate and precise with good cadence throughout and research indicated that his score was the best ever achieved in an Olympic eventing dressage test. "He was just beautiful to ride today," said O’Connor who just the day before made Olympic history by sharing an Olympic medal (eventing team Bronze) with his wife for the second time. "When he floats like that, he’s so enjoyable to ride." "This has been coming for about six months; he’s been getting stronger and everyone has done a great job. Today he felt good in his mind and he was good in his body. He’s really quite special when he comes together like that." Standing second with a score of 34.80 is Marina Koehncke of Germany on Longchamps. Heidi Antikatzidis of Greece is third with a score of 37.40 on Michaelmas.

Swedish Warmblood Olympic History
The Olympic Games provide very striking proof of the success of Swedish horses on the international scene. Equestrian events at the Olympics were founded in 1912 by the Swedish horseman Clarence Von Rosen. Swedish horses have experienced extraordinary success ever since, especially in Dressage and the Three-Day Event. With the exception of the Moscow Olympics, Swedish horses have been in the medals at every game! The Seoul Games in 1988 saw special success when 13 Swedish Warmbloods competed in Dressage with 6 winning medals. The Rome Olympiad in 1960 was another banner year, with 6 sons of the Swedish stallion Drabant participating. Here follows a list of all the Equestrian Medal winners in the Olympics with Swedish participants highlighted:

New Zealand failed to be represented at the first three Olympiads in Athens 1896, Paris 1900 and St Louis 1904 due to costs and travel distances. For the 1908 Games in London and the 1912 Games in Stockholm, New Zealand athletes teamed up with Australian competitors to compete under the banner 'Australasia'. The first Olympic medal ever won by a New Zealander was as an 'Australasian' representative. Harry Kerr won a bronze medal for the 3500 metres walk in 1908. New Zealand's first Olympic gold medallist was swimmer Malcolm Champion. Champion was a member of the Australasian 4x200 metre relay team which won the gold at Stockholm in 1912, breaking the world record. Another New Zealander at Stockholm, Anthony Wilding from Canterbury, won bronze in the men's tennis singles.

I'm not going to walk. I have a horse that needs to be ridden and I'm going to ride it, plain and simple." Gill has been warned previously about riding in city limits, but he says as the town is built on the farming and ranching industries, he should be allowed to. After a remarkable year, David O'Connor, 41, of The Plains, VA, has been named as USA Equestrian's 2002 Equestrian of the Year. O'Connor is the first two-time winner of this award in the history of the sport. A stellar horseman, O'Connor was chosen from a group of eight of the country's most outstanding athletes that were already bestowed the title of Equestrians of Honor. The eventer first won the award in 2000 largely for his individual gold medal winning performance at the Sydney Olympics, where he rode Custom Made, an Irish Thoroughbred gelding owned by Joe Zada. While at the games, O'Connor turned in the best eventing dressage score in Olympic history when he opened the individual competition with a score of 29.00 penalties. He was the first U.S. athlete to take the gold medal in the sport since 1984. This past year has also brought significant achievements. His Olympic gold medal horse, Custom Made, carried him to victory once again at Fair Hill International. Before the competition, O'Connor announced the event would be the last for the 17 year-old prize-winning gelding. At Radnor Hunt International, he also won the USA National Two-Star Eventing Championship.

The Events
"Show jumping" is the most well-known equestrian event. Each horse and rider jumps two rounds of a series of obstacles. Fault points are assessed if an obstacle is knocked down, if the horse balks at an obstacle, or if the time is exceeded. The "dressage" competition requires the rider, man or woman, to guide the horse through a series of precise and intricate movements. Some of these movements include a stunning element called "the passage," which calls for a suspension of motion between each step of a trot, and another, "the piaffe," in which the animal trots in place. Points are awarded for the proper execution of each movement. The three-day event, also called "combined training," is a grueling test of endurance and style consisting of three parts: dressage, endurance, and show jumping. The dressage and jumping sections follow the same basic rules and scoring as do the regular dressage and jumping events. The endurance phase is a long-distance obstacle run broken into four parts: two "roads and tracks," one "steeplechase," and one "cross-country.".

CONYERS, Ga., July 24-The O'Connors of Virginia, Karen and David, flawlessly cleared 12 sets of hurdles today for a bit of Olympic history as they apparently became the first husband-wife team ever to win medals in the same competition, winning silver along with two colleagues in equestrian's team three-day event. With the Centennial Olympics' $80 million information retrieval system balking at simple requests for even yesterday's results, no one dared ask it to tackle the historic husband-wife issue, "but we know they're the first in equestrian," said U.S. team spokesman Marty Baumon. Officials strongly believe they're also the first medal-sharing spouses ever in the Games. Their achievement should bring cheers around horsey Middleburg and The Plains, where the O'Connors train and board horses on a 400-acre farm they run for wealthy owners. And it pleased the Olympic coach, Capt. Mark Phillips, ex-husband of Britain's Princess Anne, who was hired three years ago to end a 12-year medal drought for Americans in three-day team event. "They'll go pretty wild when we walk down the streets" of Middleburg, said a beaming David O'Connor, 34, still wearing his medal after the couple shared a victory gallop around the Olympic equestrian ring with teammates Bruce Davidson and Jill Henneberg.
