It's easy to see why horse lovers, golfers, mountain bike enthusiasts and festival attendees have such great things to say about their experiences at the Georgia International Horse Park. The Horse Park History During the late 1980's, the City of Conyers, Georgia, which owned and operated the water and wastewater system for both Conyers and Rockdale County, began researching alternative methods of wastewater disposal. Like many communities, Conyers was facing increasingly stringent federal and state guidelines regarding wastewater discharges into rivers. One solution is a process called land application, which involves spraying treated wastewater on such green areas as grass and trees. The wastewater is not treated to the levels required for discharge into streams, but it still is sanitary for use on athletic fields and golf courses. City officials found that in order to expand the City's wastewater treatment capabilities, it would be better to use the land application process; and in 1990, the City identified a 1,139 acre tract of land located in a less-developed portion of Rockdale County as a site suitable for land application. Working with its engineers, the City decided that the site would meet the land application needs. Community Needs The 1996 Centennial Olympics September 18, 1990, was a momentous day in the history of Atlanta. It was the day the City of Atlanta was awarded the bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympiad. But this news had a significant effect on the City of Conyers' hopes of developing an equestrian complex. The plan for the 1996 Summer Games included developing facilities to host the equestrian events at a site only 30 minutes from Conyers. City officials knew that if the events were held at a site located close to Conyers, it would make Conyers' plan impractical. So, City officials decided the only way to make the City's plan for the equestrian complex a reality was by hosting the 1996 Olympic Equestrian Events. This plan began to come alive when local leaders learned that the site originally slated to host the equestrian events would not be hosting them after all. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) would be looking for another site.

The modern Olympics were developed by Pierre de Coubertin to promote physical and moral development through athletic competition. Competitors are trained not to give up when the chips may be down. The philosophy is if you give up, you will not reach your goal. It is also important to teach students that you can achieve your goal drug-free. When the athletes recited the Olympic oath at the Opening Ceremony, part of the oath states that they will compete drug-free. Drugs of any kind are banned at the Olympics. Several athletes were sent home because they tested positive for drugs. Those athletes are banned from participating in any Olympic events forever All athletes must submit to drug testing throughout the Games. Immediately after each competition, athletes are tested for drugs. The drug testers follow the athletes to the medal ceremonies and to their news conferences. The athletes' awards are not considered final until they pass their drug tests. So far in this year's Games, a weight lifter and a hammer thrower have lost their silver medals because they flunked their drug tests. Others withdrew from the Games for fear that they would test positive for drugs and be banned for life from the Olympics.

Olympic Factsheets Women and the Olympics Women were traditionally prohibited from participating in the Ancient Olympic Games. They could not even enter the playing areas or the stadium as spectators. However, women held their own games at Olympia. Dedicated to the goddess Hera, the sister-wife of Zeus, these games grew out of traditional Greek fertility rites. According to some estimates these games even predated the exclusively male Olympic Games. At the turn of the century when the Modern Games came into being, much debate took place on the principles of women's participation. The founder of the Games Pierre de Coubertin, declared himself against women's participation expressing the opinion that if they could not play in every sport on equal terms with men they should not be allowed to take part at all. This view was opposed by several International Olympic Committee (IOC) members who supported the stand that women had the right to participate in the Games, competing in sports to suit their capabilities. The first breakthrough in women's participation took place at the second Olympics, the 1900 Paris Games. It was here that Charlotte Cooper became the first Olympic champion by winning the Gold Medal in the tennis championship. The only other sport allowed at these games for women was golf. Although swimming was added to the program in 1912, this symbolic gesture to women's sport continued until 1924 when the IOC decided to open its doors for a larger participation of women in the Games. The road between the proposal and the initiation was not an easy one as even in the Berlin Games in 1936 there were only four sports available to women, they were - swimming, fencing, athletics and gymnastics.

History of the Event There is at present only one CDI*** held in Australia each year. Originating from "FEI Days" and CDAs (an event at a lower level, now a CDI*) at Lochinvar in the wine-producing Hunter Valley region north of Sydney, it was first held there in 1992, but outgrew its venue and was moved to Sydney in 1994. Today, in front of 20,000 delirious fans at Horsley Park's International Equestrian Centre, the trim 41-year-old shucked off his usual demeanour and went hoywire. Before the final instalment of the team three-day event even got underway he was playing to the crowd by delivering exaggerated bows to the half-full stands. By the end, basking in his piece of history, he was leading the crowd in renditions of ''Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi Oi!'' and trying to plant a kiss on Australian coach Wayne Roycroft during the medal ceremony. Goodness knows what his landlady, Princess Anne, made of it all. Not that the five-time Olympian was at much risk of offending anyone. Equestrian may have a reputation as a refined sport, but there was plenty of red earth running through the veins of those in attendance yesterday. The result was the most vociferous crowd - and certainly the biggest Australian gathering - before which Hoy had ever competed. There was no way he was going to be painted as a party-pooper, particularly on a day when he secured his place in history as a member of the first national team to win three consecutive Olympic golds.

O'Connor won the first Olympic Gold Medal for the USET since 1984 when he clinched the individual eventing championship on Custom Made, a 15-year-old, Irish Thoroughbred gelding owned by Xandarius, LLC. He finished the three-phase competition with a score of 34.00 penalties, the best score in Olympic history. For O'Connor, the Gold Medal topped a historic week at the Olympic Games. How It Works Walking the Course Scoring The first time a refusal occurs, the penalty is three faults; six faults are given for the second, and the third constitutes elimination. A penalty of four faults is incurred each time a fence is knocked down and the penalty for the horse touching the water at a water jump is also four faults. Penalties can also be incurred for exceeding the time allowed to complete the course. The winner is the horse and rider combination with the fewest jumping and time penalties. Frequently, several horses complete the course without penalty and advance to a jump-off over a shortened course. In the jump-off, the same scoring rules apply, except that in the case of equal faults, the horse with the fastest time will be declared the winner.
