Inspired by the chariot races of the ancient Greek games, it's also the only Olympic sport where humans and animals are teammates. Did You Know? Just like people, horses need a valid passport to travel internationally. The last time the Summer Games were held in Australia ( Melbourne 1956 ), strict quarantine laws forced organizers to schedule the equestrian events in Stockholm. In 2000, however, the horses will be allowed to make the trip to Sydney. In the dressage event (derived from the French verb "to train") a horse-and-rider team receives scores based on set movements and a freestyle dance routine done by the horse. The event traces its routes to classical Greek horsemanship, and to the knights of the Middle Ages who considered the maneuvers a valuable training method. In fact, only commissioned officers of the military could compete in Olympic dressage competitions from its inclusion in

LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. Second-round winners in some heated competition to make a U.S. Olympic equestrian team took a victory lap Sunday, but not on their horses. With the warm weather, they opted for golf carts. The horses avoided the heat in the barn as the dressage riders, their top hats and tails flapping, spun gravel in 180-degree turns and steered toward each other bumper-car style. "That was fun," said Sue Blinks, who maintained first place with a trial-high score of 73.16 percent on her Hanoverian gelding Flim Flam. "We all get up each morning and, with the tension, wonder why we do this. When it goes well, we know why. We're all sort of coasting on that."

Down's, Lisa Priestley, aged 15, (Iveagh) duly obliged with a blistering clear round in a time of 30.19 over Stephen Martin's 8 fence jump off course.
A record 82 finalists congregated at Warwickshire College on Saturday (29th March) from an original line-up of 4,500 starters at 120 Centres for the seventh finals of this hugely popular series.
The table A7 course for the main event after lunch produced 32 clear rounds after a stuttering start with only one clear in the first seven rounds. But then came the clears thick and fast.
The first two to go Chloe Hill (Derwent Hunt) and Georgina Morris (Oakley Hunt West), went round in blistering times and with the majority still to go, the crowd thought it was all over.
Six rounds later though, enter Lisa Priestley who went round like a rocket on Dolly (30.19) and found the fastest line over the first three fences where even an experienced international might have struggled to find the right line.

For all of the major sports covered by NBC each of these Olympics, IDS provided state-of-the-art broadcast interface systems. These systems simultaneously process scoring and timing information from the official results system and from the official timing system. This data was made available instantly on the NBC graphics systems for broadcast and was also databased for later access. Due to the time difference between Sydney Australia and the United States at the Summer Olympics, NBC produced a large amount of broadcast material on tape. This required an interface system that let NBC go back to a completed event and access information at any point in time during the event. The IDS broadcast interface used the official results to create an event database. This gave NBC the flexibility to edit previously recorded events and insert graphics as if they were receiving live data.

In the closing stages of the teams three-day event, with Australia in the lead, Gillian Rolton crashed to earth from her mount Peppermint Grove during the cross country event. Despite the pain from a broken collarbone and two broken ribs, Rolton remounted Peppermint Grove, anxious not to let her team-mates down. A short time later, she fell again. Showing enormous courage, again she remounted and finished the course.
