FACILITIES Library Facilities The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte is the largest academic library in the Charlotte Metrolina region. Its computerized, on-line catalog can be accessed through 30 in-house public access terminals and the world wide web. The library is currently undergoing a 20.5 million dollar expansion that was approved by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina during the summer 1995. The expansion will double the collection capacity to 1.3 million volumes and carry 1200 network connections. The new addition to the library is projected to be completed by summer 1999. The library currently receives over 5,000 separate periodical and serial publications of which 394 are specific to Biology and Biomedicine. The holdings of the library consist of over 513,000 volumes of books and bound periodicals; 1,538,000 microfilms, 646,000 government documents; and 1, 461,000 manuscripts. Included in this collection are over 17,136 periodical volumes and 36,075 monographs related to the biomedical/biotechnological fields. The Materials Fund of the Atkins Library is available for the purchase of books and periodicals, as well as supporting the cost of on-line searches, interlibrary loans, and other library-related services. The reference unit provides on-line and CD-ROM capabilities to search several databases. Access to documents not in its collection is provided through the interlibrary loan service and the ARIEL electronic transmission service via the world wide web.

Research Facilities
The Institute has recently refurbished much of its research space to produce a number of 'State-of-the-Art' molecular biology / biotechnology laboratory facilities. Each laboratory is fully equipped to carry out standard protein and nucleic acid molecular biology. Central support for research is provided by specialised service units which include: microbiological containment laboratory for handling human pathogens; two air-conditioned, negative-pressure, pathogen-containment laboratories; sterile tissue culture suite for generation and growth of transgenic plants; contained transgenic plant growth unit with eight individual growth rooms and a range of growth cabinets; animal cell culture unit.
Amongst the more recent acquisitions are a dispersive Raman microscope and on-line process analyser for non-invasive chemical imaging, a Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer and infrared microscope, a multi-angle laser light photometer, a microprojectile 'Biolistics' gun for direct gene transfer, a microtitre fluorimeter and luminometer, and a confocal laser scanning microscope. Studies in functional genomics are a high priority, and we have invested heavily in instrumentation for the study of the proteome, the transcriptome and the metabolome. Our mass spectrometer suite contains the absolute state of the art in instrumentation, viz. a Micromass LCT LC-nano-electrospray instrument, a Micromass TofSpec2E MALDI mass spectrometer and a Micromass Q-tof tandem electrospray instrument. Facilities are available for the growth of micro-organisms in batch fermentors or continuous culture.

494 N-terminal Protein Sequencer The Molecular Analysis Facility -Located in the Biochemistry building, this facility contains an automated protein sequencer, a peptide synthesizer, and an oligonucleotied synthesizer. ( An additional oligonucleotide synthesizer is available in the DOE Plant Research Lab.)

The main outcome was an initiative to establish a limited number of multidisciplinary structural biology centres that would carry out cutting-edge research and at the same time provide mechanisms for the general biological community to gain access to structural biology equipment and expertise. NESB i C (the N orth of E ngland S tructural Bi ology C entre) is one of 6 structural biology centres that were established under this initiative. NESB i C is now up and running and we now invite collaboration from researchers in the UK biological community.     Purpose Statement:
    This facility serves two primary roles in the Biology Department:
    • First, many areas of biology are increasingly dependent on the use of the tools and techniques of molecular biology. The MBF is a source of these tools and techniques to Faculty, Staff, and Students in the Department who may not have laboratories of their own suitably equipped. Second, the MBF maintains common use equipment which individual investigators require but do not have in their own laboratories (e.g. ultracentrifuges and automated DNA sequencer
    Inherent in the mission of the MBF is training. Undergraduate and Graduate students working on projects with faculty mentors are welcome and encouraged to use the facility. In addition the MBF is available for laboratory courses which utilize the equipment in the facility and expertise of the staff.
    Common use equipment in the Molecular Biology Facility available to all members of the Department:
    • Perkin-Elmer ABI 377 Automated DNA Sequencer
    • Ultra- and High Speed Centrifuges
    • Gel Documentation Sytem
    • Thermocyclers
    • Incubators
